you do realize next yr will be the highest his contract will ever be in a given yr which will be 17mil, you know the yr dallas is has 60mil in cap room. Tyron will be 31 and 32 the last 2 yrs of his 10 yr deal. And has cap hits of 13.5 and 13.6mil on those yrs with no guaranteed money remaining.

wonder if people actually look at players contracts before talking bout them.
Was this directed at me? If so you completely missed the point. LOL

Also if you think that Smith will have no guaranteed money at the end of the deal...you completely miss the point of the deal structure. Irony.

it is lost on most that this is just Year 2 of his 8 year extension and he has already been used a cap ATM for several times

There will come a time when Smith has a huge cap number and people will be like "he's not worth his cap hit" ignoring the repeated small cap hits he's had over the years due to restructures.

It may seem far-fetched...but it's going to happen.

Yet even with this restructure, it will cost little in net cap funds. We could cut Tyron and have a tiny cap impact in 2018.

Keep singing that hit that was popular in the 90s kid.

What in the world are you talking about. I don't think you understand my point at all. LOL.

Boy that All-Pro center was wasted pick, lol.
I remember the media taking the Cowboys to the showers with the Frederick pick.
Travis Frederick - 3x Pro Bowl - 1x All Pro (4 seasons)
Andre Gurode - 5x Pro Bowl
Mark Stepnoski - 5x Pro Bowl (3 in Dallas)
Ray Donaldson
--- 6x Pro Bowl (2 in Dallas) blew out knee on Thanksgiving 1995 (yet still selected)
Dave Manders - 1x Pro Bowl
Tom Rafferty & John Fitzgerald - Never selected for the Pro Bowl (SB XII rings though)
--- Rafferty & Fitzgerald were never Shiver or Costa bad (they were really good)
Robert Shaw - Career cut short with bad knees

Regardless if Frederick is already thought of as the greatest center in Cowboys' history, Dallas fans have been truly blessed at the center position over their history.

Lots of available FA safeties out there this year..
Eric Berry 28
John Cyprien 27
Tony Jefferson 25
TJ McDonald 26
Micah Hyde 26
Mike Adams 36
Jahleel Addae 27
DJ Swearinger 26

That's just off the top, the pool is fairly deep here.

I do like all 4 of these players... Obviously with Berry at the top of it

Based on Spotrac's update of his restructure. It appears he could be cut the last two years of his deal for no cap hit.

Even his dead cap hits in 2020 and 2021 aren't even that bad....... $5.3MM and $1.8MM.

Just seems like smart business to keep doing this with Smith. Plus, given how OL seem to continue to play well into their 30s, this likely isn't going to be a contract that will crush you. I'd rather restructure guys like Smith and Frederick going forward than someone like Bryant.

Same here. Restructure the safe bets and guys who are earning all that they are getting paid. I wouldn't touch Bryant's contract, and so far, the Cowboys haven't. I hope it stays that way.

Will be interesting to see what they do with that. I think you could restructure Bryant one time this year and be done with it. His cap hit for 2018 and 2019 would be $20MM but you'd like to think he'd still be in his prime. But I might prefer to look elsewhere first for cap savings.

I don't understand caps like bknight but it seems you might be able to save $8MM or so this year on the cap if you convert his $13MM salary to a signing bonus. But as I said, then you are left with two big cap numbers the next two seasons.

Another quick question for the cap experts. Are there rules for determining how much salary you can covert to bonus? Smith was due $10MM in salary this year but converted only $8.725MM to a bonus. Frederick did the same, he only converted part of his base to a bonus.

I know there are league minimum salaries based on tenure, but I don't know if there are any other limitations when it comes to converting salary to bonus.

I remember that too. It was thought of as a wasted trade with the Niners who took Reid. Step and Donaldson were great centers and Rafferty and Fritz were not that bad either. Hopefully, Frederick can continue the tradition and I believe he might be the best of all of them.
