Cowboys should cut Escobar

@Chuck 54 and @CATCH17, my commentary is more geared toward Dallas' premium picks outside of the 1st round not being good players for Dallas. Those picks should be solid starters...or at least you hope so. That's how good teams are built.

I think Escobar, like Fasano and Bennett before him, will be a starter in this League for several years. The staff has failed him as much as he has failed to be a better inline blocker. Wilcox seems to be more of the front office missing on the projection that a small school converted safety would be good.

The staff and that dude that wears 82. ;)

Hated the draft pick (not the person) from day one.

A SECOND ROUND PICK in one of the best 2nd rounds in many years.
I don't recall anyone in this forum wanting him in the 2nd.

Some of the Pro Bowl players taken soon after him.....
  • LeVeon Bell, RB
  • Jamie Collins, LB
  • Jon Hankins, DT
  • Tyrann Mathieu, CB/S
  • Eddie Lacy, RB
  • Travis Kelce, TE...lol
  • Keenan Allen, WR
  • Jordan Reed, TE...jeesh
  • Terron Armstead, OT

I mean, this whole forum loved at least a few of these players, yet we reached for Escobar,
If they'd taken in the 4th or later...maybe not the uproar.

But I do think if he's cut that for sure he'll get picked up by some team.
He has potential still.
Wish him luck.

What will be more sad is if you couple an Escobar release with the release of J.J. Wilcox as well. That will be the 2013 2nd and 3rd round picks not making it through their rookie contracts. Not good..

so keeping them to do nothing would make you feel better about that draft?

Eh....NO

I question the pick as well......but I'm not cutting to TE who has had the best performance so far this camp

If we cut all the player recommended by this forums, we'd have a hard time making 53.

No one said anything about cutting Witten.....who has had the best camp of any of our TE's.

Escobar gets some mentions about looking better than before the injury and suddenly he had a great camp performance? In the games, he has looked like the same plodder he has always been. No lateral movement, not much of a blocker. I don't really advocate getting rid of him, but he likely will have about as much effect on our season as Darius Jackson or Jameil Showers does.

don't get rid of him, this will be the year when we use him to create mismatches that will kill defenses!

Not what I said...your inference is that I am asteadfast supporter of these players. I state again, this would be an indictment on the front office and coaching staff. Get guys that fit your system and can produce within it. Or, adjust to the talent...morph the system to fit the players skills.

Swaim offers basically the same thing and I think it's unnecessary to carry 4 TE's.

Traylor has been great at blocking and Swaim hasn't really broke out but all indications are that he can do what Escobar does in the pass game.

So why hold on to Escobar? Because we foolishly invested a 2nd? Just move on.

What does it say to you that 31 other GMs would like you to do that? One of the dumbest ideas I have heard this year.

The guy has never been used right. I've been saying that for as long as he's been on the team. I'm not saying he's an All-Pro but he's a good receiving Tight End. I know he's good in the red zone and from everything I've read and heard is that his blocking has gotten a little better. I'm sorry but Traylor's does not add more just because he's a blocker.

Escobar has always been the recipient of negativity for his draft pick position. Wasn't his fault where he was picked or that he hasn't been used enough for the reason he was drafted. He was sold as a TE-WR hybrid in the RZ and how much of that have we've seen? On another team, if healthy, he would see a lot more action. He's on the wrong end, just as Bennett was, of the QB-TE connection that's been in place longer than any in league history. How would any of us like to play behind the best all around TE of all time?

I felt the same until last season. He's such a tall target and has such soft, reliable hands. They took him thinking he had the potential to eventually excel in the Y, and he never quite developed enough as a blocker to earn the reps. When Dunbar went down, I thought he'd be the perfect weapon for Weeden in the seams since Weeden could only hit guys who were directly in the line of sight and Escobar had the height advantage over any S or LB trying to cover him. Between him and Beasley and Witten, I thought we had the offense to at least keep moving the chains doing what Weeden was actually able to do. Tough, though, without Dez in the lineup taking the coverage attention.

For whatever reason, Escobar never stepped up last season. I still don't understand why, but I think his ship has mostly sailed. We'll get what we can out of him this season, and probably don't extend him now that Hanna signed the long-term deal. Swam was insurance for Hanna leaving, but when Escobar blew his achilles, we shifted gears and extended Hanna instead. That makes Escobar expendable since Swaim is under contract and developing himself. There's a decent chance he goes someplace and contributes a significant number of receptions next year and everybody freaks out.

Really, though, that TE group is deep, which is good given how we rely on TEs in Dallas. It's a good problem to have. Maybe we get lucky and somebody who wants a receiving TE has a decent veteran S and they'll flip us a player we're more likely to use this season.

Because escobar is a good player and his blocking improved in the summer.

Why cut a good young player you have under contract for two years at a cheap price? Because the internet thinks he stinks?

it makes no sense what your proposing and has less than zero percent chance of happening. He will be the starter opposite witten.

He still has 2 years left? Wow. This guy just wont leave.

Escobar isnt going to get cut...Romo and JG just dont utilize him, and when they have in the past the results have been pretty good. I wasn't happy with when we picked him either, but if Witten were to ever get hurt, he would be the next man up.
