His contract ends after the 2017 season, and they aren't going to cut him before then, so it makes very little difference.

In fact, my guess is they're going to throw his contract out in 2017 and resign him to a deal that lets him retire a Cowboy and is generally team friendly.

Especially since his standing cap hit for 2017 was over 12 million.
Lower that cap hit !!

I'm going to just assume everyone saying Romo is getting cut is joking, but we can't, by league rules cut an injured player and once he is healthy, his salary will be guaranteed (may already be) because it will be past week 1

Leary and/or Escobar are valid pieces to a needy team if one exists.

Oh, without a doubt. Minnesota just gave up a first rounder for Sam fricking Bradford. But a fleecing like that requires that someone desperate come a knocking on our door.

Disrupting a game as he did, on top of his other problem, surely didn't enhance his chances of catching on with another team. I don't think he realizes how losing it on the sideline reinforced some thinking that he could act out in anger and frustration in other situations.

I think if the Cowboys were interested, he would already be on the team. If they waited until now after knowing what they did about the other DE's, that's wacky unless it was a money issue? Maybe Hardy figures some money is better than no money? If he doesn't play somewhere, he's just torched his own career. I predicted all along that he'd be back but it's not looking like it now.

i think hardys best chance is someone contending losing a top DE. maybe theyll sign him in panic mode

Are you talking about being on the roster Week1 because otherwise I don't see any new guarantees

Agreed.

Vested veterans' contracts typically don't become guaranteed each season until they are on the roster for the first game, unless a recently signed extension included guaranteed base salaries in early years of the contract.

The base salary guarantees in Romo's extension ('13, '14, '15) ended last year.

His 2016 base salary ($8.5M) is not guaranteed yet, but he's injured, so it doesn't matter. Teams can't dump injured players, they keep them on IR or reach injury settlements.

Why is Dallas not willing to restructure Dez Bryant?

Bryant's $9M base salary was fully guaranteed when he signed the extension prior to last season. It's unusual for the Cowboys to reach a big money extension and not do any restructures. Bryant's 2017 base salary ($13M) also became fully guaranteed earlier this off-season.

Dallas can create $6.4M in cap space with a Dez restructure.

So the answer is no, they could not survive. ;)
They could have done it before the cut to 53 and survived. His salary was not guaranteed at that point.

At this point they would just put him on IR which would not change his cap hit for this season.

They don't like for Dez to get too much up front. His contract structure made that obvious.

The contract extension that included a $20M signing bonus last year?

The only Cowboy who received a bigger up front signing bonus was Tony Romo, who pocketed $25M in 2013.

Tyron Smith and Brandon Carr each received $10M signing bonuses with their deals, Travis Frederick only got a $3.25M signing bonus the other day.

Room for a Wilcox extension?

They just threw 2M cap away on Sanchez, so nothing to see here.

There was a lot of deferred money in the contract. When they defer money with no cap advantage, the only thing that makes sense is that they don't want him to get it all at once.

Rumors were that they don't want him to be broke without a steady salary coming in.

Even though it would be his fault, they think he would try to hold out and demand more money if he did go broke. They're restructured in the past to give him more money because he was broke and in trouble for unpaid bills.
