like I said, another Dak thread in disguise. where is the confusion in that?

Boohoo? If you are thinking this is a thread that is expecting a bright future by moving on from Dak-then you can show me the optimism in my post. I’m pointing it out because you are concerned with why fans are expecting different results without him on the team. I never did-neither has anyone else in the thread.

This is you injecting your feelings on Dak, when I was not giving feelings. More posing questions about how the Jones’ might be thinking if they did not extend him and what they might be doing in the future. Figure it out.

Trance is a BUST. Cowboys aren't going anywhere with him but losing their way towards a top 5 pick in the draft. Let's be real now.
And you know that from a QB who has a total of 8 games played in 4 NFL seasons, missed the most part of 2 seasons due to injury, and didn't take a single snap for the entire 2023 season? You're not being the least bit fair towards the kid. I don't think he's the future of the franchise, and that's because he's showing signs that he is going to be on IR much more than he will be available to play. But it's not right to proclaim him a bust so prematurely. He will eventually prove or disprove his worth, but no one will ever know if he can't make it onto the field.

You didn’t answer the question, or are we to extrapolate that you wouldn’t support the starting QB

He very clearly will NOT support anyone other than Dak.

What is interesting is the thought that somehow fans would lose their minds if Dak does get extended. All it would mean is more status quo for a few more seasons-this last or previous season is the ceiling. Not like Cowboys’ fans are not used to it by now.
I don’t get it myself and as you see he will not answer the question. Some are happy with a few wins and going nowhere

For the Cowboys this year, he's a bonafied bench-warming BUST and a waste of a needed 4th round pick. This guy isn't going to stick around next year to continue being a backup, much less for pennies on the dollar. He's going to take off via free agency and try his luck starting elsewhere where he can get paid $25+ million per year for starters.

BUST Trance is not going to start this year, and he certainly won't be here next year. What's to support?

Hmmm, yeah that’s also confusing because they had the opportunity to grab some one year contracts with Tyron Smith and Jonathan Hankins at the very least for some relatively cheap veteran help/depth. If this was about proving it this year-I would have expected those one year contracts to happen. It seems more like they are just wanting to force the guys on their last year to play/coach their final contract year and then start future planning next season. I would say this is an intentional sabotage from my perspective (and if it is, they cannot admit it).
Why would you bring back players that played like crap against the Packers. The Cowboys were being nice about Tyron. They wanted him gone. I can agree with you that don’t think the team can win this season and that is why they are not players in free agency but the Cowboys have never really been playing in the free agent market.

The other thing is how so many think he will be starting after 5 more years-as though he compares favorably to Brady, Favre, Rodgers, Peyton, etc. This transition will happen either way some day sooner or later. Once that day comes everyone will have to move on-and so what?

I think we are getting to unfamiliar territory for the Jones’ in how to direct/plan for the team’s future. I think both wanted to see more playoff success this past season-not just because of stroking their egos but also because it would make marketing and future planning so much easier. If any season was set up for a deep playoff run (at least CCG)-it was this past one. Don’t have to face SF till that game. Plus, you could endlessly market the fact that you finally broke the 28 year drought even if SF destroyed the team yet again.

I think that GB game actually bummed Jerry out. I think he and Stephen see that the squad has plateaued with Dak, and last season was the best chance they will ever get to market him as a guy that can help advance Dallas in the postseason. That makes planning any future with Dak way more tenuous. It is extremely unlikely that Dak plays more than 5 seasons as a starter (and I think it likely that could plummet if he gets poor or just average offensive line play even for one season-which might happen this season).

I think both Jones’ are unsure with how to even approach a retool season without an apparent future QB to plan around. It has been awhile since they had to start over with a complete unknown (before Romo).

If what I say is true, we fans will not get any public acknowledgement from either Jones (because of the ensuing marketing disaster). They will speak in meaningless platitudes, but may not extend Dak before the season (all but assuring his last season with Dallas).
Finally they find themselves in a spot where perpetuating the lie is no longer possible, the fans and media won't tolerate it. That might be reason for optimism with some folks, not me though. The Jones' are incapable and/or unwilling to build a balanced team, it's fantasy football or bust with them and they ignore the plain truth before them. What do they do when they've got a QB that falls apart in the high stakes games? Well, they double down and put everything on his shoulders of course! Screw the OL, screw the running game, screw the defense that only plays well with a lead, put the whole damn thing on the QB that crumbles under pressure. Brilliant.

The Rams are the template.

Built it, went to the Super Bowl and lost, changed the QB and traded all their draft picks, won the Super Bowl, tore it down a bit, and now are surging again.

Compare that to here.

Pretty obvious. It’s a stealth tank job. Belicheck is coach in waiting.

I hope not. Dak isn't a Tom Brady - not even remotely close. No amount of rubbing and shining will ever turn a turd into a diamond.

The Packers loss coupled with the Texans swift ascension was finally the impetus to get Jerry rethinking things.

There has to be a new football man behind this new philosophy because it's totally unlike Jerry......2025 will reveal the man behind the curtain
so you thinking it is jimmy? BB? Zimmer?

It's a template for a franchise that wants to complete for super bowls. In Frisco, TX it's more important to sign an average QB to ridiculous contracts on the way to perpetual 1 and done.

I think Dak could be better with the BB and the right OC. Dak cant overcome bad coaching, most qb's cant.
Not saying he could get to a sb, but just be better than what he was last 3 years.
MM and his staff have been horrible last 3 years once in playoffs.

Is it fair to say that about MM when every HC in Dallas has failed since 1996?

I have no feelings about Dak. but you mentioned Dak multiple times in your post. like I said its a Dak thread in disguise.

my point is its not Dak issue. its a Jones issue, but I guess you have been following the cowboys for the past 5 or 6 years. so I am not surprised

I have no doubt that both Jerry and Stephen have a hard time figuring exactly what to do in the draft. That's where Will McClay comes in. That's not to say he's immune to being wrong but his opinion is infinitely better than anything our esteemed FO is likely to envision as a wise move. I'd surely be inclined to trust McClay to do whatever he thinks is best. Yes, he was instrumental in the team taking Mazi in the last draft, although, it remains to be seen if Mazi turns out to be far better with his weight back on course than he was last year at 30 lbs. lighter. Let's just hope for the best in 2024.
