Commanders trying to move Portis? Giants, Jets, Patriots interested? : Britt in VA : 2/28/07 9:51 AM

Biggest trade proposal on the table is the Skins trying to dump Clinton Portis, since they re-upped Betts. They want picks in return because they don't have many. They like Gaines Adams, but they are more open to moving #6 for additional picks from another team in the top ten -- they have a ton of options. They may even stay at six if Adrian Peterson falls, believe it or not! Portis may be moved and there are several interested teams -- both New York teams and the Patriots.

This is slowly becoming a rumor with legs in the D.C. area. The Commanders are looking for draft picks. Obviously, there is no chance that they'll trade him to the Giants, but interesting that he might be on the way out nonetheless.

I wonder why the Patriots are interested. Maroney is a good one. Although it would be nice to have him and Portis on the same team, I doubt Portis would be willing to share a back field.

Didn't they give him some kind of big signing bonus? Wouldn't the remainder of that be accelerated into this year if they trade him?

Just wondering what effect that might have on their cap.

Would they then target Adrian Peterson in the Draft?

If not, with no 2nd round or 3rd round pick, this is a foolish move.

Even the Skins aren't that stupid. This is just another theory borne out of their wild practices in the past, and the fact that they re-upped Betts. Dealing him makes no sense. They can't get back what they gave up, not even close. Portis probably wouldn't even fetch a second at this point, and they gave up the league's BEST corner, and a second round pick to get him. Nonsense, they are not that stupid.

Funny thing is that the Skins are indeed looking for draft picks.

If I remember correctly, after the 1st round, their next pick is in Round 5.

In any case, it's something bizarre like that.

Could you imagine if JJ had done that to this franchise? Hard core fans would be going nuts.

But my best guess would be that the Skins instead trade down a few spots and acquire picks. They have so many holes to fill in any case . . . .

You are right. Their 2nd goes to the Jets, 3rd Broncos and 4th goes to the 49ers. The foreskins should have thought about those picks before the traded for Mcintosh, Duckett and Lloyd. Do they have the worst front office in the league?

Whether this rumor has any legs or not, and I tend to think it does not.

There is no question that the skins FO is a tad crazy at times.

They will trade away pick after pick for players yet when draft rolls around they are trying to trade down to get more lower round picks or trade away those picks to move back up.

Sadly , for them, the rarely get an even payback for the ones they gave away.

A couple of season ago I thought they were finally getting the gist of things, but then turned around last year and screwed up again.

any team that gives the skins a 2nd for portis is crazy.

Running backs can be had in the draft. This is a horrible time in the nfl to be a running back. They are constantly being replaced! Salary cap has really hurt that position.

I hope no one bails the skins out. I hope they take jammal anderson and he is a stiff and they have no more picks till sunday.

I think this rumor has legs, I really do, this time of the year is always where Danny gets big eyes and comes up w/ crazy ideas, or ideas that seem wonderfully to the insane eye

i get what you're saying...

however, doesn't the fact that they gave up what they gave up to get portis indicate that they are indeed really that stupid?

I agree, not counting arizona and oakland...because they are in a league all their own.

Vinny cerrato maybe the worst decision maker in the nfl.

I cant believe that joe gibbs does business like this. I guess I was too young to realize the types of things he did in the offseason in the 80s when they were a great team.

still suprised though that hall of famer Joe Gibbs is this poor at running a team from the personnel angle, him and cerrato have been very poor.

Interestingly Portishead just came on the XM....

Anyhow, I don't think even Snyder can do something that stpid, and take the bath he'd be taking on dealing Portis, whose value isn't any more than a third with his problem shoulders, and the fact that as a "carry-the-load" back, he's only slightly above average.

It would be hilarious to see Denver pillage them (again) and then turn Portis back into the gamebreaker he used to be.
