Ok, Brunell's refusal simply doesn't make sense UNLESS they are asking him to take less money overall or put more money at risk.

Presumably the Skins primary strategy is to reduce the 2006 cap hit.

They could do that by taking Brunell's salary, reducing it, and giving him the difference in a bonus now. That bonus is then spread over the remaining contract years whereas salary counts only against THAT year.

Brunell can't lose if he trades salary for bonus AS LONG as the bonus isn't deferred or contingent upon some other event. That MUST be what the Skins are asking otherwise Brunell would not refuse. His refusal is also supported by his already unamortized bonus which would hit their cap immediately if they cut him.

If the Skins really just want to lessen their cap hit they trade out the salary for bonus and accomplish that and Brunell would have ZERO reason to not agree. His refusal indicates they are doing something else to put his money at risk, IMO.

Quarterback Mark Brunell has agreed to terms on a restructured contract, the team announced on Wednesday.

Brunell was unhappy with a report in The Washington Post suggesting he was reluctant to restructure his contract.

The Commanders issued the following statement on Tuesday:

Washington Commanders quarterback Mark Brunell issued the following correction to a story published today in the Washington Post claiming Brunell had rebuffed the team's efforts at restructuring his contract and was "reluctant" to do so.

The Commanders will LOSE cap room if they cut Brunell. Steinberg probably figures that if the Skins cut Brunell out of spite, he can go to another team desperate for a short-term quarterback solution. He played well enough last season (before getting hurt) to get a contract from someone.
They will lose cap room only because his accelerated bonuses will be greater than this years' bonuses+salary, right? Brunell would fit somewhere like Miami where they could sign him and draft a guy like Croyle or Whitehurst. I guess I got confused in my last two posts...

According to PFT, it appears that Portis has also restructured based on contract language that authorized the skins to do so. They are also saying over at extremskins that it is being reported that several other core players are beginning to restructure. It appears that it might have been part of danny boy's plan all along by writing language in the player's contracts that would allow them to restructure when they deemed fit.

This may be true, but its not good news for Washington. They are still going to have cut a number of players. And by "restructuring" they are only pushing the crunch back into the future.

Eventually, they will have to pay the piper.

No. You will be cutting players this year. But instead of being smart and taking one big hit this year and starting fresh, you are going to have the worst of both worlds:

You will be cutting players this year and unable to be a player in free agency AND you will be pushing other money backwards to put you right back in the same position as you were last time.

As far as relying on an uncapped year, that is sheer asinity. What? Do you think that there is an uncapped year every 4 years? Do you think it is a regular occurrence that can be relied upon?

The money being pushed back isn't going to be pushed back too far. Brunell's money can't be pushed off until 2030... his contrat is only for a few more seasons. Same with Portis.

Basically, the Commanders screwed up. But instead of admitting the mistake and taking a one time hit to resolve it, they are doing the worst of both things. They get screwed now and they will get screwed later when the restructured contracts put them right back where they are now.

It's a shame that the Skins are so horrible that Snider had to try to buy every expensive free agent in the sheer hopes that they could compete by buying players. Had they not been so poorly managed and owned, they could have developed a winning team without having to put themselves in this position.

cobra, they do this every year. the only reason its being discussed at length is because of the lack of a CBA- otherwise, they'd get it done like they always do. hard to say they 'screwed up' because owners and players can't get an agreement in place.

i'm not even sure where to go with this. SNYDER went on a spending spree 5 or 6 years ago. since then, he has made a lot of very good moves. getting rid of injured coles for moss, bringing gibbs back, letting pierce and smoot walk, getting rid of bailey for portis.....3 of these moves were all seen as horrible by the media at the time they happened.

the skins have plenty of very good, expensive players that they have 'developed'- samuels, jansen, and arrington among them and they have restructured their deals in the past. champ bailey, smoot and pierce are a couple more players the skins have developed. they left recently for huge contracts- it didnt hurt the D.

bledsoe and keyshawn may be your 2 best offensive players (and not that good, at that). where did they come from? pot, meet kettle.

Damn freakin Skins, just chap my *** they do. Man, I dunno, maybe we are the fools and Snyders the genuis. When we faced it, we took it like a man and lost for 10 years. I am so tired of Snyder escaping the executioners axe. When will there be justice? When will the world be right again? Why the hell did we go through all that losing when we coulda just kept pushing it back, still owing Deion Sanders 17 million bucks, no worries, we will give it to your great grandson on his 18th birthday.

There will be justice within the next few years when the first wave of retirements comes (Arrington, Samuels, others). They keep getting away with it because they haven't been doing it that long.

Your statement would have some credence if the skins actually produced winning teams during all those years they have been circumventing cap hell. They have only had 2 playoff appearances in the past 13 years, and only one that snyder played a role in.

snyders only owned the team since 99. 13 years isnt a fair number to use in this subject.

the problem in DC has been the coaching, not the owner.
