Umm...I don't know how to tell you this, but we didn't make the playoffs last year.

14-15 season was 12-4
15-16 was 4-12
16-17 tbd.

Its confusing but the season starts in one year and superbowl is played after the new year. Am I crazy?

I think Claiborne set the franchise back a year and some poor health status the last few years certainly hasn't helped.

I will never understand the Claiborne pick. They never brought him in for a visit and it just seemed like they wanted to make a draft move and splash.

But you never know. Some players do take longer to come around.

Michael Irvin was considered a bust in his first two years.

Due to his injuries and other circumstances, Michael Irvin never caught more than 32 passes his first three seasons. They weren't sure his injuries would ever fully heal.

It wasnt until his 4th season that he turmed into the Playmaker. That was in 1992, the Cowboys first Super Bowl in the 90's.

Randy White, 2nd overall draft pick, started one game in his first two seasons, he was a complete failure as a linebacker and considered too small for DT.

Finally, the coaches relented and put him at DT in his 3rd year. That began a string of 9 consecutive Pro Bowls with 7 of them All Pro.

Both of these high 1st rounders were late bloomers but ended up in the Hall of Fame.

Great post. I unfortunately dont think Mo has it between the ears. I hope he proves me wrong. He was better last year, and he made mention last year that he finally understood how to study film.

How many years did we give Jimmy Smith before we cut him? That was one that really bothered me knowing we had him and moved on and then he became a damn good reciever in Jax.

Then why aren't we better? The bottom line supports his argument.

Coaching is more to blame than the players, there were plenty of games we lost because of bad play calling & clock management.

First and foremost, I really like Sturms articles. I generally think he is the best writer out there. Even when we disagree, I feel like he is reasonably unbiased and a great source of information.

I do not like this article. Here are a few bullet points why:

1. He sabotages our numbers by including a year that we had no 1st round pick, while most every other team did. Our first selection actually coming in the 3rd round.
2. He separates Jeff Ireland from the 'Present Group' but not Ciskowski. A man who was relieved of his duties after a short 4 year run.
3. He is ignoring that drafting is only one piece of if a player is successful - the second is coaching. Jason Garrett took over coaching for this team in 2010.
4. For some inexplicable reason, he excludes UDFA. As far as I am aware, the entire point of a draft is to add young talent to your team for the coaches to develop. Who cares if they come in the 6th or UDFA? We are still meeting our primary purpose - adding young talent to develop.

There are two legitimate ways to run this exercise if you are attempting to be objective when discussing the *CURRENT* regime. You start the data in year 2010 or in 2014. What happens when you do that? You erase 12 awful picks selected by Tom Cisowski and developed under Wade Phillips.

To me - he is being unfair and a bit ridiculous with comments like:

Those 4 picks, along with Mo Clai and B Jones, are all the first round selections since Jason Garrett became coach. That is 4 current all pro players, our last years 1st and 1 bust. In no way is that 'average'. That is extremely above average. I challenge you to find 1 other team that has 4 all pro players in their last 6 first round picks. We are the cream of the crop. Even including that he is going by 'season starts' - - every single one of them has been a major contributor/starter since they were a rookie.

This is an unfair criticism as you are using drafts that were not done by "the current front office". If you want to properly confront the current front office, please redo your article starting in either 2010 or 2014. Then it will actually be 'objective'.

Great Post with valid points. Bravo.

In all three cases the division championship came down to game #16. In all three cases the Cowboys lost to the eventual division champion who went into the playoffs.

2011 would have been so different if Murray wadnt hurt against the Giants. He had rushed for over 700 yards in the previous 7 games.

In 2012 Romo threw an INT with 3 minutes left in game 16 trailing by 3. It was his 3rd, not his best day.

In 2013 Romo was hurt the Cowboys had to rely on Orton. They almost pulled it out. Down by 8 with 4 mintes left they scored a TD but failed on the 2 point conversion.

Realistically, it was possible for the Cowboys to go to the playoffs in Jasons first 4 years.

Last season was a fluke, the product of horrendous injuries, dumb offseason moves, and bonehead players.

It would defy basic natural laws and statistical probability for these issues to repeat as severely in 2016.

This is a good football team on the verge.
