Anthony Spencer re-signs with Dallas Cowboys

  • Dallas Cowboys failed to keep Pro Bowl defensive players DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher, but they are bringing back a veteran pass rusher.

Agent Jordan Woy announced Saturday that defensive end Anthony Spencer re-signed with theCowboys on a one-year contract.

Spencer, 30, had met with the division rival Commanders andGiants in March. Those visits didn't produce a signing, ostensibly because Spencer is still recovering from microfracture knee surgery.

So far we have
DT (4): Melton, McClain, Bass, Hayden
DE(3): Selvie, Spencer, Mincey
DT/DE(1): Crawford

We could still use maybe 2 DEs and 1 DT in this draft. At least 1 and 1. WDE is still a huge need.

I just noticed the names above....4 of the 8 players are coming off season ending injuries.... Amazing... Cowboys are hoping for medical miracle at this point.

Frankly..get me :

Donald DT. If he and Barr are gone I want a trade back and try and get Easley and Crichton and a LB with the extra pick from the trade. I don't know why most analysts aren't pegging a Lb for us. Last year showed we have no depth there either.

I think best case scenario is PUP list and then play 15-20 snaps down the stretch. Which is fine provided its a cheap incentive laden deal like I expect.

He is not expected to be ready for training camp in late July, per an ESPN Dallas report from earlier this offseason.
He might be regulated to the PUP list to begin the season. Counting on anything from him this season would be a gigantic mistake IMO. Get a DE early and in the middle rounds and watch the late cuts for a vet is still the course of action if you ask me.

I hope the staff is smart enough to count on Spencer as just gravy and nothing else; not count on him for ANYTHING.

I wouldn't trust those guys to contribute much, bass won't even make the team.

I really like spencer so im ok with this. But like others have stated we dont even know if Spencer and melton will even be able to play this year. We need to hit defense heavy in the draft still.

All I know is, we have a lot of needs. LBers and secondary are a joke too. There's almost nothing positive about our defense. Our most proven players are one twisted ankle away from going on IR (Lee, Melton, Spencer). And there's really not much young potential besides a CB who was thought to be the next Deion who might be a bust. Then we have a couple of decent players who have only had one good season in their career (Church, Selvie). Then we have some guys who looked decent in the past but awful last year (Carr, Carter). I honestly wouldn't lose sleep if we cut the entire defense.

I would agree with that unless I knew a lot more about his surgery and rehab and it was positive.

Like most have said, I'm fine with this, only if you are assuming that any contribution from Spencer this year is a bonus. This shouldn't change how we address DL in the draft at all.

After all the injuries on the defense the last two years. It really makes you wonder if Dominque Easley should even be on the Cowboys draft board. I just can't see adding another player with medical issues..... Its starting to look like a mash unit on the defense.

and you need to add Moe Claiborne to your list.

This is exactly how they should approach it. Nothing wrong with bringing him back this year, but do not count on him whatsoever for any production.

All those concerned about money need to take a step back and examine this from an analytical perspective. Two teams had him in and either didn't offer him a contract or didn't give him what he wanted. They either determined that his knee is too far gone or that his knee is getting better, but the return on investment is sketchy.

We brought him back on a one year 'prove it' deal with what I'll assume is low money seeing as how there wasn't a rush for anybody to sign him in FA. Those are the best types of contracts: low money deals where there's no longstanding financial impact plus you see players giving it their all as it's often their last gasp for a big payday before Father Time tells them to hang it up.

Make no mistake, Spencer's playing for his NFL life. I'll take that motivation.

Exactly , Now add Sean Lee and Mo Claiborne to the list of guys who will miss games at some point next season and it's setting up for another excuse making Jason Garrett saves his job kinda season.

It'll have to be cheap and it'll have to be at least a 2 year deal to be a good move. I don't think he's going to do much at all this year, the guy still can't even run.
