RELEASED Cowboys release James Washington

He got a grand total of one target and almost got decapitated on the play. I still find it amusing how many fans were excited about his signing.

It's easy to raise hopes in the offseason when the fans are starved for content.

I still had/have a bad taste in my mouth following the 9ers loss. I remember checking in to the forum, and the rationalizing of the Washington signing was kind of funny to me.

The hype did not reach Matt Johnson levels, but it was still just odd.

Lol… that trade looked horrid to begin with. Now it has eclipsed the Joey Galloway and Roy Williams moves as an all time blunder.

Jerry and Stephen traded away an asset we needed, and utterly failed to replace that production because they let their emotions (once again) make their decisions
Or they got an equivalent player with TY Hilton for a much lower cost...

A lot of criticism of this, but obviously the Cowboys aren't planning to have an unused roster spot, so there has to be someone they plan to fill it with. Maybe someone coming off IR, or someone from the practice team to help on Special teams?
Who, I wonder?

I promise it is, with a big red "RELEASED" bubble next to it. Not my intention to be mean either, I've made the same mistake in the past, but I've seen the same post about 4 times already by different posters.

Yes, it gets posted multiple times because even a Breaking News thread still follow the ignore rules. If there were some way to put Breaking News in a special category, so that it displayed despite ignore preferences, Cowboyszone wouldn't have so many duplicate threads.

They have been chasing a WR replacement since they traded Coop. Once again— overvaluing their own roster and FA/draft strategy.

They believed they “had it covered”— until it was clear they didn’t. They tried to trade for WRs at the trade deadline but were unable to.

Imagine if they had just kept Coop? Lol. He was under contract already. He has had a great year considering the Brownies QB issues.

The FO made a bad mistake, and the WRs they counted on have not come close to being as effective and productive as Coop has been and would have been.

Hilton has made some impactful plays— and I am glad he is on the roster— but he has been sitting out there ALL YEAR. Let’s not act like the FO is genius with that signing either. If they knew he could still play— why try and trade premium draft capital for a WR at the deadline?

And the cloak and dagger treatment with Washington all year is a joke. What a waste of time, money, and a roster spot.

You get zero points for this bizarre response.

Yes, they screwed up WR this offseason. The fact they had to go shopping for Hilton (and danced with OBJ) here at the end of the season shows you they knew they had WR problems, that many non-homers, pointed out back in August.
How is it a screw up when they have Lamb, Gallup, Hilton, and Brown? You actually think that getting Hilton is a screw up and having Lamb replace Cooper is a screw up as they finish out a 13 and 4 season? I don't know about you, but I would rather have Hilton and his experience than have Cooper.

They did a great job of building a 13 and 4 team.

Cowboys FO discussion after San Fran game.

Pretend to be angry
Bring back all the coaches and pray penalties are corrected
Trade WR1 for peanuts
Replace with 2 players (who never see the field)
Ignore the fact we got beaten in the trenches AGAIN and sign someone who sells jerseys!
Start speaking about Washington "looking great" in camp
Ramp up marketing
Season starts.

He’s the third free agent WR we signed during the off-season in the past few years that we released during the season. In 2018 we signed Deonte Thompson, and some other WR and both were jags. We ended up cutting them both after we traded for Amari Cooper. James Washington was a mid tier free agent at best. I said the day we signed him I didn’t think he would do much. Most fans didn’t. He was a huge downgrade over the two receivers we moved on from. Surprised there were a few who thought he would make a big impact.

Same play every year

what was terrible about it? No risk, no high contract, potential upside, nothing there says "terrible" to me.

Now if you want to say that our succession plan from cooper was weak, i totally agree but have to hand it to the FO to put faith in Lamb to be the number 1 that he has become. I honestly think the issue was more with the number 2 (aka gallop being injured) and the number 3 than the number 1

Yes, the succession plan was awful, that's abetter way to put it. But a part of that plan was dependence on Washington being productive. He was never a reliable producer and counting on him to be a third receiver/second WR for the first few games while Gallup recovered was not a good plan. It was hopeful, but we need our GMs to make plans based on more than hope

May as well have kept Wilson to be honest.
