A few days ago, I was having a debate with a friend of mine who is also a Boys fan. He insisted that the 2007 team was far superior than our 2014 team. I disagreed for the following reasons;

-Better coaching

-Better QB play

-Better O-Line/Run game

I will admit that defense was far superior than this past years, but I just had that feeling that we could beat any team if we played our best ball. I felt like we would have no chance vs the undefeated Pats.

What do you guys think?

As for Romo, I'm guessing his smarts and knowledge is what separates him from the 2007 Romo. But arm strength, athleticism, no back prob's can only help.

True. Dont forget decision making too. He threw 19 ints that season.

It's a wash. 2007 defense was better. 2014 offense was better. Both teams faced shaky calls by the refs - 2007 #itwasnotintentionalgrounding, 2014 #itwasacatch. Neither team got the job done.

2007

Better coach, better defense, more athletic Romo.

If TO didn't get hurt against Carolina there is no way they don't make the NFC Championship game at least.

2014 team was lucky to get out of the wildcard round.

Well I'm sure the OL had some to do with that (pressure getting to him). The 2012 Romo also had 19 ints. But yes his knowledge of the game showed last year.

Football Outsiders' DVOA rankings say 2007 was better -- mostly because the defense was much better. The offenses and special teams were quite similar (2007 offense was fourth with a 16.6 DVOA, and 2014 offense was fourth with a 16.8 DVOA; 2007 ST was 18th at -0.4, and 2014 ST was 13th at 0.9). The 2007 defense, however, was ninth at -6.8 (negative being better for the defense), and the 2014 defense was 22nd at +4.0. Overall, the 2007 team was fourth at 22.9, and the 2014 team was sixth at 13.7.

I have to agree with you. The 2007 Cowboys were on the cusp of collapse with the overall age of the team, as evidenced by the years that followed. The 2014 team was just scratching the surface of their potential and very well could be even better in 2015. Add to that the running game we had and I'm pretty sure the 2014 iteration would beat the 2007 version of the Cowboys. Just my opinion, though.

The 14 defense would struggle against the 07 offense, but with Crayton and Fasano dropping balls, you never know.:D

I have to also agree with the addition of Sean Lee, Rolando McClain, and Greg Hardy has to be a considered direction on the defensive side of the ball.

I think people forget how relatively weak our defense is still, overall. It was greatly improved--to pretty mediocre last season. That shows you how bad it was. We've still got a long ways to go on that side of the football.

And note, this is consistent with what I've believed for at least the last three seasons. The problem has not been the QB and it has not been the HC. And the strength of this team is not in the person we have running the ball. The team's been really deficient defensively for years now, and it's hurt us badly when we have to play teams who have good QBs and good offenses, as a result. You can't win a slug-fest when you take more damage than the other guy each time a punch is thrown.

So, to the OP, 2007 was a better team, overall, and mainly on the strength of that DL. We've got a good chance to push to better that here in 2015 if we use our dollars and our high picks the right way. It looks like the team understands that. Fingers are crossed.

You make great points @Idgit but I cant see that 2007 going in to Seattle and winning the way we did. Yes our defense was better by far that year, but the formula we used to dominate teams also is a main reason I think 2014 was a better team. Honestly in our 5 losses, our offense failed us more than the Defense imo with untimely turnovers and poor execution.

Nobody on our 07 defense is covering dez, and Beasley is gonna carve as well. Ware against Tyron is a marquee match up but otherwise our oline is stonewalling everybody else. Romo is a much more cerebral assassin now, and the running game was best in the league. So idk that the 07 team really has an advantage

Hard to say. That 13-3 team coasted to the #1 seed in week 17. They had the tough loss to the Patriots after both teams started undefeated, but that Pats team was better than the version of SEA we played last year, too. And I think that Giants playoff team from 2007 probably beats that SEA team from 2014, too, honestly. They were just playing really great football.
Either way, though, both of those Cowboys teams were fun to watch. And I do think this year's version is likely better in terms of talent than last years.
