ARTICLE: Former Cowboy Mel Renfro has advice for S Roy Williams

no way Roy is moved to LB and paid safety money. no way.

we need to just drop it... its stupid.

It is stupid, but there are some high paid LB's in the league..........Theoretically you have to decide, which came first the chicken or the egg. Is it always Roy's fault that he's burnt in coverage. I mean it can be possible that there is a lack of communication on the field, especially with Jacque Reeves playing on that side. But, at some point Roy has to be accountable for his actions.

What the heck is Mel thinking? How could he, of all people, criticize Roy? It's not like he's an all-time Cowboy's great. Who does this guy think he is — some kind of hall-of-famer or something?

He used his own eyes, subjective thoughts and provided NO stats to support his preposterous opinions on Roy's play?

Roy at linebacker? Beat and beat OFTEN? His play HURTS the Cowboys?

That is true Cowboy's blasphemy.

Doesn't he read this message board? Doesn't he know, like so many here, that Roy is great and could never be subject to such criticism (especially by some kind of football expert)? You'd think that this guy, Renfro, would've played for many years, at a high level, and might know what he's talking about, but not me. You guys have taught me well.

I believe all the guys on this board who "played DB" at some college or even in "high school" who use some device called Tivo to set us straight on our football - those guys have to know what they're talking about. In fact, I didn't play at the collegiate level, so I can't possibly know anything about football. It's a good thing I have this board to set me straight.

Perhaps, we should direct Mr Renfro to this board to have him set straight on Roy!

:laugh2:

I think it's naive to think no one has worked with Williams, but it's a matter of Williams making it a priority. Maybe public criticism will make him work harder--or maybe it will make him cry...

Also, I can't help it--what is "a grain of fault"??? ;)

I would consider it constructive criticism. Mel is not saying that Roy sucks he is giving advice. Roy could take it 1 of 2 ways as a slap or advice from a former star who wants to see Roy improve.

hes never play ILB his entire life, what hes just gonna make the jump now? 5 years into playing in the NFL?

give me a break.

Roy is almost playing linebacker now in many of the schemes Wade is using. We are seeing roy at the line much more than deep.

It is different. Aikman will point out that he has trouble in coverage. He doesn't start giving public lessons on how he should correct these issues.

No difference, it's still a "Public Announcement"..........Roy Williams can't cover. I used to live in Rancho Dominguez, Ca and when the Cowboys held their practice at Oxnard, I was there everyday. In just about all the drills, over 50% of the time Roy was getting toasted. Mel Renfro is absolutely correct, Roy Williams has bad footing. It's no surprise, and please don't get me wrong I like Roy and was on board when he was drafted (and was on board when I thought Everage and Roy would be good together in the NFL, but unfortunately the latter was a bust).......Nevertheless I like Roy, but I love the Cowboys and one person does not make the team, however one person can lead to the team losing because he has cover issues..........

Exactly what I'm talking about!

Mel couldn't possibly be suggesting taking the best safety in the league (and universe?), according to a lot of us on this board, and having him switch positions?!?!?!

That would be ludicrous.

Suggesting that Roy no longer be a safety. What a jokester.

Then Mel should show up at the Ranch and show him how it is done. Maybe while he is there, he could teach some ball skills to the entire secondary.

Look, another Roy Williams thread.

Mel means well but what he forgets is who takes Roy's place at safety? Killa?

LOL,..........What I'm about to say is blasphemy, but I would take Sean Taylor, Bryan Dawkins, or Ed Reed over Roy W..........Any day!!!

No to any of those but yes to Landry!

I doubt that the Cowboys will move him to LB and Renfro did say he did not know if that was the answerer. Working on your foot work with certain drills can be done. Roy in underneath coverage does a good job but too often Roy gets caught looking inside at the QB and when the man he is covering takes off Roy gets turned around and has to play catch up. For me I don't think Roy is as great as some say but I don't think he is bad as others tend to try and point out.

Landry can't hold Ed Reeds jock right now.............The biggest problem with Roy W right now is his speed. Speed can neutralize bad footing and technique. That is what those other aforementioned Safeties have over him. Also, Roy gets caught up looking into the eyes of the QB, and when the QB sees that, Roy is toast. Case in point are a couple of those Td's Plaxico had against us in the first game.

"You might want to have him add a few pounds and play a linebacker position, but I don't know if that's the answer. Working on his quickness and footwork and his ability to find the ball in the air would make a difference."

You people make it sound like Roy is a lost cause.

Renfro clearly said that the weakness of Roy was the DEEP BALL, and considering he is a strong safety, what do you expect? Mel wasn't a SS either...

Nobody said Roy is superman...

Exactly!

Per Mel..."I think someone just needs to work with him."

How conveniently that line is skipped right over.

Mel Renfro is not saying what these guys are saying, but you'd never know it reading their responses. It's amazing.

Yet he has to cover the deep ball on 3rd downs quite often and becomes toast

Roy's weakness is more than just the deep ball and no one expects him to be Superman.......we just want him to be Spiderman for now! One would think that as long as he's been in the league he would've improved his foot work by now......But every year it's status quo. Roy is better when there is a decent CB playing on his side, along with a decent LB. I would also say that he's better in certain packages.

Maybe not now but he's working on it. I would take the combo of Landry and Taylor over any other safety tandem except maybe Harris and Waters. :D

Well, maybe you will go to work tomorrow and instead of your boss taking you in the back room to tell you how you're not doing something right he will make an announcement to the entire company or place it in the company news letter.

True HOS, but wouldn't you think that someone has been doing this by now....I mean especially when Parcells was here, don't you think he and the secondary coaches spent time with him in the film room and gave him a list of things to improve on......Geesh, it's a lost cause. Roy has been given a lot of money to perform, and he's barely meeting expectations. Woody was at least 6x's better than Roy.

Office environment and football are 2 different animals. Renfro was interviewed and gave advice Roy can take it or not. But comparing something as visible as pro sports and the office you work in is like comparing apples to oranges. Every single week during pre-game and post game former players and coaches critique players this is no different.
