‘Smallville’ Creators Have 1 Gripe With Marvel Shows, but Love ‘The Boys’
By Fred Topel | Shobiz Cheat Sheet
November 2, 2022

Why Miles Millar likes ‘The Boys’ more than Marvel shows

The Boys is sort of the anti-superhero show where the superheroes are the villains. That’s more appealing to Millar than Disney+’s litany of interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe shows.

“Things like The Boys, the evolution of that show which I think is fantastic,” Millar said on TV’s Top Five. “That’s something that feels like a new iteration whereas the Marvel shows feel like yeah, that’s more of the same.”

Miles Millar considers Marvel shows homework

For many Marvel fans, the interconnectedness of the movies and TV shows is a selling point. For Millar, it just sucks the joy out of the individual shows.

“It’s feeling more corporate to me but people feel a need to watch so they can fill in those chapters and interconnect and make sure they can understand the next movie,” Millar said. “It’s like okay, it just feels like unless you want to engage in that, it’s not appetizing for me anyway as a viewer. It just feels like hard work now. It feels like they’re victims of their own success in many ways.”

10 Best Superhero Movie Openings
By Blake | CBR
November 5, 2022

The opening scene can make or break a movie. Beginning a comic book movie can be more difficult because directors translate artwork for the big screen while adapting characters and storylines that fans hold dear. The introduction lets the viewer know the director's style and intentions for the upcoming scenes.

A good opening scene for a comic book movie must be visually and audibly appealing while establishing the director's vision for bringing the pages of a comic book to life. The best comic book movie openings initiate the plot and set themselves apart while giving the viewer something to think about long after the final credits roll.

10 Longest-Running DC Comics
By David Harth | CBR
November 5, 2022

DC Comics created the modern conception of the superhero in 1938 with Action Comics #1 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Since then, the publisher has broken new ground in many ways, creating and revolutionizing concepts like the super team, the kid sidekick, the teen team, and so many more. Some of DC's comics have unmatched longevity, even with the various reboots and relaunches of the modern comic industry.

Several DC comics still being published to this day extend back to their Golden Age roots, which is quite impressive. Other books have had very long runs as well, although not all of them are still currently in publication.

An FYI for any Bleach fans. Ichigo Kurosaki & crew have a sequel on Hulu called the Thousand Year Blood War. Looks like five episodes have been released so far. The first English dubbed episode came out last Friday.

I did not know what to expect after its first 366-episode and four-movie run ended nearly ten years ago. However, the sequel may be even better than the original, although I prefer dubbed anime and have only watched the first episode.

:omg:

I read that Doctor Strange did $187 million this year. I expect this one to surpass that. It shows me two things:
  1. The continuing success of the Marvel formula.
  2. The huge change that the pandemic brought to theaters.
While there was change in viewing habits already happening, it’s been greatly accelerated. People just aren’t going to theaters regularly anymore, unless it is gif a ‘Blockbuster’ big-screen event film. Comedies, dramas, and art-house films just don’t get people to come out anymore.

I think that’s why a lot if filmmakers have animosity towards the superhero genre, because they blame it for forcing their films out. When the truth is that fans tastes and viewing habits have changed with their increased options.

I gave Shazam! a slightly higher grade than Black Adam (7.50 - 7.25), although I would want to go back-and-see the latter if the urge ever hit me. The movie needed less Dwayne Johnson's world famous WWE persona in my opinion but I would take a The Rock-centric film over one that just gushes Chuck slash Big vibes.

i saw Black Adam film, too.

and once again, seems like the studios want to make sure Dwayne Johnson/Black Adams ....looks more like Dwayne Johnson .. (much like Jason Statham)
.. instead of looking more closer to Black Adam character - i mean they just have to have that baldness cube ? ...

i wanted the original Black Adam look, with the Eddie Munster hairline and pointed ears

It would have been nice for him to have the comic style hair look, but I fully think if they tried it would have looked Jason Witten on MNF bad. I'm glad they just let Dwayne Johnson stick with the bald look. Now Don Johnson could have pulled off the haircut.

Speaking about hair, I think the MCU Dr Strange's hair looks horrible. Looks like an aging gentleman trying to hide his greying hair. Such a bad dye job.

 James Cameron is at it again. He couldn't even wait until the release of his Avatar: The Way of Water before cracking on superhero movies again.

James Cameron Takes Aim At Marvel, DC Characters: “They All Act Like They’re In College”
By Matt Grobar | Deadline
October 25, 2022

Add James Cameron to the list of elite filmmakers taking umbrage with today’s superhero films.

The three-time Oscar winner critiqued the storytelling of Marvel and DC in an interview with The New York Times published on Tuesday. “When I look at these big, spectacular films — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college,” he said. “They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”

Thankfully I love much of his work. Otherwise, I would detest his neverending criticism more.

I read where Tarantino added his two cents the other day. Perhaps I should compile a list of directors, some of whom I really respect, who are coming out of the woodwork about their dislike of superhero films?

lol. It is getting ridiculous. Everyone has different opinions about movies. Box office IS the bottom line as far as studios are concerned. And moviegoers spend more when they are entertained more.

This ever-mounting ridicule will only heighten potential audience interests in these movies. Not dampen it. They are entitled to their opinion like everyone else but they are all in for a rude awakening if they somehow think their public dislike will notably erode worldwide entertainment value of these films. Love Tarantino, especially for making Kill Bill, but UNpopular ain't happening for a LONG time.

The sheer Jealousy and Paranoia against Marvel's Super Hero films is just off the chart. ..and these anti-Marvel directors and studios may not still be around when the Super heroes films
somehow die down because the Marvel ocean of super characters is so very vast and forever.

and Marvel will always have countless upon countless spinoffs after spinoffs. Hannibal King,.. Sons of the Tiger, ..White Tiger,... Daughters of the Dragon, ..Mister Sinister ..Cable .... X-Factor .... Agatha Harkness...Alpha Flight .....etc.

I had zero issue with Dwayne Johnson's look. In fact, I like his hooded cape scenes very much. It's other stuff that could have been done differently I would not have missed.

New DC Studios Boss James Gunn Addresses Calls to 'Save' Legends and Others, Teases Scope of 'New DCU'
By Matt Webb Mitovich | TV Line
November 6, 2022

<snip>

In a Sunday afternoon thread, Gunn said that he “Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow and #ReleaseTheAyerCut and fan support for other DC projects over the years. The majority of these requests were enthusiastic and respectful.

“As the new (and first ever) CEOs of DC Studios,” he continued, “Peter and I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, and let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC.

“Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening and open to everything as we embark on this journey,” Gunn told fans, “and will continue to do so for the next few years.”

That said, “all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, and telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows and animated projects,” Gunn explained. “We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.”

I can see why ‘other directors’ are rooting for Marvel to fail. Their success is making it harder fur anyone to do anything different.

But as I’ve stated numerous times, it’s largely due to their being ‘huge films’ made for the big screen. Big things happen in those films, and fans will PAY for the big screen experience to see that.

The artsy, ‘talkie-talkie’ films? No. That doesn’t get the masses out to the theaters anymore. We can watch that on our big screens at home and not miss a thing in terms of what happens on screen.

THAT IS EXACTLY WHY there is such a disparity.
