Church To Sign With Jacksonville

With this draft, I'm taking a safety in the top 3 rounds anyway.

Between a draft pick and Frazier, Church is a mediocre progress stopper. It was time to move on anyway.

I chide the Cowboys over their wait and see approach but here, I think they might be able to get a guy like Cyprien or Swearinger in week or so at a pretty decent cost. I don't think either of those guys are much worse than Church.

Although it's probably a red flag that the Jags would sign Church and let Cyprien walk.

Not rueing this one but don't bank on the draft to fill 3/4 of our defense. At least, our secondary knows the system but it will suck to get worse FA's to fill out the roster :(

Any word on Mo and Carr today?
With this team refusing to play the FA game, and unable/unwilling to re-sign their own.... It's going to be tough not to take a step back without another stellar draft or huge improvements from within.

Keep in mind that contracts will be looking overpaid due to the increased cap. Not that we needed to keep Church, but that's not a bad payout on their part

Oh, I agree, brother. No way do we pay Church that.

Syd, I'm more concerned about the holes created than the actual players leaving (for the most part, I'd like to keep Wilcox and TMac -- but I saw what you posted on him, so we diverge a bit there, too). We have a thin D, it's gonna have to be a very productive offseason.

To be honest, I think they're playing conservative now that it looks like we have our QB of the future. Meaning, now is a pretty good time to clear cap and avoid unnecessary salaries.

I also don't think this is a "must win it all" year. With Romo gone we'll be like 60 mill under the cap next year depending on what we do this offseason.

Fans want to win it all now, but with all the young guys on the DL, Jaylon, a deep draft class this year. I think they're going to roll with a lot of young guys this year to see what they have, especially since the DE market was pretty weak this year.

Just my opinion anyway.

Not really a red flag, I wanted Cyprien last year. Getting him this year on the cheap makes me happy. Lets not forget, Bortles hung that defense out to dry all year long. Cyprien was on the field most of last year. It was hard to watch.

My problem is we could get in a situation where we are filling holes with a bunch of nobodys from practice squads or something. Lose Church, McClain, Romo, and probably at least TWill. None of them are superstars, but what will we replace them with.

So far every replacement we have is a downgrade. And who knows what happens with Mo and Church.

As long as the brass sees the rebuild defense-oriented for the next 2-3 years, I'm good with that, too, G. It's just that, after going 13-3, I realllllly want to compete. And our fatal flaw is D

Scouts? Which ones?

For example, I saw Greg Cosell do an analysis of the FA safeties and Church was 7th on his list. Granted Berry was #1 and he's now off the market.
I can't believe he is ranked 7th on Cosell's list?

I'm not upset at losing Church, but how did the Jags offer a contract before free agency has started?

Yup. We're getting trashed with these team's with a **** load of cap space.

We're gonna have some shoring up to do on an already thin D.

And to those of you with the derp'y "good he sucks, anyways" responses, y'all better hope McClay and Vital have been scouting the hell out of the lower-tier FA market (not directed at you, Stash)

I'm in the middle between "he sucks" and $6 million a year.

We can't lose Mo. Not now. I know he isn't popular with some, but you're right, Freeze -- we can't fill all these holes in one offseason.

Not to mention, I really, really like Mo :)

I like him, but with so many holes now, I don't think we can afford to spend another 1st rounder on a safety.

Someone needs to be talking to Wilcox, Mo, and Carr though. Can't fill that many holes in one draft, and I hope the FO doesn't think they are the Pats cause they aren't. We need players.

Called this months ago....Nobody is gonna be left in the seconday after free agency. We are gonna be forced to take a DB just to tread water. Let's just hope a decent safety is left. Heck I'd take a ......

SS- Obi Melifonwu SS Connecticut/Cyprien
FS-Jones/Heath/Frazier

.....over what we trotted out last year.

I still think we go CB round 2 as well. My guy Fabian Moreau CB UCLA ...hope he didn't perform too well @ the combine.;)

I hear that and everything I have read said Cyprien actually had a pretty good season in 2016.

But then why would Jax sign an older S in Church and let Cyprien walk? Unless Cyprien is going to command even more than Church in FA?

I don't mind losing Church, either, but if we are thinking of simply sliding in Heath there, then I got a problem.
Replacing all these guys with UDFA's is not the answer.

Im trying to figure that out too. Maybe they wanted a vet back there? Who knows, this is the Jags we are talking about.

Good for him, he was a solid player for us who worked hard for this pay day.
The epitome of a Cowboys defensive player. Solid. Never makes a play when it matters. Limited. Loved by all. Coaches are comfortablewith him.

I'm just glad we're not paying 6M for that skill set.

I believe he had Berry, Jeferson, Cyrpien, Swearinger, McDonald and Harmon over him. He really picked apart Church in the passing game and pointed out he's older than the other guys.

But there is an interesting name on your list.

I would absolutely take Hyde over Church. In a heartbeat.
