My own experience has been that xrays aren't that great for distinguishing bruised from cracked ribs. They are useful to rule out other more major injuries such as pulmonary (lung) contusions (bruises), pneuomothorax (collapsed lung).
Many missed rib fractures are picked up on CT scans.
Having said that, these things heal on their own and the pain of bruised ribs can actually outlast the pain or a rib fracture. It'll be interesting to see how much time if any he misses.
