TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Buccaneers running back Lionel Gates was arrested and charged with hitting a pregnant woman in the face and pushing her into a wall during an argument.
The 25-year-old player was being held Friday with no bond, jail records said.Gates kicked in the front door of Peggie Lavender's apartment Thursday night, destroyed two televisions and two doors, put a hole in the bedroom wall and assaulted her, a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office report said. He was arrested later at his apartment in the same complex.
Gates was charged with burglary of a dwelling, aggravated battery of a pregnant woman and criminal mischief. A call to his lawyer, Ken Sarnoff, was not immediately returned.
"Charges such as those facing Lionel Gates are taken seriously by the Buccaneers organization," the team said in a statement Friday. "We plan to meet with Lionel as soon as possible after which we will deal with this matter appropriately."
Gates was signed by Tampa Bay in September after being released by Buffalo. He played at Louisville and was drafted by the Bills in 2005.

Pretty disgusting. I think the NFL's going to act pretty fast in punishing players for stuff like this. The NFL is really concerned with their image, and I don't think this is going to help. Hopefully, some new rules can come from this and all the other bad situations of the offseason.

I say that the law and the NFL should stay out of this. In this particular case, we need a few things to nip this in the butt. Here's the laundry list:

1. sledgehammer
2. handcuffs
3. rope
4. knife
5. Larry Allen

Mr. Allen should pay Mr. Gates a visit at his home. After putting the handcuffs on Gates, Larry should tie a noose with the rope, slip it around Gates' neck, and attached the other end of the rope (tightly) to a ceiling fan, etc.

Larry should then step in front of Gates, cock his arm as far back as possible, and hit him square in the mouth. While Gates is unconscious, Larry should cut him down with the knife, bench press him over his head, and body slam him against the nearest brick wall.

Leaving Gates crumpled like a wet sack against the wall, Larry should take the sledgehammer and trash Gates' entire home.

After Gates awakens from his two-day coma and is informed of why he's laying in an intensive care unit bed, I sorta feel that he will have learned a valuable lesson.

Mission accomplished.

When it comes to cases like this, I tend to adhere to the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing. There are two sides to every story and I can't picture a scenario where an NFL player goes knocking down a door just to beat up a pregnant woman and break her televisions.

Maybe the guy really is crazy......but there are alot of crazy women out there too.

Unless a woman is armed with a weapon (knife, gun, bat, etc.) and is trying to inflict bodily harm to a man, there is no (zero) justification in a man striking a woman, but that's just me.

Are you referring to a case where a woman is walking down the street, police roll up behind her and start tasering her for the heck of it? Or are you referring to police officers trying to subdue a woman who's resisting an arrest? Or what exactly?
