I agree. You know you're elite when you want Taco Charlton over T.J. Watt.

Or think Trysten Hill is worth a 2nd round pick.
None of the teams are perfect but there’s no doubt McClay is one of the best. The fact you don’t understand that is absolutely no surprise.

My bad I didn’t realize that statistical data didn’t count as research in your eyes.
Statistical data, sure. Some dude just regurgitating fractions and percentages with zero research to back it up, not so much.

Here look I'll do it. You're wrong, it's actually 28% of 2nd rounders getting a 2nd contract and 2/5ths of 2nd and 3rd rounders getting 2nd contracts with other teams.

That was fun.

You made the claim that the Cowboys success on day 2 the last 10 years compares favorably to the rest of the league. Now prove it.

Bet you won't.

You’ll get another scrub DT in the 2nd or 3rd round and you’ll like it.

The biggest disappointment was that everybody else knew they were mistakes as soon as they made the picks.
When I listened to McClay talking about how Charlton was the better fit I lost all respect for him as a talent evaluator.

He's merely getting the Stephen Jones treatment before fans had to eventually admit Stephen sucked too. He used to be the savior. Now it's McClay. I'd fire every last one of them. That 2nd and 3rd round list is awful.

To be fair. Taco did fit in quite nicely with the rest of the bums they had on DL at the time.

On that note too. Two drafts ago they selected a CB with their 2nd and 3rd round pick.

Last season after brown and Lewis got hurt. Our secondary was struggling because they couldn’t rely on the murderer and Gumby to play. They literally signed guys off the couch to play over them.

Just awful.

who said anything about a bunch. One would be nice. What have they done in the 3rd? Its blah.

You would guess? I would be will to bet some have pro bowlers from the 3rd.
Not saying there are no pro bowlers on other teams. I’m saying that drafting solid/average guys with no studs and no duds is not bad. It’s not exceptional either but I’m not looking at that list of guys and feeling like we’ve been terrible.

Could be better but could be a lot worse. It’s far down on the list of my concerns. If we keep drafting Diggs and S. Williams in round 2 and All-Pros in round 1 then what we’ve been doing in round 3 works fine.

That is true. They're also had three 3rd round picks and ended up with Osa, Golston and Wright.

When people talk about how well the Cowboys draft I assume they must be talking about just the 1st round.

And y’all are afraid to trade these picks

26+ 3rd for Bijan

No brainer
Using trade capital on a freakin' RB.

This forum never learns. Bunch of people wanting to replicate the 90s with Smith in a very different league.

I think they do a pretty solid job in the mid to late rounds. I don’t know how they compare to other teams haven’t run those numbers.

But the hit rate for everyone in those rounds is so small you just can’t rely on that regularly.

Second round has been horrible overall though. they telegraph those picks ahead of time. Everyone knew they were taking Sam Williams last year. Everyone knew they were forcing the pick at corner when they took Kelvin drive by Joseph.

They forced the pick on trysten hill.

Etc etc. they pre select who they want in the second round and take them no matter who else is available. They lucked out when they chose right on DIGGS

If you sum up day 1 and day 2 picks, below is the 2012 through 2021 hit rate on acquiring a all-pro or pro bowler across the NFL. The drop-off from the 1st to 2nd round is big. The Cowboys have done fairly well in the 2nd round drafting 3 Pro Bowlers and 1 all-pro over that time. 1st Round has netted 4 All-Pros and 7 Pro Bowlers. That's a 44% hit rate on an All-Pro over that time and 78% of the time with a Pro Bowler. The only 1st rounders to not make a Pro Bowl over that time period are Taco Charlton and Morris Claiborne. In the 2nd round that's a 10% all-pro hit rate and 30% Pro Bowl Hit Rate. If you want to exclude Jaylon Smith they're still slightly better than league averages in the 2nd round. :)

1st Round:

All Pro: 14%
1+ Pro Bowls: 37.5%
2+ Pro Bowls: 23.4%

2nd Round:

All Pro: 4.7%
1+ Pro Bowls: 15.3%
2+ Pro Bowls: 6.9%

3rd Round:

All Pro: 2.7%
1+ Pro Bowls: 11%
2+ Pro Bowls: 5.1%

Compared to most other teams this is actually a pretty good hit rate. Once you get to the 3rd round my expectations start to drop a little bit too. You get a decent rotational player or fringe starter in the 3rd, especially one that you either retain on a reasonable 2nd contract or leave and nets you a comp pick I would consider a success.
Best-case scenario is we end up with a DeMarco Murray-level running back. Worst-case scenario is we end up with a Chaz Green-level offensive lineman.

Terrible job on 3rd rounders. Makes me wanna just say use that pick to trade up to get whoever you want in 1 or 2.

Eh, most of them were/are starters and a couple others were/are relied upon rotationally. I’d be curious to see how it stacks up with the rest of the league but I can’t imagine that it’s any worse than average.

Starters: T-Will, Maliek Collins, J-Lew, Gallup, Connor McGovern, and Osa.

Rotational: Gallimore and Gholston

TBD: Tolbert

Leaves only Wilcox (who was a valuable
STer), Chaz Green, and Nahshon as guys who haven’t been starters or reliable rotational level players. Perhaps Gallimore slides in here as well but he’s played a lot more than these guys.

All in all that’s pretty good for the 3rd. Solid starters and rotational guys is kinda what you get here. Key word here is “starters” not “stars”. Haven’t had any huge performers in the 3rd recently but few duds as well.

Interesting that Wilcox didn't make the starter list. Without looking it up I'd have guessed he started more games than any of those guys, certainly played more snaps.
