No its not. The difference is intent. Brent made a stupid decision in a diminished capacity but clearly didn't intended to hurt anyone. Ray Rice consciously punched a defenseless woman in the face and knocked her unsconcious.

and Brent has served jail time and a significant suspension for doing so.

From the way everything has gone down, maybe he thought the NFL and Ravens didn't have the full footage and he lied about what actually happened.

I live near Baltimore. Listening to the radio this morning, Rice was the topic of discussion. It was mentioned that NFL security consists of former FBI agents. I would guess NFL security and Ravens management saw the assault video.

The league was given information that appears inaccurate - the entire Rice defense was that his wife was attacking him. His freaking wife told the league this. Clearly she was yelling at him but he's obviously in no physical danger.

Did anyone really believe that NFL running back Ray Rice would ever be in enough physical danger to knock out his fiance?

Were they stupid enough to believe the video would never be released? There is not a chance in the world that the NFL didn't know exactly what happened. They'd have to be morons to believe him at his word on this issue, it's not the first time in history that domestic abuse has taken place.

WOW is right!!! Neither did I,

After seeing the video though....dang....I mean I thought he deserved more than 2 games anyway, when I didn't see what happened, but now that I have I'm applauding the Ravens for firing him. I hope no one ever picks him up. I hope that his career just came to an end.

That's disgusting.

That's what I recall when it first happened was that everyone was speculating, based on what was said by her and Rice, was that she had attacked him and that he was defending himself. I remember arguing at the time that her slapping or hitting him wasn't reason enough for him to strike her back.

I can only guess that they told the league this because the league didn't have access to the video at the time? I don't know. I can see how they saw it and just let it go until it went public but even that I'm not sure about. I mean if you were a league, or Ravens official, and you did see that video way back when it happened would you really just let it go hoping it wouldn't get out? Especially in this day and age? I find it pretty unlikely that they'd think that it would just go away so I have to lean toward the idea that they had not seen the tape and handed down the suspensions based on what Rice and his wife told them.

I just can't see how the NFL people would have seen that video and thought it was a good idea to just try and sweep it under the rug like the video wouldn't ever get out or be seen.

Drunk driving is intentional, killing your passenger clearly is not - which is why Brent was convicted of Manslaugher and not Murder.

More people die in car wrecks caused by excessive speed than by drunk drivers. If you apply your logic, everyone who has ever exceeded the speed limit is guilty of Murder. Which I would bet includes every poster here. I'm not defending Brent's actions, just drawing the comparison that he didn't intend to hurt anyone while Rice clearly did.

You don't know what mindframe Rice was in, and I'm not trying to defend the guy because his actions are deplorable, but the fact remains is that Josh Brent should not be on this team either. His actions led to the death of a person whether it was intentional or unintentional.

Its pathetic that Rice didn't lose this job for actually knocking his wife out, but because video of it went public.

True.
Isn't this double jeopardy?
He admitted to punching her(which by the way it is never acceptable).
He got his due process, but now that we have a visual, does it really make it worse?
He was handed a punishment, albeit light, but because now we saw what we already knew happened, hos does that change anything?

I highly doubt this is the 1st time management saw the video of Rice punching out his fiancé.

At least they did the right thing.

The right thing would have been to do this off the bat not when it looks worse on the NFL after the video comes out.

Goodell has said that Rice's wife's testimony was the most compelling piece in terms of his decision - clearly if they had seen that video there is no way her testimony would have mattered.

Like I said, I don't think anyone reasonably could believe that they had seen this video.

That's pretty much my thoughts on it as well. I took it that Goodell listened to what she said and he based the decision off of that. I'm also thinking that is why the league didn't pursue any video really because they allowed what her, and Ray, told them to be enough.

I can't imagine anyone seeing that video and being like "OK. Two game suspension."

I remember when it happened everyone's contention was that she said she was attacking him and that's why he did it. I remember that very clearly. It's obvious from the video that he lied, and he got her to lie with him, to cover his butt from further trouble.

Ray Rice is a useless bag of filth. I hope he never gets another down in the NFL and I hope someone knocks him out cold sometime real soon.

Light came on and the Commish and Ravens are running like cockroaches and breaking their necks trying to punish Ray Rice after the crap they pulled with just giving him a couple of games earlier.

I hope this stink fest continues for a while because I believe they were hoping it would go away but with the video out there now they could not keep hoping it would go away on it's own.

Good for the Ravens

Lol. Seriously? Goodell and the Ravens have seen this video way before now. Don't be naive that they didn't. They tried to sweep this under the rug and it didn't work.

Goodell should be terminated as well for covering this up. Don't act like the ravens or Goodell is clean in this and they are doing the right thing.
