Random story, I saw Doug Free walking around Winstar Casino in OK a few years ago. I think I was probably the only one to recognize him I just said hey and good luck on the season. It seemed like he didn't necessarily want to be there like he was dragged by his wife/family haha.

Sign Free and Murray and use the rest of FA and the draft to rebuild the defense THIS year.

Yes, this is a better strategy because we want to overpay a running back who may or may not be able to stay healthy and was only able to produce what he did behind this line.

And to re-sign an aging offensive linemen who isn't great in the first place, who is now starting to break down due to injuries...

And then draft a bunch of defensive players of which we have no idea how long it will take for them to develop if ever...

Well you have a point albeit a pithy one. I agree not to overpay a RB who has basically been healthy one year. But it is a gamble not to have Murray. I'm not afraid to have Randle and Williams as the rotating backs and Dunbar as the 3rd down back. I'd prefer to dump Clutts and get a big RB to rotate as well as play FB.

First, I did not say to over pay for Murray. Signing Free buys us a couple of years. We have to start investing in the defense. DLaw and Hitch were good starts.

Right tackle can be a pretty thankless job at times. I remember one costing us a win in DC a few years back clearly holding on the last play of the game (Alex Barron?).
When I think about Doug Free, I remember when Columbo went down, I thought we were done. It didn't take long for me to realize that we were going to be ok. I vaguely recall him being 50'ish yards downfield on a screen pass to Felix Jones against our much hated rivals, the eagles. What he may lack in ability, he makes up for in heart. He gave us a home team discount when he became a free agent, took a pay cut when he didn't perform up to expectations, and has been a great asset to our team. For the first time in years, a cowboys RB claimed the rushing title, and part of that was due to his work.
For that, I thank you, Mr Free. Wish you the best wherever you land.

I still expect a deal to get done. He's the leader on that oline. He will want to get a deal done. And as we have seen over the past several seasons, he's the best RT we have.

It may be time for a new leader to emerge, most likely T Fred. Get one more big, young, mean, stud O lineman (RT), and we're set for a long time.

There is a time and way to invest in the defense.

The idea that we should go into the draft with holes on this defensive line will ensure that coming out of the draft we have holes and question marks on this defensive line..

That isn't the right answer.

The right answer is to bring in free agents who can man the spots we need to upgrade, and manage their costs by reducing costs elsewhere.

We can draft more defensive linemen when we aren't doing it based on strict need. That's a recipe for reaching.

Also to re-sign Murray may very much mean to over pay for him.

Free could break down next year for all we know, he doesn't buy us time.

The injured foot may mean he'll sign a cheaper deal early in free agency or he'll wait until later in free agency when he's completely healed to sign. Either way, it might lead to a discounted signing.

I did not in any way suggest we go into the draft with holes in the DL. I'm on record since forever saying we need to sign at least 2 DL FA's maybe 3 and draft that many also.

That's way too many resources into the defensive line at once while also signing Free and Murray.

That just doesn't make sense...

Makes perfect sense. It is by far the weakest position on the team. We have a bunch of JAG's and all those roster spots need upgraded.

To the other OL members, he is the old man, the glue, the leader.

I'm not sure the team wants to lose that.

That's the narrative that's developed because he's old. Smith and Fred are more than ready to take over a leadership position. I mean we just inked Tyron for a decade. Let's hope so.

I am really getting a bad feeling about the Cowboys.Realizing we had something special last year and I am seeing the old penny penching Jerry appear while all of these guys walk.I will not be reordering my season tickets, he is making some bad decisions.Unless we haev way more picks than I know about we now need a right takle, a back up qb, a running back, oh yeah and a lot of defensive lineman and a corner back. We're going to get all of those in one draft, yea right.

Really depends on his medical status.

If the recent clean-up of his ankle/foot showed progressive cartilage loss, he won't be resigned.
