I'm actually a little bummed to see this.
I think Watkins was a great 5th IDL to carry.
Once we brought him in last year, and we had Hankins manning 1 tech, I saw a lot more from Watkins.
I think before we were trying to use him at the 1 and he just wasn't quite big enough, but once he started playing more 3 he flashed a lot more. I think a guy like that is a great 5th guy to carry inside, he can play either position.
I was hoping we'd have Hankins and maybe a FA at 1, Osa and an upgrade from the draft at 3, then Watkins as our DT rotaion.
I think it was a mistake to lose him. Not the end of the world, but a small mistake nonetheless.

Hankins isn't a three-down guy and depth matters. Watkins' spot will need to be filled, probably in the draft.

Im of the mindset that drafting a NT and a 3T would be wise. Getting one of each means that our ability to stop the run and keep QBs from stepping up would be vastly improved.

I agree. He was at his best late in the year. This might hurt us. if AShawn is available, GET HIM. We have a need suddenly.

Would be the next biggest need but they could always shift Tyler over to play it if they had to. DT has no such option. You have a good backup in Osa, an aging Hankins who is still decent and nothing else.

Hankins may not last 17+ games and watkins wasnt anything special. They need another run stopping DT. While id love a guy who can get pressure up the middke they are rare but theyd still need a guy who can power into double teams, get off blocks and still make some tackles.

Not really. NT Hankins and 3-tech Odighizuwa are the starters and Golston and Gallimore are contributors. We also have Bohanna as the backup NT, but don't think we're too thrilled about that, so we'll take another NT stab late in the draft.

Yes, I agree.
If we go into the season with Osa/Hankins/Bohanna/Gallimore/Golston we failed in the off season.
To me, Hankins is a part of the solution at the 1 tech. Solid contributor/role player. But Bohanna is barely an NFL player IMO. Maybe he improves in his 3rd season, but we need another guy, either in FA or the draft, who gives us another proven NFL body at the 1. Bohanna could certainly compete for snaps too, but I want another guy there.
At 3, Osa is a proven player IMO. Gallimore is barely an NFL player IMO. Golston is interesting, he has shown things at times (and he is cheap, which Gallimore is no longer)
My hope in the off season was keep Hankins and Watkins, Osa/Golston/Bohanna are all cheap, then add a 1 tech and a 3 tech in either the draft or FA. Cut Gallimore and save his 3 million. That money could pay for Hankins, Watkins and a draft pick. Go into camp with 7 guys competing for 5 slots. (Hankins/FA signing/Bohanna as your 1's, and Osa/Golston/Watkins/Draft pick at the 3). Keep 5 on the 53 and the other 2 on IR/PS for depth.
We can still get there, minus Watkins of course.
I liked Watkins, but his loss is not catastrophic. He was a just a guy and can be replaced.
I saw his contract was 1 year 1.75 mil. We may have felt that was too high for a 5th IDL.
We have the draft soon, and there are still guys unsigned now, and will be more after the draft, so let's see how this position developes
