If we draft a QB with the 4-8th pick, it will be to replace Romo in 2 years or less if he gets hurt again.

A back-up can be found in FA if we want to spend some money. One year and 5m will get us a solid QB. Someone that wants to prove they are still a starter but likes money as well.

If we draft a QB that high it would probably be to replace Romo after one season. Drafting a QB in the top 5-10 would tell me that all this talk from Jerry about Romo having several more good years left is BS. You don't take any player that high in the draft and have them sit behind another player for 2 or more years. For them to develop they need to be on the field. If Jerry were to pull the trigger on a QB that early he's going to be passing up a player that could help the team immediately and that's what every team is looking for in the top 5-10 an instant impact player.

Taking a QB later in the first round after a trade down or in the second round would make a lot of sense but taking a QB in the top 5-10 would point to Romo's days being numbered with the team likely exploring a trade for him. You can read a lot into taking a QB in the top 10 and one obvious read for taking a QB in the top 5-10 is that the Cowboys don't think Romo can stay healthy and now's the time to move him.

Romo missed most of 2010 resulting in that season going down the drain. He missed a season finale elimination game in 2013 with an injury contributing to the Cowboys missing the playoffs that year. He missed one game in 2015 costing the Cowboys that game and him being out most of this season with injuries derailed another season. It's not going to be difficult to figure out why the Cowboys take a QB in the top 5-10 if they do because they can't depend on Romo to stay healthy.

With him getting older they'll be looking for his replacement if they draft a QB in the top 5-10 and IF they do I expect the team to explore a trade for Romo to see what they might could get for him. Another injury plagued season in 2016 would dramatically reduce his trade value so the team would have to start exploring a trade now if they invest a top 5-10 pick on a QB.

Teams can control a first round QB for up to 6 years before they hit FA. Sitting for a year or 2 would not be the worst thing. Plus it isn't likely they draft this high again(unless they ignore the QB situation). It would not be cheap but QB is the one position to spend money on.

DAL has a decision on Romo coming one way or another. His base salaries for 2018-19 are 20m.

I think we should skip drafting a QB this year and take a chance with Kaepernick. I still have faith in the kid. Cowboys should give him a chance.

The OL didn't look nearly as impressive without Callihan. If we can get the QB we want for the future with our first pick then great; he can sit 2 years like Aaron Rodgers. Otherwise I would be happier with some defensive picks and seeing if we can figure out how to get the OL playing like they did last year.
We could try not being last in the NFL in passer rating and see how that works.

We're not talking about just a first round QB we're talking about a top 5-10 QB. That's not a player you want to invest good money in and have them sit for 2 or more years and run the risk of them going stale on the sidelines. A highly touted top 5-10 QB isn't going to reman happy for very long if they have to sit several years behind an established veteran. Rodgers sat for 3 years but he was taken later in the first round. Rivers who was a top 5 pick sat for 2 years because Brees unexpectedly started playing great football but the Chargers finally had to make a decision. The Cowboys have too many needs to use a top 5-10 pick on a backup QB it would be ridiculous. They need an immediate impact player with that pick because like you mentioned they're unlikely to be picking that high again for quite sometime at least we hope not.

If Jerry were to take a QB in the top 5-10 and explain to the media after the first day of the draft that Romo is the Cowboys guy for several more years and the QB they just took is going to be backing him up it's going to lead to questions he and Stephen are going to have a tough time answering. Someone is going to tell Jerry you have a 4-5 win team if you were looking for a backup QB why not trade down and pick up an extra pick and take a QB later in the first round or in the second round?

If you take a pro ready QB that high you have to figure out ways to get them on the field and I doubt Romo will be really happy with that. As soon as he has a bad game fans will be chanting to see our top pick. Every bad throw Romo has it's going to make more and more fans want to see the other QB which will create a QB controversy at some point which isn't healthy for your team. There's no way Jerry can make a move for a top 5-10 QB and sell them as the backup when he has a team that has holes that a top 5-10 pick could fill for years to come.

If I have to sit a QB for 2 years to make sure I get him then so be it.

There is no other way to get a Franchise QB besides getting lucky like Brady and Romo.

Teams don't trade away talented QBs and almost none ever make it to FA.

I would take a look at him for a backup. Let him build up his confidence for a year.

He is still isn't a FA yet. SF may change their minds. He has a team friendly contract that they can gt out of anytime. If a new coach comes in they might love Kap.

There's no guarantees we'll be getting a franchise QB with that pick. If any QB looks to be that good they'll be going # 1 overall. I've pointed out several drafts were none of the QBs taken in the first round panned out. With Romo coming back it would be foolish to take a QB in the top 5-10 with all the needs the team has.

Nah, foolish is pretending we are fine at QB with just Romo.

We need to circle the position and make it a a strength.

