Jealous. My ignorance of other languages is one reason I've never been to Europe. I don't want to be that American.

You know what the French chick said in Braveheart? Englishmen don't know what their tongues are good for...

Most in Europe are fine with you only knowing English. I never had a problem, my wife was ignored in a shoe store as the Italian women were served first but other than that, no biggie.

I do admire the Europeans like one of our tour guides who could talk English, Italian, Spanish and French.

That is uber cool. I met a person from Germany who spoke eight languages. This is one area in which American attitudes need to change, in my opinion.

Well, it's kind of pointless to learn another language. Other than Spanish. Or Arabic, if you're going to join the CIA. Or Russian and Chinese for the same reason.

Americans would speak a lot more languages if you had to in order to communicate from state to state. It bugs me when Europeans try to make it out that speaking only English is a sign of American arrogance rather than a practical consequence of where we live.

This is an excellent point. We are stronger, as a country, then all of the European countries because of the commonality of our language. Europeans could not over come this barrier and as such, never banned together to become a stronger Nation. Really great point Idgit.

This is very true. Without an opportunity to apply a newly learned language, it seldom sticks within one's mind.

which one?

As someone else has posted, there are so many languages spoken across Europe, there is no way you could know them all.

It is though another thing that a lot of the residents of the US & UK have in common, a poor grasp of foreign languages.

I think it is partly due to the fact that a lot of other countries learn English as it has historically been the main common business language. For instance several years ago the German & French leaders met for talks & as neither would speak the others language they communicated in English.

It is still a sad endightment of the English speaking countries that we don't bother to learn other languages. I have to say I am somewhat embarrased that my 14 yr old son can speak more French & Geman than I can

We are off on our Annual holiday/vacation next week.

We are flying into San Francisco & having a two week tour around California (which is going to include the Cowboys pre season game in San Diego).

I'm really looking forward to that.

Probably the favourite places we have visited so far have been Barcelona as a City break & Lindos (on Rhodes) as a beach holiday.

Now see. If you had instead visited a country that spoke a different language you could have learned a different language. Instead you choose to stick with a country that speaks English! :laugh2:

San Francisco and San Diego are both nice. (parts anyhow) Good choice.

Italy. I'm not saying you have to be versed in many languages. But if you are living in a country for a significant amount of time. You should at least attempt to learn the language.
