I think that, for most Cowboys fans, we say a lot of things when we are disappointed or disgusted with results. Many say they are done with the Cowboys and that typically lasts for about a week.
No Cowboy fan ever "gives up" on a season. They may say it but, deep down, they are looking at scenarios, no matter how unlikely, where the Cowboys can pull it out. They do it during every loss and they do it for the entire season.
The Cowboys might be down by three TD's with 5 minutes left and there is still a part of us that imagines a quick TD followed by a turnover, followed by another score, followed by a successful onside kick.......I don't think we can help it. Fans use different coping mechanisms, blame somebody, accuse refs, or just announce they are done with it.
The same is true for a season. We can still make the playoffs if........
It seemed highly unlikely earlier in the season, that the Cowboys could win the division but if anyone thinks this is the most unlikely scenario in which the Cowboys could prevail, then think again.
As I have discussed in earlier threads, the "miracle" season was 1970 when the Cowboys were in 3rd place in their division with five games left at a time when there was only one wildcard team in each conference and only three divisions in each conference.
Therefore, the Cowboys were not even in contention for the wildcard with five games left. In order to win the division they would have to win out the last five games and hope the other two teams faltered
That's exactly what happened.
That's how a 5-4 team that had lost earlier in the season 54-17 and 38-0 ended up playing in their first Super Bowl.
A lot of things can happen in the NFL and you have to wait until the very end before you can get the whole story.