Romo is good for 2 years if healthy
Draft Goff at 4 or Wentz/Cook with 2nd
Sign a vet like RGIII, Kap, Foles for a 1 year to back up. Trade them at deadline if Rookie shows promise.
Draft or UDFA a QB to stash on PS like Hogan or Boykin

So who's feeling good about Lynch or Cook in the top ten now?

Both looked awful in the bowls.

Cook was never getting top ten publicity. Now Lynch, yes. If you go off of the bowls and ignore what their body of work has been, then you downgrade him some.

We will be picking 8th. Garrett is the only one dumb enough to think a meaningless win over a team resting its starters is a good thing. All the other 3-4-5 win teams will lose tomorrow. We will be the only team to win and we will watch the top players go off the board before we pick. I hope I'm wrong and the skins go out and try to win but I doubt it.

I too am fearing this scenario.................that would be Garrett giving the fan base one last kick to the balls to end the season.

Foolish not too when Romo will be 36 and at some point get injured again. His future replacement is a need. Just as much as any other.

Even with Romo coming back, there's a high chance he could get injured again and we'd be stuck in the same situation as this year. We need to draft his replacement this year, it has to be done.

Romo's collarbone is like Clayborns Hammy. It's going to go again at some point. I think if Goff is there at 4 you take him. If he's gone then trade down if you can and take a running back and a QB in the second round. 3rd and beyond nothing but defense.

Honestly, not looking forward to tomorrow. I have a feeling we win the game and drop considerably in the draft.

Don't call me a real fan for hoping we fight and lose, call me a realist who knows that we need to maximize this ****** situation we find ourselves in this year.

Some of you aren't comprehending I've said repeatedly I'm in favor of drafting a QB by the second round and am not opposed to drafting one in the first round. What I'm saying is I DO NOT want to draft a QB in the top 10 that would be foolish. The Cowboys aren't 4-11 because of Romo they're 4-11 because they haven't had Romo for most of the season. The Cowboys are 4-11 because they have a play not to lose offensive system that's allowed only one win in 10 games with a couple of veteran QBs that have won multiple games with other teams. Brandon Weeden has only been with the Texans a few weeks and has already helped them to a couple of important wins that had playoff implications.

I wouldn't trust Garrett and his staff with a top 10 QB because none of the young QBs we've brought in over the years have develop under Wade Wilson. Why Wilson is still here is beyond me. Go watch tape of Stephen Magee from year one to when he was released 2 years later never he showed an ounce of improvement. Dustin Vaughn looked better during the summer of 2014 than he did this past summer. It's a MUST if the Cowboys stay in the top 10 they take a player who's going to be an immediate starter. Granted you have to look to the future with all draft picks but a top 10 pick on a 4-11 team has to be an immediate starter not a QB carrying a clipboard for 2+ seasons.

No one has said we're fine at QB with just Romo haven't read that anywhere. I certainly haven't said that. The team clearly needs a solid backup QB and that can be found later in the first round or in the second round. What pisses me off is how the team has ignored the position by bringing in undrafted developmental projects that are long shots instead of investing a second or third rounder on a QB who has a good chance of becoming a solid QB. Had they done that they may have ended up with an Andy Dalton or a Russell Wilson and no one would be talking about drafting a QB with a top 5-10 pick. It's an incredible crapshoot drafting a QB many thought the Rams made a big mistake by trading out of the #2 overall spot in 2012 and not taking RG3. Bradford was injury prone and wasn't very productive so many questioned the Rams move.

Had they taken RG3 they would have ended up with a worse QB than Sam Bradford who was a #1 overall pick. It's alarming to see how many first round QBs go bust especially in the top 10. I'm not saying Goff isn't going to be a solid NFL QB but the odds are 50-50 at best he does. There could be a QB taken in the 2nd or 3rd round that may end up better than all these QBs because that's the nature of the draft. The odds Goff becoming as good or productive as Romo is slim. I know how Jerry operates I've been watching him for over 25 years and he still has hopes Romo can lead the Cowboys to a championship. He hasn't given up trying to help him by adding players around him.

Even with Troy Aikman showing decline from back issues and concussions he hadn't given up on him by trading two #1's for Joey Galloway. In Jerry's mind he believes if Romo can stay healthy he can lead the Cowboys to a championship. He knows any QB he drafts it's going to take 2-3 years for them to become what Romo has become if they ever do. As long as Romo can stay healthy there's still a crack open in the window for this team to win it all if they can add a real impact player with their top 5-10 pick.

Who's to say any of these QBs will be good enough to replace him? He won't need to be replaced for at least another couple of seasons so we have time to develop a QB and we can do that later in the first round or in the second round. Let another team that doesn't have a Tony Romo move up for Goff and gamble their future on him. Several years ago many on the board I was posting on at the time wanted Brady Quinn and were PISSED that the Cowboys traded down. Many said Jerry would RUE THE DAY he passed on Brady Quinn who many thought would be the next Joe Montana. lol
