New DC Studios Boss James Gunn Addresses Calls to 'Save' Legends and Others, Teases Scope of 'New DCU'
By Matt Webb Mitovich | TV Line
November 6, 2022

<snip>

In a Sunday afternoon thread, Gunn said that he “Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow and #ReleaseTheAyerCut and fan support for other DC projects over the years. The majority of these requests were enthusiastic and respectful.

“As the new (and first ever) CEOs of DC Studios,” he continued, “Peter and I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, and let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC.

“Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening and open to everything as we embark on this journey,” Gunn told fans, “and will continue to do so for the next few years.”

That said, “all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, and telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows and animated projects,” Gunn explained. “We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.”

When I read that i immediately think of ‘Crisis’ done throughout all of the different mediums. Separate but connected at the same time. And hoping that ‘connection’ will get people to check out all of their offerings.

Those ‘universe-wide’ events like Secret Wars I and II got me collecting a bunch of other comic titles back in the day.

I read where Tarantino added his two cents the other day. Perhaps I should compile a list of directors, some of whom I really respect, who are coming out of the woodwork about their dislike of superhero films?

lol. It is getting ridiculous. Everyone has different opinions about movies. Box office IS the bottom line as far as studios are concerned. And moviegoers spend more when they are entertained more.

This ever-mounting ridicule will only heighten potential audience interests in these movies. Not dampen it. They are entitled to their opinion like everyone else but they are all in for a rude awakening if they somehow think their public dislike will notably erode worldwide entertainment value of these films. Love Tarantino, especially for making Kill Bill, but UNpopular ain't happening for a LONG time.
Tarantino is the most overrated writer/ director there is.

That is more harsh than I would have described him but understand why anyone feels that way.
He has some decent movies, but he relies on shock value and "cool factor". Django was good, but without the shock value, it would have been a bad comedy. Reservoir Dogs was absolutely pointless. Pulp Fiction was idiotic. If not for Christopher Walken and Samuel Jackson, it would have been completely useless...and even they didn't save it, IMO. Desperado was good, thanks to Banderas.

I watch his movies and can't help but think he was the dork in school who always wished he was cool, and he lives vicariously through his scripts.

Why do I feel relieved you did not include Inglorious <censored>, Jackie Brown, and (most importantly to me) Kill Bill? :muttley:

Tarantino neither directed nor produced Desperado, although he did have a marginally supporting role in the movie. Are you thinking of From Dusk Till Dawn? He was a writer and executive producer of that film.

No, I thought that was one of his movies. Explains why I liked it. Lol
Didn't care for Inglorious, but it wasn't terrible.

Kill Bill was a great couple of movies, though some of the dialogue is cringe worthy. Casting was a big part of the greatness of that.

It was a brilliant idea to pay homage to all the old kung foo movies that way.

Never saw Jackie Brown, but it doesn't look like something I'd care for.

- Imo, that's what helped makes him unique and riveting and greatly appealing to viewing audiences .. it's a mile different and inspiring than other fames directors. Ironically his over the top style and gung ho to the cinema world, reminds me of why people of now flock to the Marvel movies as a different view, direction, and adrenaline rush.

- Have you noticed his use of " Chapter "- notification scenes " ? ....what other director uses that as a staple ?

- If not for Tarantino casting Samuel Jackson in his break out film, ... ironically It wasn't Samuel that Quentin initially pegged for the role of " Jules "
Reportedly it was actually Lawrence Fishburne ..

- And he has produced Oscar and Golden Globe Nominations and Winners ala Christopher Waltz... for yes .. your nemesis " Inglorious Bass Sta's "

- The tribute to Spagetti Westerns .. Shaw Brothers Kung ** ..Blaxplotations.. and don't forget the notable Movie Soundtracks
(ala Kill Bill Vol 1 and .. " Battle Without Honor or Humanity " and . " Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood "
... and don't forget the homage tribute to theme score from " Ironside "

- Simply put if i were to dream of being a movie director .. i would have been Tarantino......

10 Most Satisfying Comic Book Endings Of All Time
By Jason Jarman | CBR
November 8, 2022

No successful story is complete without an equally successful and satisfying conclusion. The stories told in the medium of comics - from Marvel, DC or any other company - are episodic in nature, so few comics have a defined ending in mind when they begin publication. There are exceptions, but comic books are very much a medium driven by an eternal second act.

