Better To Bite The Bullet Than Extend Dak

Chiefs had Alex Smith who is basically a Dak clone someone that had a winning record in the regular season but would flame out early in the playoffs. They traded up in the draft and got Mahomes while still having Smith.

I know that that's not the Cowboys though. I expect Dak to be here until he's 38, but I do not expect a Super Bowl in that time period. Would love to be proven wrong, but this is Dak's 8th year and it's basically Romo era redux.
The only way this team is going to get a Super Bowl ring, is if they balance the offense. We either have a great passing game, or a great running game never both at the same time.

Dallas is in no position to do that unless they believe Trey Lance is the answer or they find another QB in the 2024 or 2025 offseason. Dak's contract is up after the 2024 season and it has a clause in it that says he can't be Franchise Tagged. Dak could enter free agency after the 2024 season and leave and Dallas could do nothing about it. If Dallas really wants to keep Dak they need to get something done this offseason. If they don't then they could be looking for a QB in 2025.

Another poor negotiating job by the front office. Not only did they pay Dak premium money at the time but they also gave into a shorter term contract (4 years) and gave up the right to franchise him when he became a free agent. The Jones boy's are like the guy that goes into a car dealership and not only pays above MSRP but pays extra to have a steering wheel and tires on the car.

It’s going to be difficult to win with the money he makes now.

Gallup needs to go too. Not worth the money.
One offensive lineman, running back away from being totally balanced. Imagine if we actually had a running game.

Does Dak have a no trade clause?

We had 17 different starting quarterbacks between Troy, Aikman, and Tony Romo. How many do you think it would take after Prescott to find a quarterback. I think 20.
Doubtful it will take remotely that many. The team's scouting infrastructure is much improved over the Aikman-to-Romo stretch.

I don’t know I don’t think the players are out there. i’m hoping Trey Lance turns into something, but he’s not going to sit behind Prescott for long.

Whats the alternative? You think Trey Lance can do better?
I don’t think anybody knows what lance is capable of . I have no problem with the MVP. I have a problem with the line in the running game. When we fix that it will be something else.

There are available players every year. It takes proper evaluation, draft positioning and sometimes a bit of luck in acquiring them.

"Lance is not going to sit behind Prescott for long?" ??? What do you know? Did you get Jerry Jones drunk enough to spill his guts or something?

I dunno.

I’d really kinda like to see the mental gymnastics Jerry pulls trying to justify a Dak extension after a Wild Card loss.
Jerry is in his 80s, rapidly approaching senility or worse. He ain't starting over, if Dak keeps the team relevant and there is some chance that if everything falls right they'll be right there in the conversation for the Super Bowl. That probably won't happen unless the teams in front of them suffer massive injuries at key positions, but Jerry likes those chances better than trying to go from scratch.

Gosh, they're in year 8 with Dak, right? What is the average lifespan of a NFL QB to perform well before declining? Not many play 20byears like Brady. I just don't think it's a wise choice to give Dak a new, $60mil/year contract. That means the FO will probably do it.

Nope. Totally disagree. It definitely is Dak hating, especially since this is the best passer rating season Dak has had (8 years in through his career). Dak has gotten better, not worse, as he's gotten older. His numbers prove you wrong.
You are not looking at it objectively then. He hast hit a ceiling in his play especially in big moments, just look at the opportunities in his last 2 seasons.

they are not gonna pay Dak 60 million next season.

not happening.

Unless he wins the Super Bowl. Then he will be richly rewarded by Jerry.
