Mixed emotions with Buddy.
I liked a lot of things about him as a person and as a coach. He had a good sense of humor and he cared about his players. But putting a bounty on a placekicker is reprehensible, the way he acted with the Oilers was despicable and he was a horrendous coach when it came to the offensive side of the ball and he never won a playoff game because of it.
It's probably best to look at him purely from a defensive coaching standpoint. I found it interesting he played the O-Line. He came up with an aggressive, blitzing style defense based on his discussions with YA Tittle. Tittle told him that if he had enough time he could always find a receiver, but when he didn't have enough time he could be no better than average.
Buddy was really the founding father of the modern day, heavy blitzing defense. I also liked how he focused his attack on the center and the A-Gap. He eschewed 3-man fronts. He was also a keen scout of talent and great at developing talent. Most good defensive coordinators tend to excel with certain positions on defense, like Wade Phillips (a buddy disciple) with NT's and OLB's or Belichick (Safeties and MIKE) and Marvin Lewis (D-Line and LB's), but they tend to be a bit weak in other areas (Wade with safeties, Belichick with NT and CB and Lewis with safeties). But Buddy's defense's were strong all over. He knew what he was looking for in a player and knew exactly how to develop it regardless of the position.
One of my favorite Ryan quotes was that he was always looking for ''tough and smart players.' Why? Because soft and stupid always gets you beat.
And that's what exemplified Ryan's defenses. Tough, physical and smart players. The D-Line were terrors. No dancing, just get straight up field, sustain your gaps, set the edge and be able to stunt and drop back when ordered to. The linebackers were tackling machines, never afraid to take on blockers and could cover and blitz. The corners were physical and had excellent technique. The safeties were hard hitting and smart enough to disguise coverages and blitzes.
The Cowboys could learn a thing or two from Buddy, but they can do it with some class.
