Jerry Jones: Tony Romo's extension is close

USA TODAY Sports Staff8:50a.m. EDT March 20, 2013

PHOENIX -- Jerry Jones is sure of two things: The Dallas Cowboys and Tony Romo will come to an agreement soon on an extension, and Romo will "not be paid to be a bus driver."

(Of course, there's no disgrace in that, given how the Cowboys are traveling these days. Somebody has to be trusted with the Jonesmobile, a 45-foot-long luxury motor coach the owner purchased recently and took to the NFL scouting combine. It ain't exactly a soccer mom's minivan.)

But if he isn't driving the bus, Romo certainly is driving the discussion, and Jones addressed the quarterback's contract negotiations during a break in the NFL owners' meetings Tuesday. While Jones believes a deal will be done soon, he refused to pick a date.

Say whatever you will about Jerry Jones, but you have to give props to him on the way he's kept this 8-8 nucleus intact!

Yep! he pays a hell of a lot to keep all his overrated 8 and 8 players here. it's really sad. he is about to make yet another big mistake with Romo.

And if he lets Tony, Ware, Miles, Rat, whoever walk, he's criticized for how he should have kept them.

So it's basically a two year deal with an optional 3rd year. There's no way Romo sees the final year of that deal. We should probably be able to cut bait after 2 years I'm guessing.

Actually I am betting that it's more of a three year deal with a last year that is like 30m with a high salary and like a roster bonus or something that is 10-15m that he will never see.

Wow, Romo really did give us a hometown discount. He could have gotten way more on the open market as a free agent next year.

My guess is that it is a 3 year 56.5 million dollar extension. If not, we got a good deal!

I don't see $17 million a year for Romo as any type of hometown discount. If this is true, what he didn't do is hold the team hostage for a 5 or 6 year deal at $17 per which would be a whole lot worse.

If we had to franchise Romo next year, it would be over $20 million. If he is basically taking $17 a year, the difference is $3 million he is giving up.

That is why I said Romo was giving us a discount, of course players usually take the long term deal at a lower market value because of the security a long term deal gives you.
