Given his age and the condition of his body, Tony could absolutely be done by season's end, if not before. As far as him changing the way he plays, i.e. getting the ball out or hitting the deck any quicker than he has been for sake of preservation, I don't see him making that adjustment at this stage.
And he shouldn't, IMO. For better of worse, you take that with Tony because part of his allure is how he can extend plays. Unfortunately, that means taking shots. Anyway, it's not as much about the initial contact; it's the landing. Romo tends to take some awkward spills - with the full weight of defenders bearing down - because he's thinking more about the play he could be making downfield and less about his own well-being. He's not like a lot of passers who almost instinctively fold up like a lawn chair upon impact.
Sure, we might see a period in which he ducks under, living to play another down. But long-term over the course of a season? I don't see it.
What we are seeing from Dak Prescott is encouraging, but any change at starting QB this season or perhaps even next won't be by choice on the club's part. As well as Dak has performed to this point, you don't want him assuming this role for a while. His development will take time. For the sake of his future and that of the Cowboys, I really hope he gets that.
