English speakers not learning other languages is pure laziness. Even in french milieus where I can speak French, if the french speaker speaks to me in English, I go in english as it is easier for me.
In Italy, if I knew the Italian person knew English, I didn't even try a few words in Italian. My wife did a few times, like grazie, prego, quanto costo etc. I took the easy way out most of the time.
English is the dominant language in the world so we take the easy way out and expect the rest of the world to speak to us in our language.
