Was he ever even active this year?
No. But he’s essentially where Armstrong was 4 years ago. Drafted around the same place. Just my opinion, but they drafted him to be in a position to move on from Armstrong at a lesser cost.

Stephon Gilmore- he is a FA. Honestly at 34, he is probably mostly done. We have Diggs on a big deal and Bland. Time to move on.
Jourdan Lewis- He will be 29 next year. He had a pretty good year last year but is he worth getting a raise on a cap strapped team?
Noah Igbinoghene - guy we got in the KJoseph trade last fall. Played very little when it mattered. His rookie deal is up. So…bye.
Kind of leaves us thin at CB. I'd like to see Lewis stay.

Great list Bob!!!!!!!!!

There are multiple players on our roster, many who will be FAs next year who likely will not be on the roster next year either because of cap restrictions or just needing to move on. I’m intentionally leaving Dak off this list because that is a much more complex situation that requires a separate category. I’m not against moving on from Dak, but don’t want to discuss it here.

Some of these names will be obvious, some may not. Most of the guys I’m about to list will be FAs. Here are my predictions for players we will (should) be considered for an exit:
  • Tyler Biadaz- finished his rookie deal and will command a hefty raise. But IMO, he’s just ok. He’s a good starter but he’s not worth a big raise on a team full of cap challenges.
  • Michael Gallup- has never been the same since his knee injury 2 years ago. His contract is structured for an out this year. He gone.
  • Tony Pollard- after one year on the cap at $10 mil a season, he’s going into 2024 with no contract. He will not be worth the contract he will garner next year. He’s gone.
  • Leighton Vander Esch- LVE - His neck injury is a quality of life thing. He needs to retire.
  • Dorance Armstrong- he’s a good but not great player who benefits greatly being a part time pass rusher opposite Parsons. He will get offers for more than we should pay.
  • Stephon Gilmore- he is a FA. Honestly at 34, he is probably mostly done. We have Diggs on a big deal and Bland. Time to move on.
  • Tyron Smith- He is signed through 2024 I think. But honestly, even though he had an ok year in terms of not missing as many games as he had been missing before. That’s a low bar. He will be an old 34 next year. He’s not owed that much. I would move on. He’s no longer dependable. I love Tyron. He was truly a great player; a great player who‘s time is up.
  • Jourdan Lewis- He will be 29 next year. He had a pretty good year last year but is he worth getting a raise on a cap strapped team?
  • Jayron Kearse- Kearse has been good. Great? No. He’s probably going to get some higher offers that make it hard to keep him. I could see him following wherever Dan Quinn lands.
  • Dante Fowler- he’s a good pass rusher but is he worth keeping at the same price or more? No.
  • Neville Gallimore- finished his rookie deal and is just a rotational guy with only occasional flashes. JAG.
  • Noah Igbinoghene - guy we got in the KJoseph trade last fall. Played very little when it mattered. His rookie deal is up. So…bye.
  • Sean McKeon- Now the 4th or 5th TE who is mainly a blocker. We have a better TE room than 2 years ago.
There are a few other FAs that may be gone. Some of the guys above may also sign here again. Many of the replacements for the guys above would likely come from the draft or cheaper FAs. Will be a very interesting offseason to say the least.
Nice list and topic. I think one of Gilmore or Lewis will be back or a replacement CB who will cost about the same. You need 3 starters at CB and 4 good players. This would leave us with 2. If Gilmore will sign a reasonable one year deal it would be a huge coup for this team. He was fantastic add IMO and playing Diggs, Bland and Gilmore would be a nice place to start for this team. Plus, all of our other CBs kind of stink.

I'm a big fan of McKeon as a bottom of the roster blocker and STs guy. We likely run more next year and will need him or someone else in this role.

I like Kearse but he needs to go because you can't play both he and Wilson as often as we do and expect to not have coverage issues. If we didn't have Wilson I'd be fine with keeping him.

