At what point must we make a move for DE?

What's it going to be then, eh?

Crossing fingers on Ty Crawford. But first 2 weeks, no Irving, no Damontre Moore, maybe no Crawford. So we're left with only D Law, Mayowa, Taco, Tapper. Not good. At what point do you sign a guy like Dwight Freeney or Mario Williams, or coax D Ware out of retirement? You can always cut Freeney or Williams after 2 or 4 games when the others return.

You are still on the hook for that veteran's salary unless you sign them after the opener.

That is just not in our model.

I get your concerns and what you are trying to say, but that kind of move is so outside of our nature and how we do business, I refuse to indulge in considering we actually do it.

It doesn't take a full year for me to evaluate the performance of my employees. And hoping that a player will improve is not a solution. Injuries happen, good front offices will factor that in when projecting productivity.

More competition, more talent is not something to shy away from and the best companies not only embrace it, they absolutely encourage it. I would not settle on Mayowa, TCraw, DLaw or Tapper. Neither of these guys have earned that protection. If an acquisition outplays them, then that is for the best of the team.

There needs to come a time when the best defense on this team is not having the offense playing more and the D playing less. Championships are still won by defense. If Cowboys are serious about fighting for a ring THIS season then this needs to addressed sooner rather than later.

I'm sure the Will McClay & Co. will be evaluating players on an continuing basis and if a better player becomes available and is affordable they'll pursue the opportunity.

The Cowboys will not pay the premium price demanded for a former Pro Bowl veteran. they will not give up a pick higher than a 6th round pick in a trade. There is not going to be some blockbuster deal that gives us a premium NFL starter. It's next man up. now someone new will get an opportunity to turn heads.

The Cowboys are by no means staying pat. They are looking in every corner of the football world to add another guy. I think the same as many, the Cowboys are going to add bubble players cut from other teams. the names won't be recognizable but they will get a real chance to play in this rotational scheme.

No thanks. I'm not going to freak out and go short on another position and change my roster over a sprained ankle and a 2-game experience. We have plenty of DEs, and our two best pass rushers are still healthy and ready to roll (DLaw & Mayowa). You don't roll over your roster unless it's long-term.

Finally roster spots are at a premium.

I can't envision them cutting:
Crawford
Lawrence
Tapper
Mayowa
Irving
Charlton

That's 6 guys right there? Those guys are flat-out safe.

Then you have Moore who by many accounts has looked darned good in camp.

Exactly. Add in Neal, who might have something. We've got an extraordinary number of 'OK' defensive ends. We just don't have any that are extraordinary.

No need to bring in more.

Well you ain't going to get anything but retreads or guys that are unaffordable until the offseason.

In addition you may have a better than "OK" guy on the roster.

Cowboy fans are simply going to have to give some of these guys like Tapper & Charlton time.

Not Cowboy fans... They'll gut a roster faster than you can say "Jack Robinson".

Good question. I would say bottom 5?

Yep, I agree. I would be hard pressed to find any DE group that is worse then that. Dline got younger and worse. Secondary got younger and is the same if not worse. Linebacker has a real shot to improve with Smith, but how much can we count on him? Will Wilson get suspended?
