I don't expect anything from Dak. I just want to see if he continues to improve from the pre-season. Our season ended when Romo went down again unless Dak shocks everyone. I'm not going to sit around waiting for Romo to save us again. I did that last year. Just have to know if we have our future QB or not.

Improve on what? Best QB rating since 2000? What exactly is he "improving upon?"

Not saying he is going to play mistake free going forward, but he has already lit it up with a Vanilla offense and a bunch of second stringers.

Some people need to take a reality check and realize that OUR FUTURE is here staring us in the face. If you can't see that now I don't really know what else to say.

I understand what you're saying about expectations being too high within the fan base for Dak who has never even played a real NFL game (although I do think Seattle was pushing the bar for a preseason contest because it was the dress rehearsal, they hadn't looked good in the first two PS games, they were at home and Dallas had physically whipped them on their last trip to Seattle). I agree people are likely expecting too much.

However, I live smack in SEC country and watch a lot of it myself. The better SEC teams got to Dak early and often because of his surrounding cast and if that had "rattled" Prescott like you said... then he would have been that was for entire games at a time.

I saw it more as Dak trying to win a game that was pretty much unwinnable considering the discrepancy between the talent levels of he two teams. He was either being hit way too soon or he was taking what was essentially a calculated risk hoping that he could make something good happen for his team. I understand why you (and others) might see it as him getting rattled and making mistakes... but for Prescott, it was try to make a play or just take the sack... and not taking chances while getting sacked would never, ever win the game.

So he took risks that he likely wouldn't have with more competent team mates around him.

Dak is built so well that you could tell he wasn't afraid of getting hit. He never had the look of a QB getting beaten up with that wild Bradford look in his eyes. He wasn't worried about getting hit and the physical part of the game, IMO, didn't rattle him. He just wanted to win and with the only option to try to do so being throwing the ball down the field into coverage he probably knew wasn't favorable... he did so.

At least that is how I saw it while he was playing at State.

Now, does that mean he won't throw some bad passes now that he has a good offense around him? Of course not. Hell, he threw a couple of bad one's in the preseason already. He will make some ill advised throws, and he will get picked off some. That is going to happen.

However, he has made those bad throws at a minuscule rate when compared to other rookie QB's in their PS games going back decades. While we know he is going to make mistakes... he has shown that he does have poise, doesn't get rattled easily, can read defenses, make the correct throw, use his legs to get out of trouble, and that the big stage certainly doesn't phase him in the slightest.

You're certainly correct in cautioning people that Prescott is a rookie and is going to make mistakes... but I think the kid is also going to make some very good plays for the team and will hurt/scare defenses with his legs.

And the best thing about Dak is what I haven't even mentioned: His ability to inspire his team mates with confidence and the uncanny way that his team always, always plays for him like it is their last day on Earth. People run through walls for Dak and just like Staubach's team mates felt like he would win it for them... Prescott's teams always feel like he can take them to the promised land.

There is a chance Prescott is overwhelmed, I agree. There is also a chance he shocks the NFL too. I can't wait to see which it is.

Awesome post and a great read bro!
Thanks for putting it up.
I've lurked/stalked this board since 2010 when i bought my first smartphone and enjoy some/most of your posts, I kinda like that 'gimmetheball' dude especially when he goes east German/stasis (hilarious)
But to feed my intellect on high octane I gotta have me more 'plastic man',, or at least Christopher Walken keeping the beat with a cowbell.

I want to see it in the regular season. I like what I've seen so far but until the games start for real, the jury is still out.

I hear you, I think the jury is still out on some of our fans who cannot get behind the best QB we will draft in our generation. This whole Romo "tap the brakes" crowd needs to find another team to pull for. Simply amazing... The negativity on some people.

I like him a lot and he's been very impressive but I've seen this before in the pretend season with a variety of positions but especially the QB position. Best to tell yourself "it's not real" over and over.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but where have you seen this before? Because I've been watching the NFL for a long time and haven't seen this "same old thing" re: Dak Prescott's performance - in totality, too, not just numbers.

True!

But Dallas has changed up their offense already tremendously this pre season for Dak. In order to help his transition and confidence they HAVE been game planning with him.
Smart move to, I might add.
It has helped everyone involved.

Dak is much better just by virtue of being younger of selling the screen game and running boots and naked boots.

We might be a little less predictable, honestly.

Well that isn't me because I think Tony is about done. Have to see more though. Has to be room for another crowd " the Romo is done but not ready to crown Dak the next Joe Montana, crowd."

Are you ready for the juggernaut of a running attack that we are about to unleash on the rest of the league?

Are you ready to see our offensive line take it to even greater heights?

Are you ready to witness a formidable clock eating run game that will be even better than the Demarco years?

Are you ready to see Dak settle in behind all of that?

I most definitely am! I'll save a seat for you.
If it's the seat in your avatar, I'm ready!

If we utilize screens and quick passing game/back shoulder throws we'll be fine. Anything but being predictable and well be fine. Play action, bootlegs. The complication is kind of overrated to me. It'll only be complicated on 3rd and long with blitzes.

If you think Spagnuolo will wait for third down to blitz, I think you will be surprised. However, I still think Dak can handle it.

I see Dallas scoring 30. Unfortunately, I see the Giants scoring even more.

Agree on the blitz. Unlike Rod he seems to like using it.

I have a hard time seeing the Giants getting up into the 30s. Maybe they were just playing possum, but from what I saw of their 1st stringers it didn't look like they were on the same page. And I don't just mean just 1 or 2 plays, but the whole time they were on the field. Maybe it's just working the kinks out of a new system. But wasn't the HC the OC last season?

Only 6 more days & we'll both get a good taste of what we have to work with.

The reality is QB's often are provided their opportunity in the event of an injury to the starter. And to an aging recently injury riddled QB .
Not to even even mention the emotion surrounding Romo's career and the desperate attempt to validate his career with a championship .

This is an unusual situation because Dak is a Rookie and we've just seen him not only have the best debut by a QB in Cowboy history but the best preseason by any QB in the NFL which provides for an overly optimistic outlook and probably a less realistic attitude going into the season .

I imagine a much different outlook if we were starting the season with Moore, Showers or Sanchez.

I know the odds aren't high that a rookie QB, especially a 4th rounder, will be successful from day one. But I also am encouraged by his play in the preseason, exceeding all expectations. I don't really expect him to match that same success in the regular season but do hope he is more than serviceable and continues to improve. I know there is also a good chance teams will throw everything at him and he struggles, but hopefully he will continue to surprise and play well and along with the run game we can have a solid offense.

Interestingly in the Cap era there has been more success by Rookie QB's than before.

Exactly. If we struggle and the losses mount then I don't expect to go on a roll when Romo comes back. But if we happen to be above .500 when Romo is ready to return then we'll have an interesting dilemma whether to sit Dak and turn it over to Tony just to wait to see if/when he goes down again.

Blitz early and let Zeke run by. Fine with me. Or get some read option going.

I'm looking forward to the discussions on handicapping this game. The line has already shifted dramatically.

But sounds like your predicting the over. Not often the Cowboys are a dog to open the season at home.