Tyron...I'm going to skip that one...

Pretty much agree with everything else

Based on the guys I think we need to let go and based on our obvious weaknesses, this off-season will require major talent upgrades at the following position groups:
  • LB (biggest defensive need)
  • OL (getting old and need a C or T)
  • DL (need some run stuffers)
  • RB (A huge need going into 2023 that was overlooked)
  • (Maybe) Safety
  • QB - I would draft a QB regardless of whether we keep Dak or not. Based on past history I can almost 100% guarantee you this front office won’t draft anyone until round 6 or 7.
you left out TE Jerry will get one in round 2  :muttley: j/k

Great thoughts...

- Centre or Tackle will be had in the 1st round I can almost PLAT GT that, the draft is OT heavy, and I mean very heavy.
- LB, our biggest need. Quality prospects start in the 2nd or 3rd. As this is our biggest need, go get Patrick Queen, David or another FA with experince.
- DL - we need proven players, FA.
- RB is fairly simple as this can be tackled via draft RD 3-5 and FA for fairly cheap. Lots of backs in FA this year.
- Juanyeh Thomas will play S next year, replacing Kearse which is "A" ok with me. We also have Bell.
- QB (think about it, we already spent our 4th this year on grooming someone to sit behind Dak)

Sidenote on QB. I saw Lance already has some endorsement deals with Dallas, so I think there will be a fair contract in play here when his 5th year option/extension is on the table.

We should probably talk about Dak....that's a topic we seem to ignore on here. Sometimes I even forget he's the QB

The problem replacing so many players and having so many needs is we don't have many picks next year. I'm pretty sure we don't haveca 4th, 5th or 6th from previous trades.

Good list. Though I'd modify it a bit:
If Gilmore, Lewis and Igbinoghene all leave, that's a lot of CBs gone. Don't know if Diggs will recover fully, what if he turns out like Gallup? Sure, Bland had a great year, but we've seen players have good years as rookies and then fall apart as teams study game film on them. He had the 5 pick-6s earlier in the year, but only 1 int in the last 6 games. I think Gilmore can stay, he's solid and at his age, can't see some other team giving him a big contract.
Armstrong had 7.5 sacks and is young and hasn't had injuries. While I think he'll get some pretty good offers, I'd keep him if at all possible.
Lastly, keep Tyron. Where else will you get a second team Pro Bowler? But if you keep him, you have to draft an OT high this year so he can learn for a year.

One thing's for sure, the Cowboys will look a lot different next year...

Pollard, Gilmore, Lewis, Fowler and Smith should be fairly cheap contracts. I could see some being retained.

Fowler was only 3 million this past season.

He was second team all pro this year
Tyron had a good year for sure. And don’t get me wrong, I love Tyron. He’s one of my favorite Cowboys ever. But raise your hand if you are confident that his body - with back and neck issues - will give him 12 or more games next year? I can’t raise my hand.

Tyler Smith showed in 2022 he’s capable of playing LT well. We could draft a monster G or C, possibly move TJ Bass to LG next year.

Again I love Tyron Smitj. But the first ability all great NFL players MUST have is availability. Odds of Tyron repeating whathe di this year are very low IMO. This organization is famous for waiting a year to long to make changes.
Kind of like the way Fowler plays
Fowler is a good pass rusher for sure. But he’s not that great against the run. This team needs a road grading run stuffer more than another pass rusher IMO.

Good list, but I think Smith is back and either Gillmore or Lewis is back.
Agreed. Alot of these guys (especially on defense) should be cheap and good enough to play some starter snaps so they stay for depth.

Tyron if he's willing to sign the same deal will be back (basically swing tackle base rate with incentives that still put him at less than a million a start). I think tackle will go early in the draft so Tyron, early draft pick, and Steele are your 3 tackles

RB they pursue in draft. LB and DT need to beef up big time so significant free agent and draft. Hankins is cheap so he probably does another one year deal
