Barry Church fascinates me. The raw numbers are there. The consistency is there. But is he just an average player putting up some good stats on a bad defense? Or is he a hidden gem that is suffering due to his porous teammates? Church had 107 solo tackles in 2013. No other safety in the NFL had more than 88. Church finished 8th in the league in tackles with 135 total tackles. That is a ridiculous amount.

Church is the ultimate test case as to whether you prefer a bird in the hand or two in the bush. You know what you are getting from him and it’s a very solid player who won’t lose you games. Think of him as the Alex Smith of safeties. Good enough to get by with, but maybe a player you always wish you could upgrade. But let’s first take a look at how Barry Church measures up physically when compared to some of the best strong safeties in the league:

I think Church will continue to improve as a player and I'm pretty happy thus far with his play but he needs a lot of help on that side of the ball starting with the guys up front.

you can't have a team full of stars. you need a few. you need a few elite players and they will lift everyone around them. I think barry church is good, but not great. with that said, every DB field needs a strong front 7 and the right scheme for them. and then he can be put in a position to succeed, doing things he excels at and avoiding things he is not good at, because of having a strong team around him.

This is such a typical Jerry Jones kind of player. Cutting corners to save a buck. An undrafted player that fits the mold of a SS. He looks the part to fool the uneducated fan. He's ok....but you are left wanting to see more impact plays. And then in the end Jerry will over pay to keep this type of JAG in house.

probably more mediocrity, but more fans thinking he is special followed by a HUGE contract extension for getting two interceptions in a year.......

Love church and i think he'll get even better. He's one of the only 4 starters on d we dont need to replace.

I think he holds up at the SS position okay. He's not Kam Chancellor or anything, but he is a very sure tackler and plays great run support. Needs to improve on his coverage but overall he's pretty average in that area.

One thing most of us fail to realize is that Safety is probably the most talent depleted position in the league, and the rule changes have made the boundaries of play more ambiguous and hard to excel in. Yeah we want more, but we should probably be happy with what we got (with Church at least).

That said, I would hate to see him get an over inflated contract, too.

Church has been forced to play FS because they don't trust the young guys. Kam can't cover period.

Kam works well in the zone scheme. I haven't seen much of him in man to man instances, but his penchant for releasing and picking up the right guy puts the fear of god in receivers, most notably now, Vernon Davis.

I like Church a lot, and think he's seriously underrated by most of us. We need another above average NFL player across from him.

I agree, I think not having a front 4 that can stop the run or get after the QB puts Chruch in a very tough position.

What people have to realize Barry church started 16 of his career 19 starts this yr in a new defense from what he played in his first 3 yrs. And he did all this in his first yr starting basically.

Yes, by all means. Let's keep tinkering -- forever if need be -- with average players who one day might be good players. And let's keep tinkering with Ware, hoping he'll get back to all-universe status, and let's keep hoping that somehow, some way, our 2nd-tier and 3rd-tier players will also become good players. By that time, it will be 2020 and we'll be 31 in the NFL rankings.

Good plan!

He is not special but like others have stated, you can't have stars at every position. He is a little slow for my tastes and would be happy to see Wilcox develop and a Rookie become the starting tandem in the future. There is no need to rush him off the team by any means but the team should be activley looking to upgrade.

I don't consider building a front line as tinkering, I don't care who is at CB or safety without a pass rush a decent QB and WR will have a field day. Larry Brown not a great CB yet was a big part of winning a SB in large part because of the pressure on QB

Barry Church is here on a bargain bin contract and has shown signs of improvement. There's no reason that we can't upgrade our safety position in the draft.

Been a Barry Church fan since he was in college before we brought him here. My biggest concern for him was always his speed.

He plays more like a strong safety, which is why I think a guy like J.J. Wilcox or Jimmie Ward from NIU would be a good fit to play the rangy role over the top.

I think Calvin Pryor could also play the FS role, if that's what Dallas wants, but he too plays more like Church than not - downhill, aggressive, good tackler.
