Ryan contributed to three different teams that went to Super Bowls, and two champions - he developed good DEs with the Jets in Gerry Philbin and Verlon Biggs, enhanced the abilities of the Purple People Eaters, and developed the most overwhelming, dominant and intimidating defense that I can recall watching - the 1985 Bears.

Yes, he was divisive. Yes, he lacked class. Yes, he was not a successful head coach. But, he was an amazing defensive mind who had an impact everywhere he went. RIP to a great defensive mind.

Forgive my ignorance, I know the Bears but who were the other two defenses he took to the Super Bowl?

He was the defensive line coach for Super Bowl appearances by the Jets and Vikings before being coordinator for the Bears.

I will say this, I truly believe the Cowboys would be a better team if they were still having to play against a Buddy Ryan defense. No one galvanized the Cowboys like Ryan...no one. No one created more desire to win against them than Ryan did. If you hated losing, you hated losing to a Ryan coached defense even more. If you hated getting embarrassed, you hated getting embarrassed by someone who wanted to embarrass you even more. The Cowboys were a better team because of Ryan.

My sincere condolences to his friends and family.

I wish I could improve on this. You forgot to mention he was colorful, and said what he felt, and wasnt politically correct. Something I admire in this day and age of sterile, carefully prepared coach speak.

But there is also no reason to trample a mans grave. Everybody knows Buddy Ryan. He is gone and what's said and written now are for the ones left behind.

Well he isn't actually buried yet, since he just passed today....the grave has yet to be dug, much less trampled upon.

Btw, i couldn't stand him. The bounty bowl showed how classless he was....even trying to take out his own former kicker who was just playing for him that very season.

I may have not liked him or his sons, but i am glad he is dead. Now he is at peace, no more suffering, illness, or pain. Now his family can mourn, as well as celebrate his life, but at the same time let go of their worries and concerns for his well being.

You reap what you sow, Buddy was who he was he never apologized for it. His skills as a DC were great but he was what he was. A jerk to a lot of people. His players loved him no doubt but his actions at many times were just wrong.

That can be said for a lot of people in this world. Maybe even me, but I'm not going to admonish a person in that manner, once that person has passed. If you want to do that, do it when they are alive. Once they pass, it's those who are left behind that have to read it or listen to it or deal with the words. I don't wish that on anybodies family in this situation and I certainly wouldn't want my own family to have to deal with it in such a time.

It aint about Buddy anymore. He's done with this world and now, it's left to those left behind. I don't see how saying cruel things about a person after they are gone helps the situation.

There is truth and then there is truth.

The best thing I can say about Buddy is that I hated Dallas having to play against his defenses. Not that they were that good, but because they played dirty and tried to intentionally hurt players. Who could forget "bounty gate"? I liked to see the Cowboys beat the Eagles because Ryan hated the Cowboys and Jimmy so much. Those were some sweet victories. I don't have anything good to say about Buddy Ryan. Knowing him, he had them bury him face down so everyone could kiss his..... you know the rest. That being said, I wish his loved ones peace.....

Bounty Bowl...............

My comments are not to his family, I'm sorry for their loss. I have said Buddy was the best DC I have ever seen, guys who played for him loved him. However anytime a coach puts a bounty on players, paying guys to intentionally injury others putting their career at risk then I will call that person out dead or alive. He made his choices in life to do these type of things that is on him. me calling it for what it is, is just being honest. I am not one of these people who all of a sudden praises a person just because they passed. You make your reputation in life and it follows you. You are not all of a sudden elevated to good because you did what all of us will do which is die.

We leave our mark on this world by our actions and deeds for good and bad

I know they are not. Heck, nobody who is saying they didn't like him is necessarily posting to his family. I know that too but who else is going to read them now? I am not saying praise him for things he was not. I'm saying that I see no need to point out things that are probably better left unsaid. What you say about reputation is correct. What we say about those who have passed is saying something about us. We don't need to be small about it. You can say things in a way that are not disrespectful of the family or the situation without lying. We don't need to point out the mans shortcomings. We all knew him. This is no longer about him.

I'll tell you something else. I know damn well you are better then that Dooms. That's all I'm saying.

I wish bad on no one however on the other hand my views on a person do not change. I give him credit where it was due but my overall view of him does not change.

When Bum Phillips was coaching the Oilers a team I hated (still hate the Texans) being a Cowboys fan in Houston will do that to you. When Bum passed away I praised him as a coach but more importantly as a man and how he conducted himself on and off the field. he taught his guys to play hard and with passion but also as professionals.

When it comes to Buddy I give him credit as a great DC but as a person I did not think highly of him. If Buddy was alive and heard myself or any other fan of football say that he would likely laugh and go tell me to pound sand. I can only give you my honest feelings I can't hide them or cover them up for the sake of some kind of protocol that says you are not allowed to say negatives about a person who has passed.
