Cowboys Have Re-signed Anthony Spencer

excellent. we have gotten to the point where we are not forced into drafting DL in round 1. no shante carver nightmare scenarios

We still need to draft for the future. I would say, there's a 99% chance that Free and Spencer are both gone next season. So we definitely need to draft RT and DE early. Also, even with the addition of Spencer, we still need a DE this season. Also, since Melton is essentially on a 1-year deal and we don't know how he'll be after having season-ending surgery, we also need a DT. So, I would say, we need 2 DEs, a DT and a RT within the first 4-5 rounds. It would also be nice to get a OG and a WR.

Should be a contract without signing bonuses. Of he still can't play into the pre season than he can be cut and no hit to salary cap.

Now I really would like us the draft Barr and keep Spencer on the strong side. With Melton & Crawford in the middle we would also have decent depth considering we still spend some later picks on the line.

Where do you see Selvie - weak or string side?

And I agree. I'd like to see Crawford at the 1-tech. I'd like to see every starter on the line capable of rushing the QB. Hayden has no pass rush moves whatsoever.

I would think that if he's healthy Spencer is better on the strong-side than what Selvie is.

There's kind of a "traffic jam" on the strong side if Spencer can contribute.

I agree. And people want to draft Crichton and Ealy.

I don't know what to think until I see the contract (one year or not) and get some type of official report on how he is doing physically.

The last I read about his health is below. Hopefully the Cowboys will release a statement concerning this soon but my guess is after the draft of course. My guess is it will be discussed during the draft at some point. I'll be listening to Norm because I believe he will have the latest and best news not some paid mouthpiece on one of the TV networks.
He is not expected to be ready for training camp in late July, per an ESPN Dallas report from earlier this offseason.

I like this move.. but for some reason it makes me miss the 2012 Spencer.. probably because I know he wont be that guy this year :(

Like it. However this in no way reduces our need to draft his position. Even if Spencer bias 20 sacks, he's still too old to give a big long term contract to.

I like the move. I just hope this move has NOTHING to do with the draft. Like I just hope if a DE falls to them in the 1st or 2nd round they don't say "Well.....now that we have Spencer we can wait a year to address DE...". I hope this is more of a depth move and they continue to go BPA in the draft.

It should say he isn't expected for the start of training camp.

Even if he starts on PuP we are getting a guy who, if his knee is right, is going to contribute big time.

We don't have the #s yet but I have little doubt that this is a low risk/high reward deal for the team.

People say "he's still hobbling" and "not ready to practice" - so what? It is April. There are tons of players in that same boat right now.

I can see them using Spencer on the weakside. Will they? I'm not sure... but he certainly could play there.

At 6-3, 250 pounds Marinelli might see him as a weakside end. If so, that would put our current ends (and tackles) as most likely:

WDE - Spencer/Selvie/Mincey
DT - Melton/Kearse
DT - McClain/Hayden
SDE - Crawford/Bass/Mincey

Going into the draft, Dallas could literally use a high pick or two on either DE and either DT without blinking an eye. IMO, Tackle is the slightly bigger need.

If Dallas drafted (for instance):

Aaron Donald in round 1
and
Scott Crichton in round 2

then Crichton goes strongside to compete with Crawford/Mincey, and Bass goes inside to compete at DT.

The DT's would likely be Donald, Melton, McClain and Hayden/Bass or another draft pick like Caraun Reid.

Spencer/Selvie/Mincey would play on the weakside.

That would provide a lot of competition and versatility along the defensive line. If Spencer made it back ok from the injury, we would actually be pretty damn good at WDE. If he didn't, then Selvie/Mincey would likely provide, at worst, a solid rotation there.
