Cost for moving Cowboys video board will be "at least $2 million"

Funny thing is the myth buster tried to see if a helium football would fly higher and further and guess what it made no difference
No kidding? That surprises me.

Ditto.

He probably heard that the device they installed that allows them to move it up and down cost millions ($6 million to be exact) and just ran with the story.

Jones knew it was concern, that’s why he had the soccer guys trying to kick it and watched the Titan punters in pre-game. They knew it was too low. So if this was a huge miscalculation...i wouldn’t trust standing under it.

Allow me to clear something up.

From what I've gathered around here, U2 requested to have the board at its current level. It was basically a deal breaker from what I understand. So the earliest the board could be moved would be sometime in early October.

Here's some info from Kristi Scales:
The digital board will NOT remain at that height of 90' for long. I spoke with the stadium's general manager, my friend Jack Hill, BEFORE the game about the board's height. Cowboys Stadium has been planning for a couple of months to raise the board in order to accomodate the rock group U2 which will perform a concert in Arlington on October 12th. U2's staging is so enormous, Cowboys Stadium planned to raise the digital board by 25 feet.
And because Cowboys Stadium would have to raise the digital board for U2 by 25 feet, the team/stadium decided to invest an additional $6-plus million for new hoists and suspension so that the board can be raised/lowered more easily between all events.

I think this is a pretty definitive answer on the issue.

But the concert's not until October. What if the league doesn't want to wait that long?

Yeah, that's what I said in the other thread -- this may cause them to raise higher sooner. I really don't get the problem. Just raise it 25 feet and get it over with. It would look better that way and this silly discussion is over.

It surprised me and them it has to do with the way the football is built and the physics behind it.

The reason they did that myth was because of the Ray Guy punt and how the NFL took and tested the ball back in the day.

the astros have "tals hill", the red sox have the "green monster"
cleveland has the "dog pound"....at some point dont you just say
kiss my *** this is how our field plays ???

pardon my french, just got home from a Robert Earl Keen concert and my attitude may have been adjusted by a few Shiner bocks !

I wonder...

A. If they have to raise it, how far further up it needs to be?
And...
B. If that would effect the sightlines within the stadium?

Note to mention Robert Earl Keen's music is known to make everyone shy and timid.

If the NFL wants Jerry to raise the video board then the NFL should pony up for the raising of the board. It's not like the NFL can't afford it.
So if opposing fans/media have a problem with the video board being so low then they came blame the NFL if it is not raised.

I was at the game and during pre game warmups they were hitting it with ease.

We were too, and saw the same thing.

I have to admit I agree a little with the poster who raised the homefield comparisons of the "Green Monster" and the Astros' outfield.

There's a little romance to the idea of having a homefield advantage that is uniquely Cowboys Stadiumish. A giant video board that can smack down punts certainly falls in that category, especially when it doesn't seem to affect our own punter.

But I also fear the egg-on-face nature of it all. Even if Jerry complied with league rules, fans/media will look at the video board's height as a failure on our part.

Just because our Punter isn't affected doesnt mean he never will be.
That stadium is gonna be there ALOT longer than McBriar.

true but you would think any punter for the cowboys would be more used to punting with the screen than any visiting punter

Precisely. If the opposing team's punters are hitting it and our's isn't because he's used to it?

Home. Field. Advantage.

If the NFL wants us to move it, pony up the cash for us since the NFL signed off on it and we'll get to it in the offseason. If Jerry gets a winch system installed, great but come game time it should still sit exactly at the same height the NFL agreed on in the first place.

Home.

Field.

Advantage.

We didn't cut the crown off the field at Texas Stadium to accommodate Brett Favrererere's inability to play on it, so we shouldn't have to move the video board either.

Home.

Field.

Advantage.

They don't like it? **** 'em and feed 'em fish heads.

It blows my mind that they can hit that thing. I couldn't kick a ball filled with helium that high. Amazing.

I think the Titans punter was trying to hit it and in a real game no one would. You punt downfield for distance not straight up.

That's not entirely true. If you're around your own 45 or on the 50 you punt straight up to let the coverage team get down and down it hopefully inside the 10. This creates a problem since we have a monstrosity of metal that stretches 60 yards from one 20 yard line to the other.

I know Jerry's pride was hurt when that punt went straight up into the board.
