That's not necessarily true.

When he was a full-time starter in KC in 2010 he threw for over 3,000 yards and had 27 TDs and only 7 picks for a QB rating of over 90.

He's hasn't been on any team of much talent since.

I did not know the exact stats so thanks. Nice rebuttal.

I would respond that 2010 is a lifetime ago in the NFL though. I think he has shown he is not a starting caliber player any longer. I think we can hope for two things 1) he can be a solid veteran backup and 2) we don't need to find out if he can produce this year. I think if he winds up starting minus a weden injury that it means our season is not going well over the next two months.

I thought Matt Cassel was about 45 years old by now but surprisingly he is only 33 (two years younger than Romo). That's the only positive I could find.

I will be honest, my impression of Cassel is based off the Miles Austin coming out party game in KC when he was still a youngster. He was not that good then.

Wow.. there are some very strong opinions in this thread... many of them wrong.

Bottom line is that this was as good a move as Jerry/Stephen could make... I like the move.

and I can't believe someone thinks 1.8 million is too much for a backup QB... Jerry paid
Bernie Kosar 1 million for the stretch run to the playoffs over 20 years ago!

also, people mentioning RG3 and Michael Vick as replacements should just stop watching and talking football
right now.... take up knitting or garbage collecting.

It's a good pick up. He has starting experience. Weeden knows this is his last chance now.

This isn't just about if Weeden gets hurt. They went out and got a proven veteran quarterback who's made a Pro Bowl before. Won a lot of games. Made the playoffs. This is a team still trying to win a championship. Weeden has a short leash. If he struggles Cassell will step in for him. Whichever one of them can play mistake free football is who we'll stick with.

Well, I pretty much thought it goes without saying that if Weeden sucks they'll try someone else so I saw no reason to state that. Garrett has proven time and again that he'll play the best guy at every position, no matter how they came to the team.

Cassell will have to learn the offense and he will likely just be getting comfortable in the offense by the time Romo is coming back.

Many people would scoff at calling Cassell a pro bowl QB and a proven playoff QB. Many.

While that is technically correct... it has been a long, long time since he played in New England and he has had many, many chances at other stops. And he has failed many times.

Maybe he does ok in Dallas. Maybe not. The big problem I see is that Garrett is going to want him to know the system well before playing him and that will take a while.

If you want to predict that he'll do better than Weeden and that he was brought in to replace him, then by all means, go ahead.

But right now, nothing is a given including how long or short Weeden's leash is. To say otherwise is pure speculation on your part.

You can't be that dense. You are paying a little under 1.8 million for a proven backup of your backup. If Weeden can't perform or is injured Cassel could be ready to roll in a week or two.

Weeden got blown up on the td pass to twill, he even said after the game it was a hard hit. So him getting hurt wouldnt be a huge shock

Reasonable retort.

I am not saying that I necessarily agree with their opinion on Weeden, but it is clear they feel that way and I will give them the benefit of the doubt until I see something different with my own eyes.

I actually like the Cassel trade in case Weeden stinks up the joint.

So potentially kills 2 birds with one stone, if Weeden goes down they don't have to play Moore and if Weeden blows they have another option.

There are no Joe Montana's out there waiting for a phone call. So the Boys sucked it up and made what they hope is the best decision. We shall see. Frankly I would have gone all out to get Kitna back myself but odds are he said no right away.

our perfect scenario: Weeden does decent, Romo comes back and takes us to playoffs.

scenario behind cassells trade: Weeden sucks as starter, Romo comes back , gets RE INJURED. dallas will make use of cassell. hes our best shot w out Romo.

its all a possibility.

Matt Flynn never started in Seattle, had one start in Oakland with a rating of 83.7 rating before going back to Green Bay.

I never said Cassell is gonna unseat Weeden. All I'm saying is if he struggles the Cowboys will make a change. Never said Cassell is a pro bowl QB. I'm saying he's played at a Pro Bowl level before. He's had success as a starting quarterback in this league. More than Weeden. However that doesn't mean I'm not gonna give the guy a chance.

If you've read my posts I'm a believer in Brandon Weeden. I believe he was a victim of a terrible situation in Cleveland much like McFadden was in Oakland. I believe with better talent around him he can and will function a lot better. I think people were far too hard on him for his performance against Arizona because that was a team clicking on all cylinders and was a legit Super Bowl contender. Weeden struggled, but we also didn't help him out. Got far too predictable and put him in a situation where he had to win the game for us. All indications are he's improved since that game. We shall see.

My only gripe is we didn't pick up Cassell when he was cut by the bills.

From the AP story --

"Cassel said he turned down offers to sign with other teams to stay in Buffalo because he was familiar with the Bills’ system and because he didn’t want to relocate his wife, who was eight months pregnant."

So maybe we did make him an offer back then.

(And sorry, Matt, but your wife will have to relocate now.)

What bothers me more is that this was the plan. Weeden was the backup. They did not draft anyone. They even brought Vaughan back.

It is almost that they actually did not think for a second an aging QB with a bad back would ever get hurt and then when he does, they do not trust their own decisions.

Honestly this is probably more about worrying about this organization's ability to evaluate the position and be confident in our system to develop players.

We are going to be in serious trouble when Romo hangs it up.
