OK, this is much ado about nothing.

According to ESPN Dallas:

IRVING, Texas – Set to be a restricted free agent, the Cowboys signed center Phil Costa to a two-year contract worth $2.7 million, according to a source.

As a restricted free agent Costa would have earned $1.323 million in 2013 and now will count less on the cap with the Cowboys tying him up through 2014.

Costa received a signing bonus of $450,000. His cap number will be $975,000, saving the Cowboys roughly $350,000 this year.

How on earth can people complain about this...minimally, Costa is servicable, minimally...IMO, if we bring in one new guard next to him paired with Livings, and we use a higer pick on RT, then the line will be pretty good, if healthy...

...this deal is cheap and is only for two years...if we dumped the whole thing before he plays another down, it's only $2.7m...that is not a lot. And, if he ends up being a player like he was in the Baltimore game, then the contract is a steal for the Cowboys

Fredd approves!

I would much rather he be gone but that is pretty cheap. Probably the best we could hope for with Jerruh slobbering all over him

wow I really thought you knew this:

Ngata injured his knee early in that game.

did not know about the shoulder injury. So bad knee and bad shoulder. Yeah Costa was so impressive

Wow, why is it you bring this up, i.e. Costa benefiting because Nagata was injured yet the previous season when Costa was at his worst, he was also injured– yet there is no acknowledgement of that.

So he put Ngata out of the game then.

Its plain for all to see that you have staked your reputation on Costa being terrible. Myself, I prefer to stake my rep on things that are good for the team.

How did Costa put Ngata out of the game?

It remains to be seen what Costa truly becomes. But what he is right now is as good an interior lineman as we have. Now everyone (Jerry included) knows we need to upgrade. Between Costa, Cook, Bernie, Livings, Leary, & Kowalski we probably have some very solid backups at minimum. Until the superior players show up and demonstrate it we need these current players too.

Camp will then determine the pecking order, who stays and who goes. Its premature to be letting these O-lineman walk.

If we end up with better players and have to cut Costa and eat some cap space... HALLELUJAH!

Great post!

I am just pointing out you can characterize it however you like. Costa was on Ngata while he was in there and Ngata could not stay in the game. We were dominating even when he was out there.

burm has a vested interest in Costa sucking. If he doesn't then he looks like he has no idea what he is talking about because it's been a pretty constant refrain from him for two years.

It's still up in the air whether or not Costa can succeed.

It's scary how bad we are at evaluating talent.

I'd literally take a cap hit just to get him off the roster.

+1 plus i especially dislike the fact that this guy has had back issues too.

Over and under that he gets a back injury or becomes a head case is 3 games. I'm taking the under. Costa is a joke!

He dominated someone when the running game chalks up 200+ yards.

I don't understand why Costa gets so much hate compared to Cook.

I realize that Cook's problems were not as immediately visible. His shotgun snaps were OK and he didn't have any huge gaffs in pass-protection; however, Cook is a terrible terrible run blocker.

Cook can't get leverage in straight ahead run blocking due to being 6-6 and he is too slow-footed beyond his first 3 steps to effectively run block in stretch run types of plays or any 2nd level blocking.

Shotgun Snapping: Cook > Costa

Pass Protection: Cook > Costa

Run Blocking: Costa >>> Cook

It's like picking your favorite member of Milli Vanilli.

Cook is terrible, but he was acquired in a pinch due to injury. Costa, believe it or not, is seen as a potential piece for the future. His presence on this roster effects what we do at the position. Cook's presence doesn't. They see him for what he is. A scrub.

It's about what the team thinks of the player and how it effects their personnel moves.

Seems like being injured is a great way to get an extension around here.

HE dominated someone? Maybe a backup to Ngata

So one backup dominates another and you annoint him a Pro Bowler?

and you DO REMEMBER that the previous week the Chiefs- with NO PASSING GAME AT ALL- ran very well vs the Ravens.

At that time the only guy on the Raven's front playing well at all was Ngata and he got injured early on in our game.

So making anything out of ONE GAME OF THE YEAR is pretty THIN.