Whether a comic book series or storyline leaves the reader with a sense of finality is one of the finest marks of its quality. By the continuous nature of comic book storytelling, the reader always wants more, but it's immensely satisfying when the reader can take a breath and know that the story is complete.

Instead of the term " Satisfying ".. i'd prefer " Most Memorable " .. the demise of the Dark Phoenix Saga is indeed a memorable;
here are some more Memorable Endings that i can remember was most "touching "

To this day, i have never figured out if the Black Cat ..aka Felicia Hardy (Marvel comics) has superhuman abilities .or if her abilities come thru the use of hidden devices.
i'll read that Wilson Fisk- Kingpin " gave " psionic abilities that affect "probabilities" which in hand gives her the "bad luck" powers.

But yet i'll also read profiles that Felicia does not have super human powers..

‘If Gemma Chan can play 2 characters in MCU, so can Jason Momoa’: DC Fans Brand Marvel Fans as ‘Hypocrites’ For Calling Out Jason Momoa’s Rumored Lobo Casting
By Rishav Deb Roy | Fandom Wire
November 11, 2022

Jason Momoa’s recent DC Universe statements, combined with a cryptic post from James Gunn, have stoked speculation that the Aquaman actor might also be portraying Lobo. Jason Momoa is teasing a potential new approach for him at DC Studios ahead of the 2023 release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Not long later, James Gunn revealed a Lobo tease on his new social media account. The Aquaman actor expressed his delight for James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the Warner Bros. Discovery DC Films branch and unveiling a very special upcoming project.

Marvel Fans callout Jason Momoa’s Lobo casting rumors

While James Gunn has yet to make any more announcements, the prevailing opinion is that Momoa is certainly engaged with the Lobo character, either for a TV program or a film. The main question, though, is whether he can genuinely portray the famed DC bounty hunter.

Without revealing any spoilers, I do not like the Gemma Chan counterargument considering how events unfolded in Captain Marvel. Chan is playing the Eternal Sersi now. There is zero reason to expect Chan will play the Kree Starforce Minn-Erva again.

A similar scenario does not fit Jason Momoa's hypothetical dual-role situation. Perhaps my opinion would change if some new unforeseen development surfaced about him playing Aquaman in the future.

James Gunn, Peter Safran Are Mapping Out “Eight- to 10-Year Plan” for DC
By Aaron Couch | The Hollywood Reporter
November 10, 2022

<snip>

Gunn noted that he and Safran have begun work on a long-term plan for that story.

“The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be — that is the reason why I’m doing this job because I know that Peter and I can do that,” said Gunn. “We spent the past couple days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the industry, the best writers in the industry starting to map out that eight- to 10-year plan of what it’s going to look like in theater, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters.”

Mamoa would be a main character in both movies, whereas Chan's role was so minor, I hadn't even noticed.

You may not notice but many comic fan nerds that the article talks about (including me) would catch on instantly. Momoa acting in dual roles at the same time is not even similar to Chris Evans playing Johnny Storm in the pre-DCU Fantastic Four movies. Or Michael B. Jordan playing (haha! popular character!) Johnny Storm in the 2015 FF movie and then as Killmonger in Black Panther.

Of course, I, and probably other nerds, would not have any issues with continuity if Momoa dropped Aquaman before signing on as Lobo.

Their project sounds very auspicious and far-reaching. That will require detailed, meticulous planning and coordination between large groups. The plan and project management for something like this needs to be outstanding.

For all of our sake, I hope they can pull it off.

But again, my bet is another attempt at doing Crisis on Infinite Earths. That’s usually their go-to.

Mamoa I would definitely notice. I had no idea who Chan was. Until you posted it (assuming I believe you) I hadn't even realized that Jordan played the Human Torch. Then again, the only person I remember from that disaster is Kate Mara.

Fantastic Four was so bad some people forgot Jordan was on fire. Literally!

I posted back then that I thought Mara portrayal of Susan Storm was "more realistic" than Jessica Alba's was and was one of the few bright spots in the movie. However, the entire movie was poorly made, so she never had the opportunity to better define the character during the film.

It looked so much better in the trailer. Lol
