IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered two fractured transverse process in his back in the loss to the Washington Commanders but there remains a chance he could play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, according to multiple sources.

The Cowboys and Romo have stressed this is not related to the disk surgery he had last December and is not a threat to end his season. Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty suffered a similar injury this season and missed just one game.

Tom Pennington/Getty ImagesTony Romo's latest injury is not related to the disk surgery he had last December and is not a threat to end his season.

ESPN's Ed Werder reported Romo would either start or be inactive against the Cardinals. He did not practice all week and is officially listed as questionable.

The transverse process is a small bone that sticks out from either side of the vertebrae. Romo has been receiving treatment multiple hours of treatment all week at the Cowboys' facility and at home.

Romo suffered the injury when he took a knee from Commanders linebacker Keenan Robinson on a third-quarter sack. After taking X-rays, which were negative, and receiving a pain-killing injection, Romo returned for the Cowboys' final two drives of the game. He had a CT scan on Tuesday.

A transverse fracture, which is broken straight across the bone, is the result of a sharp, direct blow or may be a stress fracture caused, for example, by prolonged running.

no matter how we cut it...its a broke bone in his back. Not the kind of thing you want to hear for a player who has 2 back surgeries recently.

Dude, it's just the little part that sticks out of the side of the bone. I'm sure it doesn't feel great, but it's not a big deal.

Gotta hand it to him. Romo is a tough guy.

BUT...I also don't want to see him play hero. For his well being and the team's. We need him to get back to good health. And we also don't need him out there in extreme pain leading to three INT's.

What if it's Conjunction Junction Dysfunction?

The horror...

If it's that, then Romo will play. lol

Actually, how long does it take to heal from that? It sounds like some little fractures of bones on the side of his spine, but it is nowhere near any vital organ.

Tony Romo Has 2 Fractured Transverse Process In Back, May Miss Week 9
by Josh Hill 11m ago

The Dallas Cowboys are hoping that the injury to Tony Romo isn’t serious, but he could end up missing some time with the latest diagnosis.

Tony Romo got bange dup in the Cowboys Monday night loss to the Washington Commanders and the ripple effect from that may take him out for a week or two as he recovers. The exact problem with Romo’s back wasn’t known until today but even now that the diagnosis has been made it doesn’t make understating his issues any easier.

According to Todd Archer from ESPN, Romo has 2 fractured transverse process in back, which is putting his status in question for this weekend’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

It’s not a fractured back that Romo has, so don’t go around thinking that. Instead, it’s an intricate part of the spine that is fractured and not allowing Romo to move freely or how he needs to move.

Basically, leave it to Tony Romo to have one of the most complicated injuries of the season. HE couldn’t have just done something simple like break a finger or twist an ankle. It wouldn’t be a Tony Romo situation though if it wasn’t overly complicated and impossible to understand, but like all other situations all we know is that it’s bad news for a surging Cowboys team that actually needs him for once.

I am more concerned that he has degenerative issues with his spine that allow fractures and other injuries to occur more easily. I know that he can play with it but whats this players realistic short term projection with all these bad issues.

Hard to say. I don't know if having 300lbs of guy smashing into one's back woudn't do that to most people.

So....this was not visible when they took xrays during the game Sunday? I think this qualifies as "structural damage."

That doesn't occur. His ability to play will be determined by his ability to function.

actually, younger NFL QB have crashing 300 lb guys hitting them all time. We just don't hear about it because they are fully healthy.

Should've known it was more than a contusion the way Garrett was stuttering at that Tuesday press conference.

It's not about just taking a hit. It's about getting hit directly in the spine right where that part of the bone is.

The news is getting worse with this. First it was just a bruise and now it's a couple of fractures. I find it hard to believe he'll be playing anytime soon with what sounds like a broken back. With this and still recuperating from back surgery this past offseason I sure hope in the next couple of weeks we don't hear he's done for the season.
