Not really. His play spoke louder than any scouting report. In 556 snaps, he didn't allow a sack or have a false start/holding penalty. That's playing in the SEC.

His problem has been injuries.

Yet he didnt start every game, shared snaps and had injury problems. AND most scouting reports had him ranked lower than round 3. So if his play spoke louder, then why did most people scout him lower than round 3? Unless you are implying that the Cowboys knew something everyone else didnt. Which I guess there is that possibility. But then again, he got hurt again didnt he? Cowboys seem willing to take a chance on guys with injury histories that have the talent. I can say without much reservation that this hasnt worked out for them.

I'm not surprised. Let's see, he played a position of need, doesn't allow sacks, doesn't get penalities, our coaches talked to his coaches because they knew them for insider info and the Cowboys thought he fit into their system.

Yah, I would have taken the back. And like I said, with Collins being signed after the draft, we got the lineman we needed. Oh yah, and he is hurt AGAIN already.

Like always, you seem like a guy that lashes out at when ANYONE says ANYTHING negative about ANYTHING Cowboy. Do you like EVERYTHING they do?

Just curious. Is there ONE thing Cowboy you dont approve of?

So who do you take to the game ? Normally you take 7 OL players to the game. first 5 are set (Smith, Leary, Fred, Martin, Free).

Bernadeau as your primary center & guard backup and collins as your swing tackle backup ? Thats 7 spots.

But that means Collins cant win the LG competition because else (if Weems gets cut) you dont have a Tackle backup in the game (Leary cant play tackle).

Of course these are not essenial problems but its worth to think about our situation at backup Tackle and not putting it like its no problem at all.

I dont think Weems is getting cut. I believe in the last few practices, Collins is playing some right guard where Martin plays. So that tells me that they are thinking of the possibility of putting Martin over there at Tackle. Weems hasnt played ball in like 2 years so he is going to be rusty. But they seem high on him.

From NFL.COM

STRENGTHS
Plays with good footwork and overall pass-protection technique on his initial pass sets. Hand placement is adequate. Plays with open eyes and desired football intelligence. Has a feel for stunts, twists and blitzes and can pick them up. Good initial quickness to get to tough reach blocks and climbs smoothly to second-level blocks. Played left and right tackle at Florida. Might have the athleticism and functional strength to play all five O-line positions.
WEAKNESSES
Poor base blocker in the run game. Doesn't get the hip rotation needed after initial engagement and plays with lean over drive, despite some power in his legs. Stops his feet and loses defender against counter moves on pass rushes. Could use more time in weight room for added upper-body strength. Needs to carry hands higher in pass-pro setup. Missing a jarring punch to keep pass rusher from caving the edge. Scouts question functional strength to redirect defenders around edge or on inside moves.
DRAFT PROJECTION
Round 5 or 6
NFL COMPARISON
Tanner Hawkinson
BOTTOM LINE
Athletic, heady player with potential position versatility. His foot quickness and movement skill will appeal to zone-scheme teams but he must improve his strength and ability in pass protection to be considered a full time tackle. Could end up transitioning into a full-time center role.
-Lance Zierlein

It looks like to me the Cowboys really liked what he had to offer as a potential future replacement to Free. Not with the expectation of starting right away, but that he had the athleticism to fit in our scheme and provided position flex. What might have been a 5th or 6th round draft pick for a power running team could easily be a 3rd or 4th round draft pick for a zone blocking team. And where was he picked 91st overall. So if the Cowboys reached for him, they probably didn't reach all that much. I think it would be fair to say had we gotten him in the 5th round instead of the 3rd, people would be a lot happier with this move, but if you look at our entire draft, who would you rather we not have drafted Ryan Russell? I think guys like him are going to be what puts our team over the top in 2 to 3 years in terms of depth.

Drafting Green early was a luxury/need, and they filled it. Not much else you can say about it. We don't need him to start right now, and when healthy he can hopefully turn into a player for us.

I don't think they will change from the starting lineup of last season. Right now getting guys work at other spots helps in case they have to contend with injuries but come opening day I think the starting OL will remain in place.

I think they could have traded up. Were gonna have a bunch of mid round picks next year. Its nice to have a lot but could have been used to trade up to get who they wanted at runningback.

I think they had what they wanted at RB before the draft
Had someone fell to them where he was bpa they would have taken him. But it pretty obvious they did not see RB at a spot to reach for and get away from their board

I would add just as Larry Allen did not start his rookie season he became a starter during his rookie season. The more guys like Collins continues to work and develop the better chance they have to overtake a starter even if it is mid season.

To me this was a very puzzling pick. The guy didnt even start some games for his team. He shared time. And he has an injury history. Most were surprised he went in the 3rd round. And after signing Collins after the draft, I am sure this is the pick they want back. Would have been a great spot to draft a back there.

I do not think so. Free seems to be hurt a lot recently, if Chaz can start next year, and when Leary leaves after this year for a big contract, Collins should be the LG next year. 2 cheap options.

Weems still has a chance to be OK. People are greatly underestimating how much of an impact not playing in a game for two years can have. He was bad, but Parnell struggled like that at times too.

This.

Despite his apparent limitations (to us anyway) Weems is the best prospect to go into the season as the backup tackle. Whatever the plans the Cowboys have if either tackle goes down, we are not privy to them.

I don't know where I heard this but it sounded like the Cowboys are confident that Weems could be a solid RT but they are unsure how he can do on the left.

This is probably why they are letting Tyron sit a week and giving Weems the 1st team reps and preseason game this week.

God, I love when people pull out the anecdotes to make a point.

Of course the clear fact here is that the sort of work Collins needs won't come in practices during the season. OL guys need snaps to develop. Plain and simple.

Right. Leary, an RFA is going to get a bug deal. We'll obviously put the highest tender on him. No one is grabbing him for a big deal plus a first rounder

Sounds like a reasonable plan. If he (Weems) is their best option; it makes sense to give him the most work.
