Let's not let this thread be about what a jerk Buddy Ryan was. Although, he'd probably appreciate Cowboy fans feeling that way and saying so at his passing. Personally, I could never stand the guy and have very little nice to say about him, but I think we can acknowledge that and move on here. He definitely was a real NFL character by any standard. Ask Kevin Gilbride.

Seriously guys. This is not a thread where we're going to debate Buddy Ryan's character. Acknowledging it in a respectful post is ok. Stating that you think acknowledging it at this time is not appropriate is also ok. But let's leave it at that and move on and not let the topic devolve into a debate of a different sort.

Sorry I'm being honest. I freely admit he was one of the best DC if not the best. As a person, Ryan earned his reputation and never shied away from it. it is what it is.

No he wasn't . No playoff wins and a .500 record isn't good.

Bingo.

He was a great defensive coordinator. He was highly overrated as a head coach. He only focused on one side of the ball and was only interested in one side of the ball. His teams were incomplete and often undisciplined.
IMO, his teams would have never gotten to the Super Bowl no matter how long he coached. I think his sons are the same. I don't think Rex will get any of his teams to the Super Bowl because he lacks that "something" that instills discipline in his teams.

Having said that, I'm sorry that he has passed.

Buddy Ryan
Pat Summit
Muhammad Ali

The trio of deaths strikes again. :(

No need to apologize for being honest. Let's just not let the discussion in this particular thread be dominated by your opinion of the guys character. I happen to agree with you.

Buddy Ryan made the Rival greater. Love/Hate relationship while he was Coaching, after he retired there were no hard feelings about a game men play.

Now it's all about respecting the man and his family. He was a gift to all of us.

Ryan was truly one of a kind. Not just in Football but in the way he was as a person as well. Some might say that they were one in the same, that he was all Football, and that would be hard to argue against. He took three different Defenses to the Super Bowl with his 46 and was one of the really great Defensive Coordinators in the History of the NFL.

Forgive my ignorance, I know the Bears but who were the other two defenses he took to the Super Bowl?

The best thing I can say about Buddy is that I hated Dallas having to play against his defenses. Not that they were that good, but because they played dirty and tried to intentionally hurt players. Who could forget "bounty gate"? I liked to see the Cowboys beat the Eagles because Ryan hated the Cowboys and Jimmy so much. Those were some sweet victories. I don't have anything good to say about Buddy Ryan. Knowing him, he had them bury him face down so everyone could kiss his..... you know the rest. That being said, I wish his loved ones peace.....

And that is how you feel I think how a person lived tells you about that person and when you die that does not change the action of the person. Dictators are not good but if all of a sudden when they die they are quality people? No they are not. While I do not compare a football coach to a mass killer I do equate a persons actions when they are alive tells you about the person and his demise does not alter the facts. I do think it is hypocritical that people can slam and call people are sorts of names but as soon as they die it is Oh he was a great guy. If you felt that you would have said it when he was alive.

I do funerals for a living, and I will tell you one thing.....I've seen some horrible people have a great funeral with family and friends spinning a positive light on a horrible person. But if you listen to them before and after the funeral, they do mention the bad things.

Their legacy is still there, but for that brief moment of the funeral, none of that is mentioned. At a mass murders funeral, noone stands up to say how horrible he was. Just the way it is, and that is what is meant by some of the comments here. Since we aren't in a funeral, this is the internet, we can stay what we please. But I'm sure noone would say negative things to his sons aboout him right now.

I still remember him leaving the field early when we smashed the Cardinals in Tempe in the '95 season finale. That was SWEET.

Was also the game in which Emmitt broke the single-season TD record, and we won Super Bowl XXX in that same stadium a month later.

Oh yeah, RIP Buddy.

Great coach.

And that is all I have to say about Buddy Ryan on the day that he died.

As I have mentioned I did not wish bad on him outside of losing but now that he has passed, outside of saying he was one of the best if not the best DC to walk an NFL sidelines I had little respect for him as a human. I think anyone who would pay off players to injure others is a jerk, I would say worse than Jerk but the sight has rule.

The Jimmy Johnson "We are East Carolina" press conference comes to mind. He also ran up the score with a last second touchdown against Tom Landry. I have nothing for him.

Condolences to his family and friends. Ryan was a bitter rival; but I prefer to separate "real life" from sports as much as I can. The man has passed away, so I refuse to say anything bad about him.
