Any chance this is Romo's last year wearing the star?

What's Tony's cap hit if he's cut after the season? I'm gonna guess a lot

If Tony Romo retires or gets released following this season, there would be $19.6M in dead money left on the salary cap.

Romo's 2017 cap number is $24.7M, so the net savings would be about $4.6M after adding a new player to take the QB's spot.

The contract would be off the books for 2018 and '19 ($48.9M).

Dallas could also designate Romo as a May/June release next year so only $10.7M of the dead money would be due with the remaining $8.9M hitting the books in 2018.

Going this route would open up around $13.6M in cap space next year and about $15.8M in '18.

The contract would be off the books for 2019 ($23.7M).

The total savings would be the same with either route, it's just a matter of when it hits the books.

The Cowboys would save $54M in cash, the remaining base salaries in Romo's contract.

The team can move on from Romo at this point without suffering a cap catastrophe, but I'm in no hurry for that day to arrive.

I don't know how many snaps Romo's body has left in it, but I hope it's at least another two seasons.

Pom poms and emotions aside it is a legit question. Say Tony gets hurt in week 6. Not very hard to imagine. Dak comes in and in the last 10 weeks plays great ball and leads them to the playoffs and plays well in the playoffs, there's no way the team doesn't sit back and say do we pay our brittle 37 year old qb franchise money or do we pay our young stud 4th rd pick money. Now as mentioned on here the cap may make that a moot point but from a football standpoint its a serious question.
Tony still has 4 years left on his contract and probably can't realistically be cut until 2018. So yes, even in your scenario Tony would almost certainly be the starter coming into the next season provided he could still play. Heck the 49ers once gave brittle old Joe Montana his job back after nearly 2 years of not playing and his replacement... wait for it.... actually winning the league MVP. So I'm fairly sure Dak would get a nice spot back on the bench.

Even if we see that Romo magic again it won't stop because one hit could still end it. Nobody says that Romo can't play when he's healthy.

One hit can end any career. Nothing has changed since 2014 when he was the highest rated Passer in the league and played 15 games.

Yes it has. He's 2 years older and sat out nearly a whole year. Not everybody in the league has a bad back. I've had back problems for 20 years. They get worse as you get older and I don't have 300 lb lineman trying to flatten me.

Sure it could be but it will take another season ending injury. Romo will hang on as long as possible and Jerry will let him due to loyalty and the cap. This is the twilight for Romo. He deserves all Cowboys fans respect and we should just sit back and enjoy his final days. I've been a huge critic but no more. He has given everything he has and now that we have a viable replacement, I'm perfectly fine allowing Romo whatever time he wants to continue his career. It will be over soon enough. I hope he goes out on some type of high note.

A heavy dose of the run game should help extend Romo's career, but he's going to need to change his style of play to limit the hits he's taking. He needs to limit the scrambling and throw the ball away more. Even with all that, there are no guarantees. All it takes is one good hit.

To answer the question, of course it could be his last year. Very realistically. The guy is 36 years old and has had relatively serious injuries.

With that, I hope he actually just retires when he's done, as a Cowboy.

I don't doubt it... just don't know how someone can declare he hasn't looked great. Based on what? If you went to the bathroom at the wrong times over the last couple of weeks, you'd probably wonder if he was still on the team.

You know the drill...Fair-weather fandom! 3 pre-season games and a bunch on this board want Romo kicked to the curb and Dax installed
as the next Cowboy savior. Not much changes on this board.

No, he's not taking Romo's job. Enough.

Now, he might be our QB next year because, frankly, it's possible that Romo could get hurt again this year and call it quits.
You know Candice has been in his ear since the Rams game. He has 2 kids. And if she is anything like my wife, she may even tell him Dak gives the Cowboys a better chance to win.

Sturm made the point in a recent article, but it isn't ground breaking news in regard to the era Dallas finds itself in.

Every hit on Romo will be a moment where we all hold our breath to see if he gets up. And as suggested by Sturm - again nothing earth shattering - there is a huge target on Romo's back. Both figuratively and literally.

So the question is valid, and the responses about several years of Romo under center is wishful thinking. I too wish for that, but there are factors of age and previous injury which makes any longevity seem iffy at best.

For 2016, if the Cowboys do not bring in a veteran QB, I set the over/under of games Dak starts at 6.5.

I'm taking the over! As much as it pains me to say so.

Any time Romo takes the field could be the last time he takes field.

Given his injury history you have to wonder how long the back will hold up. In the 4 games he did play last year he didn't exactly set the world on fire, and {so far}this year hasn't looked great and looks like he's lost some mobility.

The play he got hit on, his mobility looked pretty good to me... Last year was a very small sample size and he led a game winning drive in his first game and then shook off some rust and won the Dolphins game.... Where has anybody even been able to see if he lost his mobility or anything?

He's gonna make the perfect back-up..an aged vet that is capable of winning a game or 2.....let him stick around and back up Kellen.;)

Again with this? The answer was no all the other times and it hasn't or ever will change.
I hope that's the case, maybe it was just the media hype getting to me. If I were Jerry I'd explore trying to capitalize and maybe trading Dak.

If Dak sets the world on fire I would start getting curious as to how many draft picks we could get for him since we desperately need defense and there are a number of teams still without a starting QB, Broncos to name one
