I know it goes against prevailing chat room wisdom, but--other than early in the year and after Mack's surgery--the problems last season with the OL weren't really related to the OGs, anyway.

Moore'd be an upgrade. And he's got history with Callahan. He makes too much sense not to bring in, especially if Livings' contract restructure was never filed. We're still going to need to either restructure Free dramatically, or find a swing OT--at the very least--in the draft. The chances are very good we'll pick up an OL relatively early this year, no matter what.

I don't know how you could possibly say this. What was the problem then? Both guards at times were bad, especially Bernadeau. Free was awful at times as well. Smith and Cook were both average to above average

Agree.

Moore would be a very good short term solution but that's it. Dallas still needs to invest in the OL no matter what through the draft.

This. This. This. And...uhhh...THIS!!!!!

Huh? Cook was awful? I watched almost every game on the coaches film and I didn't get that sense at all. He RARELY gave up even a pressure. Was excellent in pass protection. Not great in getting good push in run game though

If we sign Moore, it's pretty much a given that Cook or Livings will be cut.

Cook was average in pass protection but absolutely horrific at run blocking, like you said. It all starts with having a physical and tough offensive line. Cook is a guy who belongs on the street as a FA, and someone you sign in mid-season if an injury occurs to an OL.

However, if they sign Moore, he will be a starter, so I wouldn't be surprised if Livings gets cut.

I agree that Moore is an upgrade over both and should be a starter. But to be honest Cook and Livings were a ton better then Bernadeau and Free. And if those 2 are still starting I'm going to be sick. Cook was better then average against the pass dude trust me. Watch the film. He often times was 1 on 1 with DT and barely moved back

I'm with you that Free and Bernadeau shouldn't be starters. If I had it my way, this would be my OL in 2013:

LT: Tyron Smith
LG: Jonathan Cooper
C: Phil Costa
RG: Brandon Moore
RT: Jeremy Parnell or a FA like Eric Winston

The longer FA goes on, the more Winston's price goes down. I'd love a training camp competition between Winston and Parnell.

Bernadeau is best suited as a backup, swing guy, while Free doesn't deserve a roster spot IMO.

You've got to replace Costa if you're ever going to have a quality OL.

There are several options in the draft. Justin Pugh is Mel's #1 ranked C right now. He'd walk in and beat out Costa in his sleep.

I'm not a big Costa fan, but I don't think it's realistic to replace 4 starters in one offseason on the OL. Let's see what happens when you actually surround the guy with LEGIT guards (Moore and Cooper), and not two scrubs like Livings and Bernadeau.

I think we'll have to live with a Costa/Bernadeau competition during camp.

Remember, Cooper can reportedly play center as well. We need Cooper!

To be honest, I think Costa is a better player then Bernadeau. And has more upside. Not that he is GREAT, but if its a competition between the two of them I fully expect Costa to beat out Bernadeau

Cook's value is that he can play decently basically 4 positions on the line. All except LT. That kind of utility is very hard to find. On game days he can replace two players on the active roster.

While I agree with this, I think that if we improve our Guards, the Berny becomes the interior back-up...he could back up any of the 3 interior positions, and better than Cook. This assumes that Costa wins the starting Center gig

Barring injury I would be shocked if Costa isn't starting at center. That being said I would like to see Bern there full time to see what he can do

Wouldn't say better then Cook, but younger with probably a higher ceiling

we could have just 2 O linemen on the active roster besides the starters. Someone that can play LT and Cook. Usually we have 3. That extra body can come in real handy. Actually in a pinch Cook could probably play LT acceptably for the rest of the game; have one other guy that can play C and G (Bernie) and we have reasonable insurance for the game. Of course it is always possible to lose 3 OL in a game but just how often has that happened anywhere ever?

Moore is a perfect fit for this team, it would allow them to go into the draft knowing they could draft a guard that won't neccessarily need to start next season.
Character wise he fits JG's "RKG" strategy and has a history with Callahan-a match made in football heaven.
I think Jerry will get this done.

The question with Moore is not would he help, but how much would he help?
They just added two semi-JAG guards last year who still have contracts going forward. If we take on another semi-JAG contract at the same position, it makes you wonder what the marginal return will be.
If we think it's more than just a small upgrade, go for it. It just always worries me that people overestimate what you don't have vs what you have....grass greener thing.
I suspect he is enough better to bring him in.
As long as we still draft a Guard.

Moore is hardly a JAG.

He would be a major upgrade. And yes, I would love to see us sign him and draft a guard early.

Cook along with being horrible in run blocking was having major problems with getting the snap off on time which was causing almost all of the false starts by the other guys. One of Bernadeau's biggest problem was coming off the snap late and that may have been due to not knowing if Cook was going to snap it.

That was the question....if he's more than slight upgrade, then it's worth it

There are many in the NFL that would say he's the next level up from JAG...or what I call semi-JAG.

I'm on board with getting him for several reasons--certainly being on board with Callahan is big.
