Cowboys have 19.3 million in cap space

I can see Stephen flexing and Jerry lobbying Goodell to implement a Cap Management Award to be given out at halftime of the super bowl. We might not be able to win a playoff game, but we know how to save money.

Just save baby!

I let Dak play out his contract. Need to be sold on him and if he can't get the ball down the field no sense paying him top 3-5 QB $.

This is the third year of his 4 year deal, you can let him play all this year and then make a decision on whether or not to sign him to a new deal, if he does better this year his cost will only go up after 2019, a great 2018 season or even a much improved season as far as decision making, throws made, etc. then you need to work out a long term deal after this year....

Yeah they need to make the decision after this season. If they plan to keep Dak then get him signed because waiting another year means the price just goes up. Plus they should draft a QB asap if they plan to move on(I highly doubt it).

On Cole Beasley, I dont see why we would want to give a large guaranteed contract to a WR approaching 30 years old. Especially one who wasnt that interested in playing football in the first place. Think about all those players who sit back when they get their likely final large signing bonus.

Contracts are based mostly on production, remember he led the team in receptions in 2016 even as a slot receiver. If he performs well then either the Cowboys pay him or somebody else will.

As far as "wasn't that interested in playing football", that wasn't it, he left because he wasn't sure he could compete on the NFL, was scared if you want to use that term, but that was years ago, there is zero evidence he doesn't want to play football now even if that was the case when he first got to the NFL...

No.

Jerry knows most people think (or know) that SB XXX was won with "Jimmy's team", he desperately wants to win another SB that isn't tied any way, shape or form to Jimmy Johnson. As far as making money, the stadium generates huge money for things totally unrelated to the Cowboys, and he has car dealerships and many other investments that make him lots of money. He doesn't need the Cowboys to make him a rich man.

Just review the video of the trophy presentation after SB XXX, there was a wrestling match between Jimmy and Jerry, Jerry's face was flushed and you could tell he was so excited that "one of 500 coaches" won the SB. But after that the "well, that was Jimmy's team" stuck around.

No, Jerry does want another title, or two or three, to say he's only in it for the money is not true. His problem is his ego and trying to be an NFL general manager when he doesn't have the skill set is the reason for no titles, it's not for lack of trying. His ego won't let him even think about not being "the man" of the Cowboys...

A kindred spirit who has seen the light and accepted reality. I applaud you.

Yeah. I could see why a guy setting historic records as a rookie indicates he can't play at all. All sorts of red flags indicate he will never play a down in the NFL from here on out. Good catch.
I never said the guy couldn't play. I merely stated it would be foolish to invest in a guy that had one great year followed by a mediocre year. I would hope that all fans would want to see a couple of great years before we extend his contract long term at a premium price.

Watch Lawrence, Elliott and Dak get the money and then watch the Zone lose it's mind. lol
Well that's exactly what's going to happen. Say all you want about $20m in cap space now, but Zeke ($15m), Dak ($25m) and Lawrence ($20m) are going to eat an awful lot of it in the next two years.

Not to mention the fact that if Byron plays well, he could get close to $10m. Those 4 guys are all due after next year and could take close to $70m alone.

As long as Garrett isn't held accountable, he isn’t going to worry about a title .

From a Dallas area magazine article.

"The Cowboys now own more than 100 Papa John’s franchises in Dallas, Austin, and Waco."

"Jerry’s real estate company, Blue Star Land LP, initiated a marketing plan for a 2,000-unit apartment complex near Austin. Jerry offered game tickets to those who signed leases and managed to get Troy Aikman out to the site, where he tossed a football around with prospects. The project leased up in no time."

"Blue Star, ...has real estate holdings in places like Allen, Prosper, and Austin..."

"Jones doesn’t talk much about his other ventures,"

The Cowboys merchandising, etc. does make most of Jerry's money, but just think how much more it would make with another title? In the mid-90's the Cowboys sold a whopping 25% of the total merchandising sales (Cowboys are the only team that is in control of 100% of it's merchandising), with the ever increasing cost of things, another title or two would bring in a tremendous amount of money. If for no other reason than that, Jerry wants to win more titles, don't ever doubt that's his prime motivation for living....

Need to get Jeff Heath extended before he blows up and costs us $13 million a year. :muttley:

That's exactly right.

Instead of chiding the Cowboys for being a little conservative when it comes to cap space we should be applauding them for being smart and realizing there will be bills to pay tomorrow.

I'm betting most of the folks that are having tantrums weren't Cowboy fans in the early 2000's when the cap was like $100 mil and the Cowboys had 1/3 of it allocated for dead money due to over-priced players being no longer good or on the team period.

I like the conservative cap approach.

This.

Yeah, Jerry wants to make money.

The fastest way to make more of it?

Win titles.

Saving $10 mil on contracts for a given year is chump change compared to the money potentially made from a world title.

Make no mistake Jerry Jones wants to win another championship.

For the record, though I understand why they're being conservative, I would have already traded for and extended ET lol

the entire point of re-signing him early is to not pay top 3-5 QB money.
with salaries rising it is generally good to get in front of young, ascending guys now as opposed to later.
22M a year for a starting QB is going to be chump change in the not to distant future.

any sensible GM will force the player to earn his contract but not with the Dallas FO. Dak will make Aaron Rodgers money because that's what our FO believes he's worth.
