Colin Cowherd: Comparing Purdy's situation to Dak

Interesting what Purdy and Darnold are paid after this season.

The Bucs effectively got Baker Mayfield for around $105 million over 4 years with a tick over $50 million guaranteed. He just had an MVP type season.

Flip side of the coin is the Dallas Cowboys paying Dak Prescott $60 million a year over 4 years with $231 million guaranteed.

One good contract and a truly horrific kneecapping contract. Perhaps the offers will be somewhere in between the two for Darnold and a bit more for Purdy.

I think Cowherd is right to an extent. But I think it depends on the QB. This goes back to the discussion about tractors and trailers. You cannot pay a trailer A+ money. But I think you can get away with playing a tractor A+ money. The problem is, there are mostly trailers at QB in the NFL. Only a few guys qualify as tractors. Mahomes might be the only tractor in the league. Guys like Allen and Lamar Jackson are hybrids in my mind.

If you pay a trailer $60 million you cannot give him a good enough team for him to be successful.

Dak was never a tractor. He is not even a hybrid. He is 100% trailer and Jerry should have seen this before he gave him his last contract. Now I think the only way out of this mess is to bite the bullet, take the $90 million against the CAP in 2025, and plan on ejecting Dak as soon after that as possible. His contract is an anchor on the Cowboys and will be until it is off their books. Jerry won't dump Dak of course. It is one of his flaws.

I feel like he will take less money so he can have players around him.
It's possible. I wouldn't be surprised if Sam Darnold does the same thing with the Vikings.

I can understand a Qb going for record breaking money on their 1st contract but after that I can see where they'd be more interested in legacy because they've ALREADY made generational money that will self perpetuate into more money.....but some un-named, un-mentioned Qbs just can't get enough of that lettuce

Questioning someone’s intelligence and class based on making 60 million a year….seems off based lol.
I'll take this as your endorsement of Elon Musk and his ideas.....after all, if a 60 Million dollar guy is intelligent a 30 Billion Dollar guy is beyond reproach.

2025 is shaping up pretty nice so far.

Happy New Year!!

Naw that’s not what I’m saying.

I’m saying if you are offered 60 million and you take it you aren’t intelligent but if you are offered 60 million and take less then you are intelligent? It’s silly. Nobody would go to their job and say give me less so you can keep the money in your pocket lol.

 aww you think you know football.

Look at the record breaking defense guys. Oh, and you have me confused with a Dak fan. Nice try. You have no clue what you're watching. Don't talk to me
Defenses with Dak from '21 to '23

2021 5th in points allowed (Phi. 18th, SF 9th) , 13th in yards allowed (Phi. 10th, SF 3rd), 1st in turnovers (Phi. 28th, SF 20th), sacks 14th (Phi. 31st, SF 7th)
2022 5th in points allowed (Phi. 8th, SF 1st), 13th in yards allowed (Phi 2nd, 1st), 1st in turnovers (Phi. 8th, SF 3rd), sacks 3rd (Phi. 1st, SF 11th)
2023 5th in points allowed (Phi. 30th, SF 4th), 5th in yards allowed (Phi. 26th, 8th), 11th in turnovers (Phi. 23rd, SF 8th), sacks 11th (Phi. 19th, SF 9th)

Interesting. We allowed fewer points over the three seasons, prior to this one, than the other two teams you chose to compare to our defense. Also were ahead in turnovers, and were pretty comparable to the in yards given up and sacks as well). What football are you talking about?

Depends. If I’m Brady I can justify taking a pay cut. If I’m Dak? Why would I take a pay cut? So you can save the money? Because I know you aren’t going to spend it in free agency or trading. You didn’t do it when he made 500k a year why would you do it?

You know it’s wild everyone says Dak got fat off bad teams but nobody ever mentions the defense getting fat on those same teams lol. Anything they did got thrown out the window when they have gave up 50 points in a playoff game to the Packers.

What did they look like against good teams in December and playoffs during those years football guy? Let's see those numbers Stat boy. Then compare to niners and eagles in December and playoffs those years for context. I already know you won't provide it so you can also stop pretending to know football

And just isn't greedy.

Prescott is a terrible human being.
Care to elaborate?

Sports are a different animal than a regular job because there is something called championships and legacy that play heavily into a player’s career. Because of that, across all genres of sports, it’s not unusual or unheard of for star players to take less money over the course of a contract in order to maximize the opportunity for a title. As a fan, I expect players like Dak to care about winning as much as they do getting paid. I don’t give two hair’s off a rat’s arse that he historically broke the bank. I care about winning championships and expect players on teams I follow to care about that, too. I personally think there is a moral imperative for professional athletes to pursue championships as diligently and fervently as they do money and they need to properly balance those two things.

Name one major athlete in their prime that has done this. Do not say Tom Brady at the end of his career with his sugar mama.

Also. LOL at your moral imperative.
