That isn't heroic, it is a great move, classy and good for his image after what he did to help ruin his image a few years ago but it is not heroic.

Christian Bale would probably be the first to say he is not a hero.

As “The Dark Knight Rises” comes to its climactic ending, Batman give his friend and crime-fighting partner, James Gordon, a very simple example of what defines a hero. As it turns out, wearing a cape and cowl has little to do with it. (SPOILERS AHEAD)

“A hero can be anyone, even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulders to let him know the world hadn’t ended.”

On Tuesday, July 24, the man who’s spent the better part of the last decade behind that cowl, Christian Bale, became a real-life hero by doing something as simple and reassuring as visiting Aurora, Colorado to let the victims of last week’s tragic shooting know they were in his thoughts and would not be forgotten. With no fanfare and on his own accord, Christian Bale spent the afternoon in Aurora visiting, posing for pictures with, and lifting the spirits of the wounded. He later paid his respects at a memorial that has been created to observe the fallen.

Cynicism holds no place at this table, as Bale’s actions were completely sincere. He sought no recognition or publicity and any he’s received, including this article, is purely incidental. He was not acting on behalf of Batman, yet his selflessness and genuine humanity form an even greater representation of heroism than anything his character ever did onscreen. As a fan of both the actor and The Dark Knight he played, I’ve never seen a more moving act of generosity.

While he was representing only himself, Christian Bale embodied the qualities that make me proud to call myself a Batman fan.
