It just doesn't do it for me. I'm not a big fan of spending vacations in crowded cities being rushed to do this or that.

Give me a quiet river in the mountains, watching wildlife, a cool summer breeze, and no cell phones or watches within 20 miles of me.

thats a vacation. At least to me.
You didn't even mention Dutch oven cobblers, tin foil dinners, s'mores, or any of the other great camp foods. There are times when I prefer a campfire hot dog over prime rib. It has everything to do with the solitude of the outdoors. I love hiking.

Back before I had kids my wife used to take me to the base of Mt. Lemmon every summer. I would load a backpack up with apples and a couple of my favorite books and I would spend a week hiking and camping away from people. After a week of cleaning myself out I would hike down the mountain and she'd pick me up.

Nothing like leaving the stresses of life behind.

paris is great
so is london

best trip though was to egypt.

very friendly people
great food

in europe, you visit things that are a few hundred years old and you marvel at them, then you visit a place like cairo and see things that are 6 thousand years old, visit the pyramids and truly see what man can do and you realize that, as good as it is, europe pales in comparison.

Not exactly true, I saw things that are 2000 years old when I was in Rome, hell I saw the bones of a person who is 3000 years old but I do know what you mean.

One of the funniest parts of my trip occurred in the ruins of Pompeii. The tour guide showed us the cathouse and above the rooms were paintings depicting sexual positions. I figured that is what you did in each particular room. One woman commented that one of them was physically impossible. I had to laugh at her comment.

One problem with Italy is that the churches are pretty anal about how you dress when you see them. They require knees and shoulders to be covered. Given the heat in Italy in the summer, it was not pleasant to see the Vatican in pants to say the least. At least all my shorts are to the knee or lower so I didn't have to worry afterward. The pants I wore to St Peter's were tearaway pants so after left, just took the bottoms off and voila, I had shorts on. Still in my view it is silly to make you cover up that much especially since it didn't matter how much cleavage a woman showed as long as her shoulders were covered

Few hundred? Try a couple of thousand years old. The Colosseum, Forum and Pantheon are all about 2,000+ years old.

Egypt is on my places to visit just for the pyramids and stuff, but one thing I'm always told by people who have visited Egypt is that it is extremely dirty. Large dead animals just left on the side of the road and by large, I'm talking cows not dogs though you seem them too.

Pantheon and Collosseum are less than 2000, Forum is older than 2000.

You're right, I guess my memory is slightly hazed over the years since my trip to Roma.

The original Pantheon was built in 27BC which would make it 2037 years old, but it was completely destroyed (more than once I might add) and then finally rebuilt the last time in 110AD which would make it 1,900 years old.

The Collosseum was started in 70-72AD and completed 80AD making it 1,940 years old.

I was wrong, but I knew I wasn't far off. I specifically remember them being at least around 2,000 years old.

I've been a lot of places. I've been to Europe, South America, Far East and a lot in between. I've been to Canada and Mexico. I've been pretty much everywhere in the U.S. I've stayed in 5 Star Hotels and eaten at fine Restaurants but for me, I'll take Montana up near the Beartooth in the Yellowstone. Big Timber area. As good a fishing and hunting as you'll find anywhere in the world. Tent, fire, fly rode and eating whatever you cook for yourself is my idea of a real vacation. No cells, no TV, no wireless. I would take that any day over anyplace.

Tell me something. If you guys love camping and stuff so much. Why don't you change your lifestyle for it. You know, Grizzle Adams it. Move out there and live off the land?

That would make life a vacation right?

/shurg. Thats what I would do if I was that into it. I do what I do for a living, because it's what I've enjoyed my entire life. You gotta do what you love.

BoyScout camp in Colorado

Hey what was not to like 40 boys on a bus 16 hour trip each way

8,500 feet above sea level hiking up to 9000 feet above see level

Sleeping in a tent with a wooden pallet floor, Outhouse, cold showers

Bears, terrible camp food

White Water rafting down the Arkansas River, jumping in 40 degree water at 5:45am twice

Helping qualify 14 of my guys in Archery

What is not to like

Kauai, Hawaii. Flew out there to get married in 2006, and it was amazing.

It's the western-most island, and least commercialized. Exploring the island, snorkeling, Luau's, etc etc etc. It was simply amazing.

Washington, DC to spend a week seeing all the sites. I spent 3 days just visiting the Smithsonian museums. The only site I did not make it to was Arlington, and I will do that the next time I go. The Holocaust Museum was so mind blowing. I was emotional as I have ever been. Especially walking through the box car that they had used to transport the Jews like cattle.

I've been all over the world (except anywhere in Asia), but Washington DC would probably rank #2 for me. Just an enjoyable family trip taking in all the museums.

Well, I do own a house in the Mountains, here in New Mexico. I can only speak for myself but if I could do what you suggest, I wouldn't mind that at all. Unfortunately, my wife does not share my enthusiasm for the life style.

I can see the draw. If you survive the 40 boys, I'd imagine that's a story to tell.

Good for you Roo!

I don't know about *best*, because I've had a lot of great vacations, but I just got back from Costa Rica. ATV shredding in the shadow of an active volcano, howler monkeys raising hell outside your windows, up to my neck in bathwater on the Pacific coast, zip lining in the rain through the cloud forest, and a jacuzzi with my wife in a two story four-star 'treehouse' that puts my real house to shame. Also, I was drunk.

CR's a pretty damn cool place. The Ticos are really fun people, and the little country has literally twice the biodiversity of North America and Europe. Combined.

I been to DC on the Museum front I only made it to the Aero _Space Museum since we where in Aviation school for the Military it was the one we had to see besides all the War Monuments.

Personally for me the Changing of the Guard was what I was most excited about it since I was about 8 years old I always wanted to see that live and when a group of guys wanted to head to DC when we where in training in VA I said I am all in did not care about the cost one bit.

I would go back and just watch that again if that was all I was allowed to do.

I only knew that stuff as I was there less than a month ago.

We were there for 2 weeks (not just Rome but Pompeii, Venice, Pisa, Florence, Bologna, San Gimignano and Assisi), my six year old loved it as much as my wife and I did. Cost us about $20000 in total but it was worth every penny.
