The guy has never been used right. I've been saying that for as long as he's been on the team. I'm not saying he's an All-Pro but he's a good receiving Tight End. I know he's good in the red zone and from everything I've read and heard is that his blocking has gotten a little better. I'm sorry but Traylor's does not add more just because he's a blocker.
I felt the same until last season. He's such a tall target and has such soft, reliable hands. They took him thinking he had the potential to eventually excel in the Y, and he never quite developed enough as a blocker to earn the reps. When Dunbar went down, I thought he'd be the perfect weapon for Weeden in the seams since Weeden could only hit guys who were directly in the line of sight and Escobar had the height advantage over any S or LB trying to cover him. Between him and Beasley and Witten, I thought we had the offense to at least keep moving the chains doing what Weeden was actually able to do. Tough, though, without Dez in the lineup taking the coverage attention.
For whatever reason, Escobar never stepped up last season. I still don't understand why, but I think his ship has mostly sailed. We'll get what we can out of him this season, and probably don't extend him now that Hanna signed the long-term deal. Swam was insurance for Hanna leaving, but when Escobar blew his achilles, we shifted gears and extended Hanna instead. That makes Escobar expendable since Swaim is under contract and developing himself. There's a decent chance he goes someplace and contributes a significant number of receptions next year and everybody freaks out.
Really, though, that TE group is deep, which is good given how we rely on TEs in Dallas. It's a good problem to have. Maybe we get lucky and somebody who wants a receiving TE has a decent veteran S and they'll flip us a player we're more likely to use this season.
