As a Michigan fan I like Schoomaker. I think he is solid. However, I am not sure he is much better than Ferguson or Hendershot so why waste the pick. I would have picked the Oline man from Florida
Because they need two starting tight ends in 12 personnel, and Schoonmaker and Ferguson will both start. There was a run on tight ends in the 2nd round, with 5 selected in the 2nd round. The Cowboys obviously were looking for a TE who is more than a receiver. Among the top 5 TE's picked (Kincaid, La Porta, Mayer, Musgrave and Schoonmaker, Schoonmaker may be the best blocker amoung all of them, who also has good potential as a receiver. Ferguson also was drafted last year in the 4th round (similar to Schultz) because he has both blocking and receiving ability. If the Cowboys want a more effective run game, then they NEED TE's that can block. Kincaid, La Porta and Musgrave are poor blockers at best, and more resemble large WR's.
As for skipping on Torrance at #58, they obviously have a plan at Left Guard, which many fans and pundits apparently don't believe. If you include Tyler Smith as an option at Left Guard, they currently have on their team players drafted in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th rounds, plus an undrafted college FA they signed yesterday to compete for the starting LG spot. The Cowboys have drafted 5 Olinemen in the last 3 drafts, 6 in the last 4 drafts. They also landed RT Terence Steele as an undrafted player who became a full-time starter last year, and was playing above average as a right tackle, and was near elite in run blocking.
The Cowboys have already plucked 3 new starting Olinemen from the draft and college free agent ranks since 2020 - Tyler Smith, Tyler Biadasz, and Terence Steele. Biadasz made the Pro Bowl last year, Steele is an above average run blocking RT, and Tyler Smith surprised a lot of people with how well he played at LT last year. With the additional of Asim Richards in the 2023 draft, the Cowboys also have draft picks Josh Ball, Matt Farniok, and Matt Waletzdo from the last 2 drafts. They are obviously in the process of reloading their Oline, and have a plan to move on from future HOF OT Tyron Smith.
Fans and Pundits need to calm down about Oline, and get over their desire to find a Travis Kelce clone for the TE position. Schoonmaker, in combination with Ferguson from last year's draft, will be a more than adequate plan to replace Dalton Schultz (who wasn't exactly a Pro-Bowl player).
