Are we fooling ourselves hitching our wagon to Tony Romo?

Pennington's arm isn't exactly hurting him, and he just had shoulder surgery

besides arm strength is overrated, it's about velocity and placement

I agree. Romo arm is strong enough to make the throws and his quick release is also a big assest. I think the main thing Tony needs is a bit better protection up front and a consistant running game. Romo too often was stuck in these 3rd and longs and yet was able to convert the majority of the time.

He did seem to get the 1st down on 3rd and long a lot. My son and I commented on that many times.

His reads, progressions and decisions seemed to suffer late in the season. He seemed hurried and rattled sometimes. Not comfortable in the pocket.

Not sure why that was, but lets hope JG can figure it out.

If you guys think Jerry is going to invest $5-$8 mil a year in Romo AND bring in a guy to compete 50/50 with Romo. You're nuts.

You can't go splitting the snaps between Romo and someone else... Romo needs most of the snaps.

Nothing else needs to be said.

Velocity requires arm strength...

FYI

Carry on...

Troy was the starter from the get go and the only time Steve saw any action was late in the season when Aikman was injured even in pre-season games Troy was getting the playing time with the starters. Romo has been competing for the last 4 years and has more than earned the job.

We drafed Aikman in the draft and Walsh in the supplemental draft of the same year. Since Johnson had coached Walsh in Miami, you can bet there was competition going on for the starting job at some point.

They competed and Troy won out.

I bet Johnson even secretly wanted Walsh to be the best, but Troy just flat was better.

Going by what I saw, teams were getting good pressure up the middle and containing the outsides. Too me that is more a statement about our OL than it is Romo. Our line play was poor and while Romo made it less of an issue he can't fix the problems up front and as teams contained on the outside and they were still getting a good push up the middle the QB has no pocket to work from and can't get outside yet Romo was still able to make plays even late in the season. I think Dallas has to fix the line. Myself I think Romo can do the job

I agree we need to fix the line.

But teams gameplanned to keep Romo in the pocket because they saw that as a weakness of his.

He needs to work on improving while in the pocket, so if teams force him to do that, he can make them pay.

He needs a pocket, the reason he was moving to the outside is the push coming up the middle. The reason to contain is because unlike Bledsoe, Romo was able to quickly move away from the pressure and get around the outside rusher. Teams did adjust by having the ends stay home but it does not change the main problem which was pressure coming up the middle and that will cause problems for any QB. Hopefully replacing Rivera will be a big help in giving Romo more of a clean pocket to work out of

Hopefully we will improve the O-line, but Romo has things he needs to improve on as well.

I would like to see quicker patterns, he is precise at those short distances.

with a pocket, and Romo not feeling the need to make big plays on every throw, you'll see more of that IMO

I agree. One thing I saw was Romo holding the ball too long when guys were not open. He needs to either run or throw it away. By not doing that it lead to some fumbles. I also think he has to guard against forcing passes. I think there are times a QB must be willing to squeeze a ball in their but he also has to know when to throw it away and fight another day. I once heard Roger say that was one the biggest things he learned was when to take chances and when not to but he learned that by playing the game.

But you also have to consider that over that stretch that the Cowboys played the #2 seed in the NFC, the #3 seed in the NFC, the #5 seed in the NFC and of course the defending NFL champs. Romo put up pretty decent numbers on the teams that weren't in the playoffs-- Detroit and Atlanta.

But you know it might help if we called a freaking slant once in a while...

I am, by far, the biggest QB elitest on this forum. I am all about the pedigree when it comes to QBs. It is the position that I harp on the most. It is the position I coached. I believe you need a good QB to go anywhere.

We are fine with Romo.

He doesn't have a huge arm, but he is accurate, makes good decisions, follows proper progressions on his reads, is smart, athletic, and charismatic so that his team follows him.

Save your hands from wringing and don't pull out your hair.

Oh, and our thoughts on the topic will have nothing to do with whether or not he gets a lucrative, long term contract. I can promise you that. This entire forum could hate him and it wouldn't stop the Cowboys from anything.

Most importantly in a short amount of games he has shown he can go win you the game and hes not one of those guys you hope doesnt lose it.

Just not the 30 yard variety.

I know, right? why settle for a 30 yard slant, when you can do a 50 yard slant? c'mon now

I agree. TR does need to learn to throw it away and not force plays that are not there.
