Who cares if someone is gay anymore? Twenty years from now this wont even be news. I could care less if a guy likes another guy, just don't come hitting on me and we will be fine :)

I think it would be funny for some well known personality to come out and say he is straight. It would be as newsworthy as Cooper coming out now. If he had done it a few years ago, it would have been news and encouraging for the gay community. Doing it now really does lead you to believe he needed a boost to his ratings.

Homosexual kids are 4 times more likely to committ suicide. 25 percent of lesbian, gay and bisexual students and university employees have been harassed due to their sexual orientation. Homosexual kids are 3 times more likely not to feel safe at school.

If this saves one young persons life I think it is fine that it is reported. Comments like these belittle that effort, IMO.

With that I am bowing out of this thread.

Thirty years from now somebody will accidentaly bump into this thread and react in horror as to what some people were thinking in 2012.

They care because of their ignorant and bias reasons for not liking a person based on that. But that's just not liking the fact that they're gay.

I doubt there are too many people out there, if any, who actually care enough to need an announcement of whether a person is or isn't.

That was my point but I'm thinking I probably didn't make it very well in the way I worded it.

If he doesn't make an announcement, he sets himself up for rampant tabloid gossip when people start seeing him showing signs of affection towards his partner. In the end he would have had to state his orientation after question after question flew his way.

I don't think people coming out of the closet do it because they feel the world needs some sort of formal notification. I think celebrities do it because it's an establishment of their identity that they have hid from public view for so long.

I love how all of a sudden people coming out is just some sort of trick and pony show. Like it wasn't just a short few years ago when California made all that noise. Or like the vast majority of the US doesn't recognize same sex marriages or unions.

Gay rights are just a much a problem now as they were a few years back, they just aren't the hot topic at this moment so I guess people seem to think that the issue doesn't exist anymore.

The point of my post is that coming out now is not as newsworthy as it used to be. Coming out years ago was brave and encouraging for the gay community. Now it is just an "Oh yeah? Okay" sort of thing. This is nothing more than a ratings grab by someone who has likely been ready to come out for a while but was saving it as an ace to play when ratings dropped below a certain level.

People like Ellen DeGeneres and other well known people who came out years ago are the real heroes for the gay community because they came out when it was not widely acceptable to most people. I guess from the standpoint that someone well known coming out now keeps the topic in the news is probably a good thing for the gay community, but that still does not change the fact that Cooper did this more for his own personal gain rather than that of the gay community. I mean I doubt very seriously young people in school have any idea who Anderson Cooper is.

Well said, these people don't understand that.

They think in terms of themselves and their own scope.

I'm white therefore minorities should act equal if they want to be equal.
I'm straight therefore gays should keep quiet if they don't want people to be against them.

It doesn't work like that.

That happens even with straight celebrities :D

Or they are coming out with a book soon! :D

You are right about that for the most part. However, this seems more opportunistic to me. Other well known people who have come out have risked their careers by doing so and that is not the case with Cooper. He will most likely benefit from the announcement.

You don't realize that bullying and discrimination still occur. It's still a huge deal for individuals, and it's a big deal for someone like Anderson Cooper to do it, because he is in a field and position where that is rare.

Cooper has millions of viewers... it's a bigger deal than you think. And the fact that it can shape the community around us is what makes it a big deal.

The more people come out, the more people realize, hey my friend who I really care about is gay, I can't believe I'm against someone because of their sexual preference, I'm an idiot.

I just find it funny you say you don't care, as long as they don't hit on you. That's like saying I don't care about anyones race... as long as they don't date my daughter!

Actually you have no idea what I realize and do not realize nor do you have any clue as to my views on this topic. You are making assumptions about an entire viewpoint of someone based on one opinion about one person. I like Anderson Cooper, but I see this as being a ratings grab because there was absolutely no risk for him coming out.

Whatever amount of homophobic viewers, followers, etc. he loses from this announcement will be more than compensated by those he gains from the gay community. I neither look down on him for coming out nor look up to him for doing so, but I still believe his motives were mostly self-beneficial which is why I do not see this one person/event as a something special.

I have zero tolerance for anyone attacking anyone based on race, sexual orientation or religion which is why I have always stepped in when I see that happening in threads.

.. feel free to continue trying to spin this into something it is not though ..

Was a joke but your scenario is racism, mine is just discrimination I guess? Both are wrong though, I would just feel uncomfortable if a guy was buying me a drink thinking he might get lucky, heh

Other than gay marriage, what rights do the gay community want? I don't believe that marriage should be anything other than a man and women, but I am not against civil unions. I simply think marriage by definition is between man and women. If the gays want special rights due to the fact that they are gay, I am totally against it. As for the hero worship that gays get, I think it is BS. I am glad that I live in a part of the country that these things are not a big issue.

If this friend comes out and you find out he is gay because of it...either you have limited perception within your relationships with your friends, or you really weren't that close of friends to begin with.
