Colts Release DT Jonathan Hankins

New people in charge. Probably didn't want a fat guy who became the poster child for what's wrong with situational football.

Loved him in college (Ohio State), but his conditioning has gone south. I wouldn't want him unless he improved it.

He was pretty good last year but like I said I'm not too familiar with him prior to that. I didn't know he was in better shape than he is now. I thought he was one of those big guys who played big his career.

So just playing conspiracy theory here but the Colts released their DT and have also gained some 2nd round picks....Some inside info on Irving with their D coordinator ANNND Irving will be a Colt.

Hankins doesn't fit Marinellis scheme..a big fat slow 3-4 Nose tackle is what he is.A space eater. He fits best in a 3-4. PASS

He played his best football for the Giants...they ran a 4-3. He also played in a 4-3 in college. And would also like to point out that the 2 backup 1 tech's we have been keeping around on the 53 are both 325+ lbs. Ash and Ross. I don't think Rod hates big guys, he just doesn't believe in investing anything into the position. Not sure what the market for Hankins will be, but if he has to take a cheap 1 year deal I don't see why we wouldn't take a look.

The likely scenario is that the kid got paid and got lazy. Some guys get cut and it wakes them up, others never change. No idea what the deal with Hankins is but it would be important to bring him in for a visit. Maybe even work a weight clause into his contract if it gets that far...but most likely we won't be interested, ya know cause Brian Price.

I actually keep forgetting about Collins. Now that I think about it....they won't touch a 1 tech. They are going to rely on Collins for that. Unless they plan on putting Irving on the outside and moving Collins to 3 tech.

Obviously, since they love position flex, it will depend on who they feel fits best, but I would think the plan is for Irving to be the starting 3-tech, Collins the starting 1-tech and Lawrence and Charlton the starting ends.

I know fans see Collins as a better 3-tech than 1-tech, but he really wasn't disruptive in the 3-tech role last year before Irving took it over and adjusted well to playing 1-tech once Dallas figured out how to better use his strengths at that position. Some also are just stuck on the idea of having a big body at the 1-tech spot, when Marinelli has shown that size isn't really his preference.

If someone signs Irving, though, I could see us moving Collins back to 3-tech because filling the 1-tech role will be cheaper. However, because the 3-tech role is so vital to this defense, I could see us using an early pick on the position and keeping Collins at the 1-tech.

Again, I'm not saying I like this, only that I think it's a realistic interpretation of what this front office will do.

Price is a ok rotational guy and we had better get better there. Our weaknesses on D last year wasn't the db group as one would think,it was at the point of attack right up the gut..at DT,MLB AND SAFETY. You would think we are aiming to solve this, especially at safety since we have a legit db coach in Richard. Hankins played I thought mostly in a 3-4 last year?...

question is,when would we receive the picks for Irving? This year or next? I want the picks now if I'm giving up a potential starter NOW.

Last year, yes. And he got cut from that team(I know they are switching to a 4-3 but clearly his play left a sour taste in their mouth). Before that he played in a 4-3 for the Giants and played well earning a pretty big contract in free agency. Before that he played in a 4-3 at Ohio St and became a top 50 pick in the draft. Now with that info, which scheme do you think he might fit better in?

I think Rod wants players he feels are coachable..and I think a large part of why he seems to want 'orphans" over the big named guys is precisely THAT. He can coach them and they will listen.
Rod hasn't won a damn thing with "orphans," he made a name for himself when he had a rosterful of stars, Sapp, Rice, Lynch and that hall of fame LB. He was also pretty good with Urrlacher and company, where there was a roster full of stars. We should give up that stupid narrative that he needs his bottom of the barrel players. Star players is what he needs.

Oh wow.......I don't know how he'd fit here.....but this would be a nice guy to get. I wonder why they released him? He was probably the one bright spots for them.

Johnathan Hankins - DL - Free Agent
Colts released DT Johnathan Hankins.

This is largely scheme based with the Colts moving to a Tampa-2 defense. Hankins had a solid first year in Indy, but didn't do much to improve their run defense. The Colts have one of the best cap situations in the league but save $8.5 million from his release. Hankins won't struggle to resurface as the top interior lineman available behind Ndamukong Suh. The Titans and Seahawks are possible landing spots.

I don't know much about him prior to going to the Colts but he didn't play bad enough to get cut. May be its a salary situation.
They're new dc just left after being lb coach for 5-6 years. Some of the philsophy against 2 down players may have rubbed off. He never really blossomed on ny until Harrison was signed. Might be the need to have a dominant player next to him overrides what they paid him. Believe it averaged 10m a year!
